This. If Dolson already doesn't know quite a bit about each of the coaches on the list, prior to hiring the search firm, then he hasn't been doing his job. He already knew he would be hiring a new coach this year. Heck, he should have already been ready to hire a new bball coach last year. -

Painter has proven that. And there have been countless people over the years who have shown that the schools with the top recruiting classes don't necessarily win the national championship. There is a middle ground between getting a few elite recruits and finding guys who are glue guys in your system. -

I think the "IU Brand" is still somewhat of a lure nationally. I do, however, think we got a preview of how this search was going to go by looking at the Kentucky and L'ville searches last year. Unless a coach has a reason to leave a high-profile job, I think that most schools are going to hire someone from a "lesser" program at this point. Or an assistant. That seems to be the trend, anyway. If IU does it too, I don't think it says anything about IU's program necessarily. If so, then it also says something about Kentucky (mid-major), L'Ville (mid-major), Duke (assistant), UNC (assistant). And yes, I know that Duke and UNC got alums, but still. -

Agreed. From a "managing expectations" viewpoint, this would be a terrible idea. -

And I think this is the ideal time to hire an up-and-coming coach at IU. It's a great time for IU to create the GM/Player personnel structure in the athletic department, and a new, younger coach would probably be more apt to be receptive to using that than an older, more established coach. This is the perfect opportunity for Dolson to create a completely 21st century basketball program at IU - the complete opposite of what Woody had. -

The last hire that would be considered "great" was Roy Williams. He went from Kansas to UNC. I do understand Williams' link to UNC, but still the move was surprising. I guess Self would've been considered outstanding as well, because he led a B1G team to the final four before going to Kansas. It doesn't seem like those type of hirings occur much anymore. If you see a "big time" coach move, like Cal to Arkansas, there's usually a reason, like the coach has kind of worn out their welcome at their previous school. EDIT: I'm sure that I'm missing some. I was just pointing out that these types of moves just don't seem to happen much at all anymore. -

With a boatload of cash. Don't forget about the money. It's the only thing that has kept Woody barely afloat. -

Agreed. And the cryptic references are getting a little old. My mind is too addled to figure out the relevance of how a meme from an "insider" pertains to the status of the coaching search. At this point, I need an IU version of the Enigma machine...LOL -

The key here is that you must have a coach who is open to structure. Woody has always seemed so egocentric/egomaniacal that he wouldn't take advantage of any such structure. You need a coach who is well-organized and would thrive in such a structure and use it to his advantage. -

I'm sorry. I guess I don't see the connection between this guy taking the GM position at Arkansas and the IU coaching position. If Brad Stevens had signed with IU and it was so well known in the Boston organization that members of the staff were taking other positions because of it, then that info would've leaked by now. So how is this relevant exactly? LOL I think occam's razor would indicate that the most likely scenario is that this guy was looking for more/new experience and took an opportunity... -

I have our answer. People have talked about former Maryland coach Turgeon. And Dolson loves former retired coaches. And we've been talking about Wade? How about former Maryland coach Bob Wade? He has experience. And he's only 80 or so, I think...
