What's a college athlete worth?

Recommended Posts

"There's a great deal of debate and conversation about whether college athletes have the right to organize a union and, while the Northwestern leaders are focused more on insurance than pay-for-play, it raises the question: Just how much is a college athlete worth?

A study by Drexel University and the National College Players Association calculated the fair market value of a player between the years 2011 through 2015 and came up with a figure of $178,000 for football players. The biggest stars, like Johnny Manziel, might be worth as much as $547,000 (from 2011-12). The biggest money, though, is in college basketball, where the fair-market value for a player over the same time frame is $375,000. The players expected to be taken early in the NBA draft, like Andrew Wiggins of Kansas, might be worth upwards of $1.6 million.

"The bidding war for athletes would likely be in the millions," Ellen Staurowsky, a Drexel sports management professor and co-author of the report, said (via NBC News). "However, I think it all depends on whether or not a players' association ends up representing the teams and players. "The salaries could be effectively bargained to have some sort of minimum guaranteed salary for all."

The NCPA supports the Northwestern initiative to unionize college athletes and the methodology of the study hasn't been revealed, but it's a starting point as the debate over just what a college athlete is worth plays out"

But...But...they get a free education! That is worth about roughly $13,000 because they stay one year. Manziel, Wiggins, Parker etc bring in way more money than they are given in tuition. This is why the one and done rule is bunk. Schools make money off of these kids and love it. Manziel built the freaking addition to TA&M's stadium.

We did it guys! We made the list! Number 10 in basketball!

"Indiana

Fair Market value for individual player $690,016

value of scholarship $18,767

Missed fair market value $671,249

Missed fair market value over four years $2,684,996

In poverty? -$2,751

Scholarship shortfall -$3,282"

Still a million dollars behind Louisville (for each player)

Are you saying those figures are for 1 year of playing?  much more than I anticipated actually, but not difficult to imagine.   I doubt that if players do unionize and start getting paid, that they would be allowed that much per year...  I imagine things would start off small, around 50K-100K per year per player, but then it could easily gain momentum and get up to the figures you all are thinking the players are worth.

I could see paying the players as having a "run-a-way" effect in which the amount a player will receive will dictate where he will go to play in ncaa.  This could really broaden the gap in talent between major programs and mid/minor programs.  The majors would be able to offer the largest salaries, while the smaller programs get left in the dust because they could never afford the good players.

No schools except the top 10 would be able to afford to pay players that kind of money. DII and DIII would be gone. If this happens, my guess is we will have a very different college sports landscape with few programs participating.

I don't know a lot of the pros and cons for paying student athletes, but just on the surface to me it seems like a good idea that could go very very wrong.   Paying the college athletes in the 6 digits could potentially change the college sports landscape (as g_hi_c said above).

IMO, I think the players should make enough to be comfortable at school and have some spending money (if they need it), something like 50K to 100K...  What do you all think?

Could paying huge salaries be detrimental to the sport we all love? or could the 50K to 100K salary solve many of the issues and pressures the ncaa is feeling from it's student athletes?

It's a catch 22. You can't just pay the players who bring in money. But you can't have 2 or 3 guys at your school getting nothing and bringing in millions. The NCAA and it's TV deals and 40 freaking bowl games did this to themselves. Players are a brand now.

What if they pay them their scholarships with everything that is included now, and then pay them minimum wage as freshman and have a 25 to 50 cent raise each season. They can log their hours (need a way to monitor) and are paid hourly with no maximum hours other than whatever rules NCAA already has on practicing. This would give them some spending money and the feeling of being paid for their hard work. This would make them employees of the university.

This would also (hopefully) get them to realize what it is like to make minimum wage and why it is important to get your degree and work hard. Obviously they won't be able to receive a percentage of the money made off their jerseys and the tickets sold to see them play, but that's where they will have to understand they are collegiate athletes and it's just something that comes along with the deal.

Now I don't think they should be paid at all but I wouldn't mind that idea. One thing that irritates me is that they can't sign autographs and receive money because if someone is willing to pay them money for dumb reasons like that, so be it, it's not hurting any of us if they accept that money.
