Painter's refusal to recruit athletes will likely be their downfall yet again.

You kind of hit the nail on the head with the last paragraph. IU has definitely had bad timing when hiring coaches. There have been good coaches available that we could've had at certain times but we didn't have an opening. But you have to be willing to create the timing and thus far they've been unwilling to do so. Hopefully that changes going forward.

Odds/Thoughts on building top 25 preseason
Kentuckysucks replied to WayneFleekHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It's possible to put together a Sweet 16 type team for next season but imo we're gonna need $15-20M in NIL. If we only have $10M we're in trouble and could be looking for a new coach a year from now. Not expected to be a good portal class and competition will be fierce, especially for bigs. Tough road ahead I think. -
Agreed but it's a cut throat industry. You want a killer not a nice guy.
-
Agreed. Only real negative about the job is you're right next to Duke and are expected to keep pace with them. Beat them at least half the time. Could be difficult. Pitino is probably a top 5 coach in college basketball history and he seemed to have trouble keeping pace with Cal at UK despite having top 10 resources. Probably why he brought in the hookers.
-
Yeah very similar to Woodson. You knew right away that he got the job for one reason alone. But maybe just not quite as incompetent as Woodson so he might be able to hang on a bit longer.

Because the B1G plays tackle basketball not basketball. I really think DeVries was trying to assemble a team to do well in the tournament not the B1G. But you have to go through the B1G first to make the tournament. His big mistake.

Great fans. Horrible administration.

2026-27 Roster/Portal/how to fix the roster?
Kentuckysucks replied to Asha’man's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We need 3 bigs in the portal and 2 of them need to be really good. -
Ha. I remember this tweet.

Yeah lots of rumors of him tampering.

2026-27 Roster/Portal/how to fix the roster?
Kentuckysucks replied to Asha’man's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I think DeVries built this team more for the NCAA tournament where games typically turn into track meets and lack of size is less of an issue. But he forgot that you have to go through the Big Ten gauntlet to make the tournament first. -
DeVries grew up in Iowa watching the Hawkeyes and probably a lot of IU. If he didn't know what kind of roster he needed I just don't know what to say.
-
He thought he could get away with it because he brought in shooters.

Nail hits head. It's not the fact that we're losing it is why we are losing. Everyone knew this was poorly constructed roster at the time. We all knew you need size in the B1G to have a chance and called it out at the time. Everyone except Darian DeVries of course. It was a catastrophic mistake and one that will be very difficult for him to recover from. You could build an Indiana basketball roster through the portal 100 times and this shouldn't happen once. But DD thought you could play small ball in the B1G and win. He was dead wrong and he's the one getting paid $5M a year. Inexcusable.

No. I think he knows the game pretty well. His personality or lack thereof will likely be his downfall.
-
Pope, Kelsey, Dusty, likely McCollum, etc can all make the tournament year 1 but at Indiana it's always a 4 year rebuild. Maybe our administration consistently hiring crap coaches is the problem.
-
He needs to do more than just make the tournament. Needs to be a really good season. A bubble team with a first weekend exit almost certainly equals an inevitable firing after year 3. Not sure how he accomplishes much more than that unless he gets extremely lucky or Dolson can find him a lot more $.
-
Because they already had great gigs when we pursued them. The time to get Dusty was when he was at FAU. Same for Matta at Xavier or Brad at Butler. Or all the other schools wanting Cignetti. The time to strike was when he was at JMU not when he has IU on top of the world.

Disagree bigly. I'd say he's another Buzz Williams and we know how Maryland is doing.
