General Coach Candidate News
MikeRoberts replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It makes me sad that we are back here again. I think the thing that is apparent now but that I have been saying for a long time is that his team embodies his personality - stoic, emotionless, quiet, sleepy, boring. I don’t dislike Archie nor do I dislike the players, but they don’t have “IT”. There is no moxie on the court nor on the bench. There is a such thing as a silent assassin but we don’t have those either. on top of just losing a ton of games over the last 4 years, they have just been boring as all can be in all facets and non of that breads excitement and enthusiasm for the now or future. I love IU and if I’m a top recruit I don’t know that I want to go there right now as it looks like nobody is having fun -

Forecasting B1G Finish Post-Noncon
MikeRoberts replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I see us finishing 12th, going 6-14 if that ends up being true this is going to be a tough season to follow -
Thanks, I like the fact that he CAN play around the rim like TJD but we 100% need to change this recruitment strategy. We can afford to have 1 guy on the court that won’t shoot/can’t shoot but when you have 2 or 3 there is no movement, no deception, no chance for anyone that can actually shoot to succeed. so, not only do we need a transfer at the 5 that can shoot but also a transfer at the 4 that can shoot to pair up with Race and Duncomb that cant
-
As someone mentioned, we get some open looks but there is an important caveat: the wrong people are usually the ones wide open. Last year it was Smith and this year it is Race. When they get the ball on the perimeter they are no threat what so ever and it allows the 5 defenders to guard the other 4 offensive players, it’s useless. It also goes back to what people have complained about since Archie got here in having multiple players on the court at the same time that can’t and won’t shoot. Playing Race and TJD together is horrible but our only option. Those two can’t and won’t shoot so there is no reason to follow them more than 10 feet from the basket. That allows the defense to stay home and never get out of their comfort zone last year it was Brunk and TJD. Can Duncomb break that trend?

The most promising thing I’ve seen as of late is the progression of Franklin and Galloway. That’s a freshman and sophomore that could be a starting tandem for the next few years. while Galloway is a very good distributor and Franklin can handle the ball, we really need to see Lander come along so we have 3 guards that we can count on. the optimism ends there as I look at our front court, if TJD leaves I have no idea what the plan is. Race is not ready to play the 5 game in and game out and we cannot plan on a freshmen being ready either. We need an impact transfer in a bad way

You keep perpetuating something that doesn’t exist. there is a reality, that Other teams and coaches are maturing at a faster rate than IU and there is a football school and a nothing school that replaced their coaches at the same time we did and they are both in a better place than us. Those are the facts. Your hypotheticals and absolutes about what we would do “if” isn’t even an argument. and nobody has stated they are enamored but Underwood, he is just a very relevant and fair comparison, that’s it
-
Of course it is. Even removing our 5 championships, we’re the state school, facilities are not top notch but better than most, pays coaches top 15 in the country, unlimited recruiting budget, in the best conference in America, on TV all the time and top 5 fanbase in terms of size in the country. it has everything one needs to succeed
-
Argument for argument sake it appears. There is a clear pattern of growth at Illinois, It is apparent in all phases. Talk to Illinois fans, they’re excited for this season and what’s ahead. I live in Illinois and there is optimism that hasn’t been there for a long time. That optimism started in Underwoods third year and has carried over to his fourth. that program started in a worse place and is in a better place than IU in the same time period. We aren’t improving like other teams in the bigten
-
He already has. There is no excitement, not in recruiting, not on the bench, not on the court, not in the fanbase. Crean in year 4 went 27-9 and a sweet 16 and knocked off a slew of ranked teams and the future looked bright. Compare that to what we have now and it’s just sad meanwhile Brad underwood has brought back excitement to Illinois in his 4th year and we’re drowning

Right, and I don’t necessarily mean “bad apple/s” I mean kids that lack that competitive drive, that take every possession and every loss personally and hate hate hate to lose. I don’t think we have many of those guys. we get down big to a team and time and time again they fold their tents up and quit. So so many blowout loses since Archie has been here. It started that way on his first game and has never stopped
-
That’s the writing on the wall to me as well. The fact that we’ve seen little to no player development, pieces that don’t work together, glaring, on-going issues, ie. 4 years of no shooters and most importantly no “Will to win”. not only do we not see the wins racking up but they continue to quit/get the absolute crap kicked out of them with no rebuttal time and time again. No fire, no hate to lose attitude... that’s a culture problem

IUBB vs Texas - 12/1/20 @ 1:30 on ESPN
MikeRoberts replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
22 games under Archie have been 10+ point blowout losses and many of those were never a game from jump and a bunch of those were 20+ losses. not sure if you were defending or trying to correct me but 22, that’s a ton no matter how you slice it -

That was me. I did a look at 3 years under Archie the point spread of our losses and it was staggering. I don’t have those stats handy but it was something like our losses were by an avg of 10 points and 1/3 of all of our games played were losses by 10 or more points and a staggering number by 20+ points -

When we lose, we REALLY lose under Archie -

I will keep saying this. We need a new strength and conditioning coach. He gets a lot of praise from Archie and Archie plays him up in recruiting and talking heads like to show body transformations but the facts are: nobody can shoot free throws. Nobody can make 3s. Nobody can finish around the rim. Everyone looks gassed. these are not 1 game facts, they are 3+ years under Archie. This includes players that could shoot in high school, AAU, on other college teams and they get here and their shot is destroyed. The way you lift, the way you train should be to help muscle memory, just like practicing your shot. Why do most players become worse shooters, finishers when they get here? -
(2021) - PF Mason Miller to Creighton
MikeRoberts replied to ap2345's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
I’m not optimistic but if there was a reason to be, it would be how quickly this decision came after Kaufman committed to PU. I think they would compete for minutes at the 3/4 and Miller might have gotten the short end of those minutes. Now there is nothing in his way of getting serious minutes early -

How does one go to West Lafayette and ever want to return? It’s such a gloomy, ugly place. respect but cannot relate -

What was his comment a while ago? Something like “my decision might not be a popular one” or something? the popular pick in his family and community would be Iu -

No I understand that. It seems plausible it was real and got leaked. BUT, if you are a “Snow” or someone that previously put in a crystal ball to IU, they need to be 100% certain if they are going to flip this late in the game and I don’t know that they have enough to say that
