General Coach Candidate News
Silat Player replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Good sports programs are given the freedom to operate somewhat independently from the BS of the academic side. That was part of the success that RMK had - the president and AD insulated him from all of that. It can obviously go too far - I give you SMU and UNC. LOL But there's no way that places like Duke, OSU and Alabama would have the success that they do w/o the athletic departments being allowed to function somewhat independently. -

KathyC is obviously a huge troll, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if she/he works in academia on some level. This isn't to offend anyone on BTB who does work at a university, but it is a strange place to work if you've only ever worked at a private for-profit kind of company. Her responses kind of show some of the issues that might indicate some of the reasons why IU has sucked over the past 25 years. How she focuses on minor, unrelated things (like grammar, etc...) or emphases "process" to a comical degree - that's true. I've seen it with my own eyes. I worked as a consultant for a couple of major universities and actually sat on a BoT for 2 smaller colleges at one time. I would almost laugh out loud at some of the issues that were brought up. It's that kind of stuff that totally goes on in college administrations that weighs down even easy decisions. Don't get me wrong. Massive bureaucracy and groupthink and minor issues can sometimes be a huge problem at for-profit companies too (IBM in the 60s is a famous example that is taught in some biz schools), but it seems to be a regular part of life in unis today. I wonder what kinds of crazy conversations went on behind the scenes at IU led to the hiring of Woodson? And what kinds of stupid conversations are going on right now? Just a thought. There ARE lots of ACTUAL KathyCs in the admin of IU right now. Remember that. -

This. If Dolson doesn't have his candidate locked up at this point, then HE should be fired. He had every opportunity in the world to have his choice of candidates due to Woody being axed half-way through the season. There's zero excuse for him not to already have an agreement worked out and ready to sign ASAP the season ends. It would be absolute professional malpractice if that didn't happen. Period. -

Good question. Although, wouldn't it be the most IU-thing ever to overpay on a buy-out for a coach like Brownell? LOL -

I think KathyC might be AI. No one actually speaks on sports board like she does, right? She's such a weird combination of dismissive, self-righteous and oddly formal. -

Yep. If Dolson's two basketball hires would be Mike Woodson and Brad Brownell? That would not exactly be a stellar legacy. -

I have to push back on that. According to you, Woodson actually "retired" of his own accord. Dolson was going to wait until the end of the season and then evaluate Woodson and the program at that point. However, the announcers at every game, after Woodson "retired," were making comments that seemed to indicate that Woody implied to them that he was pushed out of the program. Nothing about "retirement" seemed voluntary at all. But it's the "process" that IU always follows, right? LOL -

Based on past history, I might trust what Bozich put out more often than most. That's why Brownell really worries me at this point. -

If Brownell would really be the hire, after Woody. Well, all I can say is that he'd better win. Otherwise, there will be a portion of the fanbase that is going to be calling out Dolson, rather than just the coach, next time. Two bad hires in a row isn't going to sit well with the fanbase, regardless of how Cignetti does. -

It looks like people maybe weren't specific enough in their prayers. "God, please bring us Brad as coach as coach for IU basketball." He's might bring us the wrong Brad... -

Losing McNally (I'm sure that Woodson called him that at least once) and replacing him with a last minute 5-star who underachieved and didn't work out was a perfect metaphor for Mike Woodson's entire time at IU. -

Just from strictly a medical perspective, Pitino is really skinny. He's kind of built to be one of those old men who function well into their old years. McDermott is a bigger guy. You don't see nearly as many bigger dudes carrying around a lot of weight who don't run into myriad medical issues earlier on. Weight makes a huge difference in quality of life in what we would consider retirement years for "normal people" (non-legislators, non-coaches, etc...). -

So you joked about McDermott earlier (saying it was going to be his son), but now you claim that it's going to be the pop? Color me sceptical...LOL However, the betters have been on McDermott from the start, so I guess I shouldn't brush this idea off at all. -

Or, Goodman just heard that from someone that BM interviewed with IU's search committee and that there was interest from both sides. Occam's razor, ya know? No cloke and dagger stuff. -

1.) I have no idea why people have been so triggered by Goodman's BM tweet. He didn't really say anything that hadn't already been suspected by those on this forum. 2.) I have no idea why so many people think that BM would require such a huge support system to function as the coach at IU. He's been a coach for a long time. I'm sure he knows a lot of people already and knows how the recruiting system works and knows AAU folks, etc... And I don't care who the coach is, every program needs both a GM now and an ace recruiter. A GM is just a necessity with the payments and NIL and the transfer portal. And even RMK had an ace recruiter. Anyone remember Joby Wright? He was responsible for RMK's last truly great class... -
