All I'm picturing with these places is a square plate with a tiny piece of meat and a leaf. Give me a $10 plate at Buffalouie's any day. I don't understand the high end places.

Portion sizes in this country are out of control though, we're used to seeing large portions of food but it comes at the expense of our health.  That's a different topic though.

Way different topic. I was going for what you see on a prototypical "high-end" plate doesn't even look like food to us mere mortals. Or when someone tries to tell me Kobe beef is worth the extra $100 (or however much it is), I look at them like they're nuts. Totally agree about portion sizes though. Hardee's is everything that's wrong with America lol.

Make no mistake, I can't afford to eat at fancy restaurants like this list has.  I don't even go to restaurants that are 15-16 dollars a plate for crying out loud.  I tend to subscribe to the theory that you pay for what you get, if it costs more there's usually a reason.  Not always, but usually.

Kobe beef can be like twice the cost of an American equivalent.  The cattle are specially selected (Wagyu cattle) so the quantity is limited, thus supply and demand causes the price to increase.  It wasn't exported at all until the last couple years.  We all know it's renowned as a delicacy.  If a restaurant in the states is offering Kobe they should also be eager to show off the authenticity, sometimes in here in the states what's being advertised as Kobe is really Wagyu cattle cross bred with Angus to meet demand.  Never had it, can't afford it.
