How did we lose to Illinois? Their offense is nothing but drive and kick, drive and kick, shoot jump shots.

Because we turned it over 300 times?  This just shows that we really should have won, road game or not, so I really hope I stop hearing this "we were close" garbage.

Yes - exactly right.

By the way, our very young team is hard at work correcting their turnover issues, and they are making real progress if I'm not mistaken.

Real progress?  We played Penn State, can't really measure progress against them.

Like he*l we can't.

Penn State plays three quick guards and we did a nice job of protecting the ball. Wisconsin is a test a level higher. I betcha we do a pretty decent job.

Penn State is not a good team, which was my point it's just easier to do those things against bad teams.  I will not start feeling like we've turned some sort of corner until we do it against good teams and consistently.

Don't forget, we're only 2 games removed from a ridiculous 23 turnovers and 1 from a game with 15.  13 isn't too bad, although it could be better, but I'm not really convinced of progress yet seeing as we played a bad team.

I thought the 15 turnovers against Mich St (which I believe were mostly in the first half) was a stronger sign of progress than the Penn St performance. The Penn St 13 turnovers was a continuation of a good trend.

A bit of perspective; we only have one player handling the ball who played significant minutes for us last year.Turnovers should be expected, but progress should also be expected.

We're getting what we expected, aren't we?

In that Michigan State game our point guard had twice as many turnovers as assists.  The turnovers were split nearly evenly between halves, the careless unforced turnovers were reduced but it's still a sample size of one game and it's hard to draw conclusions from that.  Penn State is just a bad team, so we should've had less turnovers against them.  Cutting down the careless turnovers is a good sign, but I'm not going to try and draw conclusions from a sample size of only 2 games one of which was against a bad team.  If we have around 12 or 13 turnovers against Wisconsin, I'll say we're showing progress.  That'd be 3 games, 2 of which were against good teams.

We moved the ball better and tried less one on one, but it was still against a bad team.  Doing that against bad teams has never been really been the issue.  Every year we've had a problem of resorting to that against good teams, and struggling to score because of it.

Getting what we expected?  In what sense?  I still expected a tourney team and right now that's not what we are.  I've already explained why I'm hesitant to say we're showing progress.

I think we are but most of us were spoiled rotten with the team we had last year, so expectations are very high, although we underachieved last year lol

I'm one of them that says last year's team underachieved.  I care more about the NCAA tourney than a B1G title, and last year's team was capable of more than a Sweet 16.  Achieving less than you're capable of is the very definition of underachieving.

Wow, JS. Let's take it as a given that there are about 30 major conference teams each year in the tourney, and therein which are capable of winning the national title.

Under this logic every major conference team except for one underachieves each and every year. With those expectations, expect to be disappointed a whole lot no matter who you're rooting for.

Have to agree with you JS last years team underachieved big time. Preseason number one shouldn't get bounced in the sweet 16. I know it was a terrible matchup but IU didn't even look prepared. They even struggled against Temple the game before. I don't know it can't be an underachieving year.

Okay?  It doesn't change that we underachieved by the very definition of the word.

Oh, a poster on a different board tried making the argument that last year's team OVERachieved.  Their basis?  Some fans thought it might be the first NCAA appearance, around 2 years prior.  Laughable to say the least.

Way to completely derail the thread, guys.

Back to the topic…it's fun seeing Illinois lose and watching their fans go nuts, but let's hope our loss to them doesn't come back to bite us. I'll be disappointed if we don't drill them at home in a few weeks.
