Ford Comes Up Big in Opening Weekend Senior Brittany Ford hit .625 over four games for the Hoosiers in their opening weekend of play. In eight at bats she tallied two home runs, two runs, five hits, three extra-base hits, seven RBI, 12 total bases and a 1.500 slugging percentage. In the Hoosiers first game of the season, against Louisville she came off the bench to pinch hit and hit a home run in her only at bat. In game two she got the start and hit a grand slam to help the Hoosiers to an 11-1 win over Florida Atlantic. It is the second straight season she has hit a grand slam. Ford had at least one hit in all four of the Indiana games this past weekend. Ford collected RBI in three of the four games and had multiple RBI in two of the games. Johnson Shines in Florida Freshman Heather Johnson made her first career start on Feb. 26 against No. 3 Florida State. Johnson retired 15 of the 20 batters she faced and had 4 strikeouts. Heather Johnson started but only lasted 2 innings giving up 3 runs in facing 11 batters. Brianna Copeland took the mound and finished the game giving up 1run on 3 hits and struck out 6. We had 12 hits which included a Brittany Ford 2-run HR. Grayson Radcliffe and Ford each had 3 RBI and Cora Bassett scored 4 times. Game against Western Illinois will get underway shortly. Quote

Heather Johnson pitched the final inning. Hoosiers only had 3 hits of their own but 2 of them were HRs off the bat of Cora Bassett and accounted for all of our runs. Montgomery pitched 4 innings allowing just a single hit and didn't walk a batter. Kate Rehberg pitched the 5th and did give up 2 hits but no damage done. Brianna Copeland playing 1b in the Valpo game had 3 rbi including a solo HR. Desiree Dufek also with 3 rbi. Women are now 8-4 on the season. Next weekend they'll be in Louisville for 5 games. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted March 8, 2022 Posted March 8, 2022 Copeland Earns Big Ten Softball Freshman of the Week Honors Indiana softball pitcher/infielder Brianna Copeland has earned co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday. Copeland Went 2-0 in the circle for Indiana on the weekend in the Hoosier Classic with an era of 0.82 in 11 innings pitched. Copeland made the start against Western Illinois and pitched six innings giving up one run and striking out five batters in a 3-1 victory. Copeland came on in relief and pitched five innings giving up one run and striking out six batters in 9-4 win over Valparaiso on March 4. Copeland Went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI and hit her first career home run in the Hoosiers 9-0 victory over Valparaiso on March 5. This is the first career Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor for Copeland. Quote

And she singles to right field to drive in the winning run! Radcliffe and Ford each with 2 RBIs; Bassett 3-4 on the day. Montgomery went 5.1 innings giving up 4 hits and 3 runs. Copeland relieved and couldn't get a batter out and CMU scored 2 more and led 5-4 after 6 complete. Johnson pitched 1.2 innings allowing 3 hits but no runs. Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the 7th, Bassett drove in Meeks to tie it up and then it was Radcliffe's time to shine. Scheduled to play Ohio U. at 12:30. It was a 7-1 game after 6 complete and we let OU score 4 in the top of the 7th off Montgomery who took over the mound in the 6th. Johnson had pitched 5 innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits and walked 1. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 We won our first game of the day 7-6 over Eastern KY. Benson had 3 RBIs and Bassett 2; Stone a solo HR. Montgomery, Copeland and Johnson had mound duty. Collectively they gave up 9 hits and 4 BB. Copeland (4-1) gets the win. In the second game, Louisville used our pitchers for batting practice and banged out 18 hits and scored 16 runs. Johnson started but gave up 9 hits in just 3 innings. Louisville scored 7 in the 5th which included a 2-run HR and a grand slam. And to add insult to injury they hit another grand slam in the 6th. Next weekend we'll play 5 games in Oklahoma City. Cora Bassett with 2 solo HRs and Brooke Benson with a 2-run HR and 3 RBIs for the game. Heather Johnson started on the mound and went 4.1 innings allowing 5 runs on 7 hits and 3 BB. Macy Montgomery took over and did not allow a hit but did walk 5 and put runners on 1st and 2nd in the top of the 7th but ended the inning and the game with a strikeout. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 Oklahoma proved it's the #1 team in the country with a 15-1 rout of our Hoosiers (13-6). We managed just 3 hits, one of them a solo HR by Stone in the 5th for our lone run. Johnson, Copeland and Montgomery allowed a combined 7 OK hits (2 HR for 3 RBI) but OK's hits were timely and aided by 10 BB by our pitchers and 2 fielding errors. OK scored 6 in the 1st and 7 in the 4th and the mercy rule ended the game after our bat in the 5th. Doubleheader today. 2:30 vs Sam Houston State and 5:00 vs Iowa. Quote

An RBI double by Copeland and a solo HR by Radcliffe accounted for 2 of the 5 Hoosier hits but that's all it took. Montgomery pitched 6.1 innings giving up 2 hits and 3 BB. In our second game, we beat Iowa 8-4 scoring 6 runs in the top of the 7th. Benson and Ford each with 3 RBIs; Copeland with 2 which accounts for all of our scoring. We had 12 hits in the game. Hackenbracht is hitting .369 on the season with 24 hits and eight home runs. In the circle Lexie Handley has gotten the majority of the work with 80 innings pitched and a 1.74 era. Last Time Out The Hoosiers went 4-1 at the Hall of Fame Classic in Oklahoma City, Okla., March 18-20. Brooke Benson led the Hoosiers offensively hitting .500 with seven hits, two home runs and eight RBI. Tatum Hayes went a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases for Indiana. Heather Johnson and Macy Montgomery each went 2-0 in the circle for Indiana. Johnson pitched 19 innings over the court of the weekend and struck out 13 batters. Stanton Earns 700th Career Victory With the Hoosiers 2-0 victory over Sam Houston State on March 19 IU head coach Shonda Stanton earned her 700th career victory. Stanton is in her 24th year as a head coach. Before arriving in Bloomington, she coached at Marshall for 18 seasons and is the winningest coach in Marshall history with 560 wins. Copeland Freshman of the Week Indiana pitcher/infielder Brianna Copeland was named Co- Freshman of the Week by the Big Ten on March 8. A look at her numbers at the Hoosier Classic March 4-5. Copeland went 2-0 in the circle with an era of 0.82 and 11 strikeouts. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with her first career home run and three RBI. Big Weekend for Bassett Junior infielder Cora Bassett had a strong weekend March 4-5 against Western Illinois and Valpo. Bassett hit .750 on the weekend going 9-for-12 at the plate with a 1.417 slugging percentage and six RBI. Bassett hit two home runs and stole three bases. Attacking the Next 60 Feet The Hoosiers currently lead all NCAA DI softball teams in stolen bases at 2.73 per game. Tatum Hayes ranks first in the Big Ten in stolen bases with 17 and 15th in the NCAA. The Hoosiers have stolen 61 bases this season compared to 14 from their opponents. HoosierAloha 1 Quote
