How does fans not universally loving the coach after year 1 meaningfully harm the program?

Fans ultimately just aren't that impactful when it comes to winning and losing. No fans are happy with a losing teams. We've only made the tournament a third of the time over the past 18 years. That's not because of the fans. I don't get why people over inflate the importance of sentiment on message boards and twitter lol. Maybe it's a stress reaction from everyone not singing hakuna matata and holding hands. People will have conflicting opinions on everything and that's OK.* * = assuming no lines are crossed (i.e. harassing players), which does occasionally happen in large, passionate fanbases; the fans are still a net positive for the program

I'm not debating the Tom Crean diehards today. You guys can have at it about our coach from 10 years ago and how that somehow relates to the program today.

Brother, you're saying we should've kept Tom Crean. How is it cherrypicking data to ask what his record was during the period of time you'd have liked us to retain him? Lol

I agree we're not going to be preseason ranked barring a shocking portal success (not happening IMO) It's going to be another interesting portal season. We didn't build momentum in Y1, but I think it's reasonable to expect a better haul since we're now fully staffed and they've had an entire season to be ironing out a plan. Not only that, but... the money we spent on Tucker, Bailey, and Conerway should go a lot further. Let's assume Rabby is right and we return Sisley, Dorn, Andrej + 3 freshmen. That's 7 spots to fill. Flipping the roster to that degree seems like the right idea.

He will have an excellent pro career in the Albanian Super League or Spain's Fourth Division lol

Dante Allen on Miami seems like a pretty good freshman. I remember a lot of us wishing he'd come here to play with Trent when he decommitted from Nova last year. Jai Lucas seems like a very promising young coach IMO

This latest round of deflection has centered the conversation on Tom Crean, who is ancient history at this point. We have 9 years of data since then from 3 different coaches and the problem has persisted. It's not fans. It's coaching. A program that spends like IU - to say nothing of the Indiana basketball brand - has not been getting what they've paid for over the last two decades. In a given decade, at a minimum, a program that spends like us should make the tournament more often than not. A couple times you should go to the second weekend. That's the bare minimum and none of the last four coaches were able to do that. It's been 18 freaking years of worse than mediocre results. The fanbase didn't do that. It seems kind of crazy to make that case?

Good coach. This is devastating news for Syracuse fans. Their world view is basically shattered after being clearly rebuffed for Providence of all places.

Gosh the IU fanbase is so rabid and demanding in 2026, if you just act like Tom Crean's stretch from 2008-2011 never happened, the problem will be clear as day.

Meh disagree. If that was their NIL budget this year, they can still be a final four threat as long as Few is their coach. They're definitely more of a final four threat than Indiana, even in this era with our financial advantages, as long as Few is there IMO.
