General Coach Candidate News
Silat Player replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Agree with all of your points Stu, and I completely expressed myself incorrectly here. I was trying to make two completely different points. 1.) I think Dusty did an amazing job this year. 2.) I just hope that IU gets a coach who is good at Xs and Os. If IU does, that coach will do well from day 1. Dusty's ability to coach has allowed him to take a team of parts and adjust to that team to win at a pretty high level this year. It'll be interesting to see how well he'll do next year with a full year to prepare and having his first recruiting class already in place. I think he'll do really well because he's a superior coach. Wasn't really comparing Dusty to McCollum. My fault for not making that more clear... -

All of the conversations that we've been having about McCollum and how he would do next year and what kind of adjustments he would need to make in his coaching just shows how well Dusty did this year. Yes, Michigan is fading a bit, but he's done an amazing job. He had to cobble together a roster on the fly. He had a major step-up in competition and he still finished top 5 in a major conference. I think Dusty proved that IU needs a guy who can really coach. An Xs and Os guy. If you have somebody like that, they can win from the start. That's what IU has been missing with every hire since RMK (with the obvious exception of Sampson). I would have no problem getting a coach who would have to grow into the job a bit if I knew that IU's coach wouldn't be the worse coach on the floor every night. I wonder what that feels like? LOL -

Have you never known any coaches? Even high school coaches have relationships with D1 coaches. I guarantee you that McCollum has relationships with all sorts of head coaches and assistant coaches, and not just D2 coaches. It's not a large fraternity and he's been involved in coaching for like 15 years. Just because he's spent a lot of D2 doesn't mean that he only has contacts with D2 coaches. That's just silly... -

Or Mike Shula or Mike Price or Dennis Franchione or Mike Dubose. They went through a pretty rough stretch too. -

No, I don't think you'd have to "surround" McCollum with at least one elite recruiter. I think that McCollum would need to hire at least one elite recruiter of his own choosing. But, let's be honest. What coach of ANY major bball program doesn't have at least one ace recruiter on staff? It's just part of the job. -

IU basketball is more akin to Alabama football. It is located in a fertile recruting ground, has a storied history and has a lot of resources, along with a rabid fanbase. It is also a high-pressure job that has eaten-up and spit-out more than a few coaches. However, if you hire the right coach, the program can win big. The comparisons to Nebraska football have always been dumb. -

That was a decision that really makes me question Dolson's job ability. In what universe did he think that was a good idea? You don't "force" others on a new coach. You allow a new coach to choose their assistants and consultants. As AD, you may make recommendations, but you never just hire anyone as part of a package deal with a coach. I understand that Woody had zero college experience, but that's why you don't hire him in the first place. Whoever Dolson hires, he needs to have this conversation with his candidate: "What would you need from me to best support you if you got the IU head coaching job?" -

Yep. Goodman is a complete complete dbag and loves to tweak IU fans, but he does have good sources. His recent tweet was NOT good news. At all... -

Yesterday was wild and I wondered how today would be in here. It has definitely been different, but has not disappointed. Have definitely been hearing some names that weren't on my bingo card. LOL -

Well, if we're trying to avoid he-who-shall-not-be-named possible alcohol transgressions, I'm not sure that Huggy Bear is the way to go. LOL -

Not saying I necessarily disagree, but IU can't keep doing what Woodson is doing either. The next coach has to actually recruit and develop some young players too. That WILL require some time as well. The new coach will also need to develop a new culture and install a new system. But, the NCAA tournament isn't an unrealistic expectation at all IMO. -

I think everyone feels that way. The criticism that the fanbase receives about being irrationally impatient is completely unfounded. If the new coach doesn't succeed at a high level initially but shows progress and builds a solid programmtic base is being formed and demonstrates solid coaching chops, the fanbase will show patience. -

Stevens Drew - Younger and more outgoing. I worry about Few's introverted personality and age. And, of course, the fact that he's coached in a mid-major for years. McCollum - I wouldn't be unhappy with this choice. Turgeon (this one is a joke) - ABW - Anyone but Woody Byington - Love Devries, but I find Byington really intriguing. Not ready for a job like IU, but I think he's going to be great. Collins - Can't ignore Gates' awful season. Otzelberger - Otz is my choice after Stevens. He's young and has done a great job at a tough place to win big. -

I don't think IU will hire Beard, but I also don't think popularity among IU's academic staff is going to be any kind of deciding factor. I've been on college BoTs before, and I don't think they always care about how popular the president is. In fact, in one instance, the president was brought in prescisely to "be the bad guy" and enact unpopular policies for the BoT. I have long suspected that Whitten has that kind of role for the BoT at IU. The votes against Whitten by professors don't really matter right now and hiring a coach that further reduces her popularity won't matter either. Heck, she just got an extension. However, I agree with the people who factor in Beard's record and baggage that conclude that there are much better candidates. -

I have trouble buying today's Otz rumor. I would think that Otz would have the most incentive to keep any agreement secret at this point, with his team still playing and getting ready for the tourney. I don't buy it at all... -

It looks good on paper and, in theory, should be true. IU has made so many bad hires for so long. It is hard to believe that they will make a good hire for the bball program until a good coach is actually introduced. I know everyone claims that Dolson has a plan and is working it, and that QB is responsible for Woodson, but Scott IS the guy who actually hired him. And gave him a 4th year. I'm obviously saying the quiet part out loud. Back to the optimism. Let's get Brad F*cking Stevens... -
