Indiana Players Now In The Portal
NashvilleHoosier replied to Chris007's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I’m gonna give Bates a ton of grace. He’s not from Indiana and now has a higher priority and responsibility in his life than both basketball and school. He’s also got the opportunity to provide for his daughter through basketball like he’s never had before. I’d guess the conversation was far less him thinking he should be making TJD money and far more that, if he was going to stay, he had to make more so he could either have his family live closer to help, pay for them to travel more often, etc. He might take less NIL money to go closer to family. I don’t blame him one bit for asking. And I don’t blame the staff one bit for telling him it won’t happen here. -
Dusty May - FAU HC - Former IU student manager

This is exactly it for me. Lots of positives to look to at this point but if we were trying to hire a coach this off-season I’d be iffy. We either get to see if he sustains success at a mid major (making a jump up to a tougher conference), or if he succeeds at the power 5 level. When Woody decides to retire, we should have a pretty clear picture. Now, what’s sure to happen is Cal retires in 3 years, UK throws more money at him than we could ever imagine and then Woody retires the next year. -

I’m that guy who digs this up but doesn’t remember that he wasn’t entirely sold himself but is still here to try a weird flex of some sort. -

Not disputing Anderson. And kudos if you called Lander not being worthy of an offer before it happened. I'm sure that wasn't an easy drum to beat around here :-). But the point I believe USPS was making is that if the IU staff whiffed by offering Lander, so did 14 other high majors. So, awful evaluations were aplenty on this one. -

Big fan of not only doing something, but doing it well. :-) -

Hindsight is a powerful thing. Imagine the absolute meltdown of this board and the entire fanbase had we not even offered a 5-star in-state PG. Yikes. -
Maybe not but it’s still quite a different recruiting scenario when you’re talking about being at worst the #2 PG as a freshman vs. being at best the #2 PG as a (likely) upperclassman.

Did he know he’d be back? Honest question. X was a senior when JHS committed, only had the extra year available. Only other PG on the roster was Phin which JHS would have never been worried about, and obviously moved on anyway. Quite different that a portal PG looking at a likely sure fire starter in X and another incoming PG.

Uhhh…I mean I know what you’re trying to say. But in order for this to be an equivalent comparison, Duncomb would have to be spending most of his time coming off the bench and being a very key contributor for like the Chicago Bulls while not seeing any playing time for IU. Not even close to a reasonable comparison. -

I hate to look too far into the future. Too much can happen in 5 years to worry about it. But if you think back to our last 2 coaching searches, some of the big factors discussed were going for a younger, hot name, up and coming coach or going for a coach with previous connections to Indiana (either the state or the program). It's entirely possible, but not given, that when Woody chooses to retire, we'll have several candidates that are both younger, hot name, up and coming coaches who ALSO have a previous connection to Indiana (program or state). -
Fairleigh sure I’m gonna hold any hearty laughter until about 2am to see if it’s worth it.
