Points are not coach's first concern with Will Sheehey

Recommended Posts

BLOOMINGTON When IU coach Tom Crean challenged Will Sheehey to be as productive statistically as he had been leading the young Hoosiers this season, he spoke first of rebounds, rather than points.

If points aren't Crean's first concern, then he got what he wanted from Sheehey in an 81-54 win Tuesday.

IU's senior forward finished with just three points, shooting 0-of-5 from the field, but he pulled in eight rebounds (one of three Hoosiers with at least that many). Sheehey also spent plenty of time guarding Travis Bader, Oakland's leading scorer and 3-point shooter, but his role in holding Bader to 0-of-10 shooting from behind the arc extended beyond just his match-up.

Eighteen points in his last four games won't do much for Sheehey's points-per-game average. But his teammates see Sheehey as important for more than just his scoring.

"Will has done a great job explaining things, helping out with switches, just having the whole team on the same page," said fifth-year transfer Evan Gordon, IU's leading scorer Tuesday night.

Sounds like he's doing just what's asked of him. I'm good with that.

I think it's great that he does all of the little things as the senior leader of the team.

BUT!

When he has an open shot, he should be making it. I wouldn't be as upset if he wasn't taking any shots in these games. He needs to finish when he gets close to the rim. I'm still a supporter, but I think he will adjust as the season goes on.
