(2021) SG Tamar Bates to INDIANA
HoosierHoopster replied to ap2345's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Agree and with @cthomas-- sometimes the media guys lose track of the fact they're talking to college kids who play basketball - a couple hey congrats on being a dad type questions are cool, but come on media guys, stop the digging around into a player's personal life. -
Cody was so dominant, and agree he could've done even more. One of the best former IU players imo. At the same time, Vic was unstoppable as a junior, a monster defender who could dominate anyone, and Yogi was genuinely special all around. I can't rank those guys against each other, just can't, different positions, each became an incredible player at IU (and that's remembering how people used to bash Yogi for running into traffic and leaving his feet with nowhere to go as a frosh -- funny looking back at that now).

Amazing this has been going since 2019

So now the Celtics are apparently in the try-to-get Durant sweepstakes and are willing to deal Jaylen Brown. I'm not a C's fan or a Nets' fan (and not a Durant fan due to his jumping to the Warriors to get rings after getting knocked out by GS in that melt-down Thunder series). Durant's still one of the best in the game, no doubt, but he's starting to get long in the tooth and Brown plus other assets for him? Naah, don't like that from the C's, but just my take.

JG on expanding his game
HoosierHoopster replied to HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I get the push back we keep seeing on the idea of JG playing on the wing -- in addition to playing his typical forward role -- but I'm kind of wondering if people are watching the interview posted in the first clip. What's clear is that he is and has been working on being able to play both spots / roles all summer, as posted, he talks about what he's been working on to be able to bring that to the table. He also responded to a question about whether the idea to move to the 3 came from Woodson, and answered pretty directly that the idea came from him (JG) to grow his game and contribute more to the team - and not to move to the 3 but to allow him to play both as needed. The kid is a beast already, dominates boards and blocks, has been improving his shot and handle, and now he's a seasoned junior. I will be flat out shocked if he's not playing major minutes, and like you, I tend to think we'll see really intriguing lineups during games (irrespective of starts) that are not fixed by pigeon-holing players into the outmoded idea of 1,2,3,4,5. So many options now -- TJD, Race, JG, X, JHS / Race, JG, Ren, Bates, X / TJD, JG, Bates, JHS, X / TJD, Ren, Kopp, JHS, X / TJD, Race, Ren, Bates, X/ etc. -
JG on expanding his game
HoosierHoopster replied to HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I expect him to play a lot and 16-18 minutes is a lot. Like I said, if he plays 25, which is major starter minutes, great, that means he's genuinely exceptional already as a frosh. -

JG on expanding his game
HoosierHoopster replied to HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Good info, thx. I still wouldn't see him coming in at 25 mpg, but if he does then he's extremely good, and that would be a major plus. How well JG and Bates have continued to grow their games over the summer to me remains the key to the season. I see Ren as a serious contributor, but it's still Mont/HS to B1G, and as a frosh would expect more in the 16-18 mpg range -

Time will tell, but I do not see Ren, a frosh, as coming in and playing the same amount as Race, or so displacing JG, a junior. Ren's uber talented, he's got the college ready body, he's really good, but you guys are seriously discounting JG, imo. The dude kills the glass, he's easily the most athletic player on the team, he's a rebounding monster and a returning vet who just played very well in the NCAA tourney, and on a per 40 basis was 11+ boards, (16.6 on per 100 min) - best on team - and 2.2 blocks (3.3 per 100 min) - 2nd best on team, already raised his 3-point shooting to 31% likely improved over summer, and he's coming in honing his skills to play at both the 3 and 4. Ren came off the bench in his loaded Montverde team. He's excellent, but he's a frosh. -
From ITH -- https://www.insidethehall.com/2022/07/19/video-jordan-geromino-talks-expanding-his-game-his-position-for-next-season-and-more/ Expanding his game so he can play the 3 or the 4. Fighting over ball screens instead of defending ball screens. Defending in transition. Working on decision making - spacing, on ball when to shoot, pass, off ball setting actions, when to cut, making the right decision on the perimeter. Jump shot and handle are getting better. Asked if he's trying to play to play small forward, says more trying to expand his game so he can play the 3 and the 4 (good), produce more for the team. Idea of playing the 3 came from him, to expand his game. About his decision to come back -- "bigger than myself" -- talks about how he trusts Woodson and how strong he sees the program and fighting for a championship (nice). _Still a young kid, so much potential.) Asked about players breaking out, but not really being talked about, says likes K Banks a lot, he has game.

Yeah that was a heck of s squad - and a real measuring stick. To me OG is the difference. As good as Yogi was JHS may measure up, but I don’t see anyone stacking up to OG - big shoes to fill for JG. But JHS, TJD, Bates, Ren, JG, Race, and X, with Galloway et al? Just maybe - heck of a looking squad too

Dakich is a tool. That is all

Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff
HoosierHoopster replied to Hoosierfan1901's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It is curious but it doesn’t really surprise me. Archie is not and never was a bad guy, it’s just that that program and IU are very different animals and for whatever reason he was a fish out of water here. The whole pack line thing - failure here. The demeanor - just not a fit for IU. Then the Covid year that robbed him of a tourney showing. His approach and style just didn’t fit at IU. I wish him well -

Here you go again, Academic Olympics, lol -- dismissive! So ok we're just going to disagree here, all good, I don't think there's a need for yet another football school, a mediocre university and mediocre bball program etc., but we've pretty much beaten this horse to death -- peace out -
Was kind of wondering…

In all seriousness you could make similar statements about IU. Clemson aint Stanford, lipstick on a pig …. -
Yeah and TX is of course a football state, but UT is bigger than TT basketball, though it hasn't been great lately
-
I’m in TX, have been to games, that’s unusual
-
And TT over UT in Texas? Naahh

Yes i think re our discussion it’s largely personal preference— Clemson’s current Torv rating doesn’t change the history of an at best mediocre bball program, i mean that’s clear. My comment on your being dismissive (in fun) is you’re talking water polo. I am in the camp that at least 1 if not 2 WC schools is probably likely and makes absolute sense, USC and UCLA are isolated coming in. We have schools out East in MD PSU, maybe USC UCLA stay isolated but that’s a big geographic difference and the PAC is likely getting pulled apart. I’ve said Oregon and Washington make sense too, or maybe Cal, all good schools, all bring a lot to the table. -

HoosierHoopster replied to Southside's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We have 7, 3 of which are below 45, the ACC has I believe 7 in the top 40, the B1G is not the best of the P5 academically (a football conf block anyway). However with USC and UCLA joining that will add 2 top 25 academic schools (the PAC 12 has the most top 25 academic ranked schools), so that certainly makes the B1G better academically. But man you’re being so over the top dismissive lol, water polo seriously? Clemson sucks at bball, among other sports. Yes, yawn, unless again we’re all about football, but again the B1G is already pretty much loaded for bear in football. The Bay area is an excellent tv market, there’s money there. No idea how this ends up working out, if it’s purely football then it will be a football school — but no i don’t think it’s unrealistic to be looking at other factors than how strong a school’s football program / football money is -

I think statements like we don’t need help academically are opinions not fact. The flip side of that is we’re plenty fine right now on money- football, OSU, UM, etc, and academically we have 1 elite school in NWU, with good academic schools below it but Stanford is top tier and while discounting it based on football fan support you’re just ignoring its depth across multiple sports including its strong sport history. Stanford is a special school, Clemson? Major yawn.
