Class of '66 Old Fart

IU Baseball vs Xavier - 3/17, 3/19 & 3/20/22

Recommended Posts

Final score 9-7 Xavier wins.

Perkins gave up a leadoff double in the 7th and was replaced by Reese Sharp.  A double scored Xavier's 3rd run followed by a single and then a 3-run HR made it 6-3 Xavier.   In the bottom of the 7th, a leadoff single and 2 walks loaded the bases with nobody out.  Whalen and Ellis each drove in a run and a passed ball scored our 3rd run of the inning to tie it up at 6-6 after 7 complete.

Sharp stayed on the mound for the 8th and gave up 2 singles to open the inning.   A ground out made it 7-6 and a wild pitch coupled with a throwing error on Ellis allowed another run to score.  Sharp walked the next batter and was pulled for Modugno who got us out of the inning.  Sharp faced 11 batters and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and walked 1.  We put a couple on base but couldn't do anything with them.  After 8, Xavier led 8-6.

Modugno stayed on the mound and gave up a solo HR in the 9th to make it 9-6.   We get a run in the bottom of the 9th and get a runner on 3rd with 2 outs but Colopy strikes out and that's the ball game.

Xavier scored 6 more in its 6th which included a 3-run HR and a run scoring triple off Moran who  lasted only .2 inning and was replaced by Jack Walker.  Moran faced 10 batters and gave up 7 hits and 1 BB.  In the bottom half of the 6th, we did pick up 4 hits and 5 runs aided by an Xavier WP and fielding error.  12-5 after 6 complete.

We picked up 3 runs in the 7th keyed by a 2-run Mathison double and it's 12-8.  Hoosiers trying to claw back.

Stahl took over pitching duties in the 8th after a leadoff BB by Walker and shut Xavier down.  We scratched out 2 more runs in our 8th on a 2-run HR by Ellis.  12-10 Xavier leads headed to the 9th.

Final score 12-10 as the Hoosiers go 3 up and 3 down in the 9th.  Can't keep digging deep holes like we have and expect to win.  Xavier's scored 21 runs off our pitchers in 2 games.

Great team can score. They still can't pitch and the pitchers who were good last year have gotten worse. Whether it is Glant or something else the team better figure out why this team suddenly can't pitch and everyone has gotten worse who is on the mound.

Hoosier bats stayed hot and we won the first game of today's doubleheader 13-3.  Brehmer started and went 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk.  Platt pitched the 8th and Hayden the 9th.  Whalen and Mathison each hit a 2-run HR of our 13 base hits.  Tibbitts and Jessee each with 2 RBIs in the game.

Second game is underway and Xavier already leads 2-0 in the top half of the 1st inning with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd..  Ryan Kraft started on the mound but has already given 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 BB and a WP.

Outside of Perkins and sometimes Brehmer this team can't pitch and we still don't have a good answer why the same pitchers from last year have gotten worse.
