Odds/Thoughts on building top 25 preseason
WayneFleekHoosier replied to WayneFleekHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Was based on a bad scout on Rice/K9. That team wasn’t far off. If Rice would have been Washington State Rice and Galloway learned how to shoot, and Woody played 2 bigs with our 3 big rotation it would have been. Give DeVries a roster like that and let’s see what he’s made of. -

Not good. With top level spending, we gotta get in there. Pay for a top 10 or 15 PG. Pay for a top 10 or 15 C. Pay for another guard or wing on that level. Moneyball the rest. I feel like that should produce a top 25 team. mid major roster building isn’t likely to do it. -

Odds/Thoughts on building top 25 preseason

Sadly agree. I think our odds are little higher if we make 2-3 splashes. Going into another season with no Mojo will be rough from a fan support perspective. We saw a drop this year. That will continue. I don’t think Indiana is totally immune. -
Odds/Thoughts on building top 25 preseason

In a world where big dogs eat first, we are going to need to find a way to separate ourselves or financially act like a big dog until we can build some program momentum. Coaching is an important factor but ALL the best coaches say you are only as good as your players and will do whatever it takes to get the best ones. Getting them to play for each other, like each other, do winning basketball things, motivate them or find the ones where winning is most important. That’s where coaches has its biggest impact. I don’t see how we pluck enough from a busy Portal to make a statement, without like you said, spending huge. -
This was on ongoing debate I had and wanted from last season. Lots of it is trusting programs and trusting coaches. Indiana and DeVries rightfully will get none of that. I know it’s not important to most, and it’s how you finish. While I’ll agree, it sets a ceiling based on Analytics, metrics, and thoughts. If we want to make a statement make a statement. We didn’t make a statement last preseason or end of season. We did get ranked for 1 or 2 weeks early. To me it’s important. It’s important for morale, recruiting, swagger, momentum, etc and etc. it’s also important because it says we have a great roster on paper. And last year, we never did. It was pretty clear a lot of things needed to go our way. We built a bubble team and performed like one. Go freaking figure. Odds this season? Woof. We have a top 20 freshman class with no one that projects to be real impact makers. We return 2 or 3 guys who don’t project to be difference makers. We likely need 5-6 playable guys and 2-3 stars. my odds of preseason 25 with a top 20 Nil? 20 percent.

Transfer Portal w/IU Interest
WayneFleekHoosier replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I’ll need to wait to see full picture and it’s super duper early, but if this is a guy you project to start you are lowering your ceiling immediately. Positves-6’3-6’4. 41% on 5.5 attempts. Negatives-on a scale of 10 he’s a 3 or 4 on athleticism. That has impact on both sides of the court. 77% from charity which for an atheletic plus size guy you take that everyday. But from a guy who is your shooter you want that number higher. Played for a very mediocre Colgate in a very mediocre conference. Athleticism on defense will impact him. 1 year of eligibility. again, full team build vision is necessary and I like shooters, but you are giving up a fair amount. Hearing we will lose all but 2 or 3 guys. So portal could be huge at 7 or 8. Id take him over Cupps, I guess in a Cupps like role. -
Another perfect example. And it’ll be the right move. Even if they goof up the hire. He’s not a great coach, and at a UNC with their resources they should have a great coach. Easy choice. Definitely their version of Woodson. But Davis’ intermittent success makes it slightly harder.
-
Yep, top 5 job hands down. I’ve heard some Oats talk but I also think Oats to UNC is like Beard to Indiana. Don’t think the boosters will get behind the off court stuff. Very curious who this turns out. Davis is subpar though. He does decent with a lot of talent but clearly doesnt push it ahead.

Outside of UK/Santa Clara, underwhelming boring games today.

Crean was the best of the last 3. Maybe better than DeVries too, we’ll see. DeVries has advantages Crean didn’t have. If Creans lows were not so low and recruiting momentum could have been maintained his tenure would have been longer. He also suffered through a terrible AD and became paranoid. I respect and love the guy really. Whitten and Dolson have positioned Indiana in a better spot. Crean would have befitted from a “team”
-
He’s just using the Crean Tenure to try to crap on the fanbase. It’s his MO. He doesn’t want to look at the full Crean picture or where things ended with Crean or what happened with Crean after he left which is all meaningful context. Or discuss Archie or Woodson because there isn’t much there. Just trying to find the best angle to justify blaming fans.
-
Wow. That UK game ending. I was at a full day CE and had to capture that secretly on my phone. Haha. My assistant and I almost cheered the 3 by Santa Clara aloud. Then the return 3. All while trying to remain silence. lol. That close to a UK and Duke first round exit. What could have been.

