B1G Men's BB Coaches - How do you rate them?

Recommended Posts

We're into the final month of the regular season and we've had a chance to watch the first year B1G bball coaches in action.  From what I've seen the rookie coaches have done a pretty good job and have definitely raised the bar in the league.

Here's how I'd rate the current class of B1G coaches based on the following factors: win/loss results; recruiting; program progress; player development; game preparation; and game management.  I'd be interested in reading how the rest of you would rank these guys.

1. Tom Izzo - MSU

2. Bo Ryan - Wisconsin

3. Thad Matta - OSU

4. Fran McCaffery - Iowa

5. Chris Collins - Northwestern

6. John Beilein - Michigan

7. Tim Miles - Nebraska

8. Rich Pitino - Minnesota

9. Pat Chambers - Penn St.

10. Tom Crean - Indiana

11.John Groce - Illinois

12. Matt Painter - Purdue

Overall, pretty good list in my opinion. Just a few changes for me.

1. Tom Izzo - MSU
2. Bo Ryan - Wisconsin
3. Thad Matta - OSU
4. John Beilein - Michigan
5. Fran McCaffery - Iowa
6. Chris Collins - Northwestern
7. Tim Miles - Nebraska
8. Rich Pitino - Minnesota
9. Tom Crean - Indiana
10. Pat Chambers - Penn St.
11. Matt Painter - Purdue
12. John Groce - Illinois

Beliein is a great coach in my opinion. Felt bad leaving him at #4 but the other three have sustained it longer.

When grading Coach Crean so low... Based on your criteria:

Recruiting: A-
Win Loss: C (should have won more this year, lost less last year)
Program Progress: B+
Player Development: B+
Game Planning: B
Game Management: F

I think Crean does have a method to his madness with Game Planning. He does draw up some great things, but teams adapt to that by the second half of each half and that's when IU gets exposed.

As far as game management... I'm not giving him an F to be cool or point fingers, I just honestly think he over coaches at the end of games specifically and it costs us dearly.