Anyone connected to a failing program plays the blame game externally. Internalizing the blame and admitting as a group “you” aren’t good enough is hard and painful to swallow. Love and Hate are ying and yang. I don’t blame any one group. It’s been the administration for years. It’s starts there. Coaches have had difficult jobs, especially before NIL when Indiana wouldn’t cheat on the level that the blue bloods and others would. The players in many cases get the brunt of the failing above them. But it’s a group effort. It’s top down. I think generally the players start off trying their best. I’m certain many players turnout to dislike the online fanbase. I don’t blame them. But the online fanbase is just one small factor. Winning turns that immediately. Or listen to Painters speech about it when the online fanbase turned on this years team. That’s how you handle that. You be a man, you are intelligent, and you tell the team and players what is what. Searching out small corners of the fanbase online to tell you what the results of losing all the time already tells you is a sign of an insecure team and coach. We need a coach that basks in reality and can keep a team together and on the right page. Winning does that automatically. Losing, as always makes it harder. Truth is the truth.
-
This relentless attack that the fanbase is the problem is so delusional. And that Indiana despite its history, resources, NIL, and everything else being top 10 or top 20 at worst is just an average high major job and its expectations are out of line with reality and that the fanbase deserves “what it gets” is the most maddening narrative existing to me.

He’s not good. Hes very Woodson-esque. UNC is still the sleeping giant that Indiana has been but at a higher level. Very similar situation for UNC as Indiana. They always get talent though. And usually it’s enough to stay somewhat afloat through mediocre coaching.
-
Basketball has fallen way off. Nationally there are zero expectations at Indiana because we suck. Locally there is moderate pressure because we want to be good enough to be in the tournament again. And then build from there. But the Bar is set really low. DeVries didn’t get treated too bad this season at all. Locally or nationally. It was a meh season, and a meh reaction. Slight heat on the late season slide but at a real Blueblood with real expectations the fire would be burning up a coach’s @$$ with our results. Im not off the DeVries bus at all. But depending on how this portal goes and next season, I will have seen enough to make a decision. His personality is bland but kinda likeable in the Everyman sense. If he starts winning, I’ll love him. He seems from the outside looking in, a bit overwhelmed. Indiana fans are ready to rally behind a winner so hard. Produce a winner and the fans will be the wind beneath the wings. In general we were pretty tame considering how this year went. However he did little to help himself moving forward, and he’s lost me on his ability to scout the level of talent necessary to win. That’s what’s most concerning to me.
-
That’s always the excuse. It’s a good way to get a bad coach an extended stay too. Cig didn’t excel because of lack of pressure. That’s insane. Cig excelled because he’s confident, cocky, and capable. He had a plan and he executed it and it worked. He said, outright he was going to win. He brought pressure onto himself that he didn’t need to do nationally. (Sure he over performed likely his own expectations, but he never cowers) DeVries is not Cig in any form or fashion. Hiring someone with a similar confidence and a proven system would be a start. We HAVE never done this.
-
Not if they are listening to me. And a lot of fans I talk to. Want more athleticism. More Size. It is clearly the stereotype though.

So the rumors are true? Not the best optics for DeVries, but if he builds a winner for next year it’ll be overlooked. -
Shot making at its finest. Low percentage shot one after another that guys were repeatedly making. Beautiful Disaster. (Shouts to 311)
-
Glad you can do that. As it stands right now, the only thing I’m optimistic about is Dolson and DeVries NOW know they need to win. Why it took them a year is excuse making in its finest. Besides the pressure to win and build a better roster and execute better, there is very little I’m optomistic about. The returning players, if we have any, are just whatever. The recruits seem like solid long term pieces if they can build at a place like Indiana without getting impatient. Hard to really expect much from any of them year 1. We went after year 1 impact makers but didn’t land any. Moody’s film might translate early but he’s not a Jordan Smith. Or a Deron Rippey where he’s on another level with athleticism. Portal targets and landings will tell us everything we need to know.

Needed that one bad. Hopefully they can go on a run

Really curious how this goes. 3 returnees plus 3 freshman would be about right to balance some things out. But things were off the second half of the season, vibes/chemistry wise. Also curious if a coaching change happens in a spot or not. I’ll always say how you mange 1-10 and 11-13 is key. Only gonna have 8-10 guys maximum happy with their role. Figuring out how to balance expectations, chemistry, etc goes a long ways. Makes it more important not to miss on your GO TO targets that are being paid the most. Purdue seems to handle this better than any school I can think of. But winning is hugely helpful in the Vibes category and waiting for your spot to open up.
