They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
go iu bb replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I have no emotional connection to Woodson the player since I was way too young to remember him. I don't like Woodson the coach even a little bit so I'm perfectly fine with him getting booed and having to hear chants for him to be fired for the rest of the season. I'm also okay with the blowout losses piling up on his record. If these things don't get someone who "loves" IU to resign/retire in the best interest of the program, he's totally earned them and can reap his rewards for all I care. -

Yeah, it's ridiculous to think that with all the negative pub Woodson has been getting that coaches wouldn't know why he was fired if they fired him mid-season. Everyone who pays even a little bit of attention to college basketball knows. If they didn't know, a quick google would make it obvious. -

This roster did bring in better guards than last year but it wasn't built for 4 out. Reneau was already on the roster and better as a 5 than a 4. MM was also on the roster and better as a 4 than a 3. Yet they decided to pay a bunch of money to bring Ballo in. That sealed the fate that it was mainly going to be 2 bigs all year long instead of 4 out. They also brought in guards/wings that were better at driving and mid-range shots than 3-pointers. Goode was the only 3-point shooter they brought in. So I very much disagree that this was a roster built to play 4 out. I do, however, agree that a good coach would have this team playing much better and would have a much better record. -

Yes. In the offseason there was a lot of chest thumping by the Woodson defenders about the talent on the team. They pretty much ignored it when we said, "Yeah, but they'll still be 'coached' by Woodson so it still won't be a very good team." Woodson's coaching ability was also taken into account by the preseason rankings which had them lower than they should've been with the talent brought in. So a decent coach could certainly do well with if all those with eligibility remained next season. That said, there isn't anyone on this team that I would miss. I wouldn't be upset with a total turnover in the program, players included. I at very least want Woodson, all 3 assistant coaches, and Marshall to all be replaced. Others like Cheaney and Hulls, meh, don't care either way. -

His hands are tied by this roster the GM gave him. He would totally play 4 out if he had the roster. But you have to play your best players together, no way around that. -

I think part of the problem for him was a lack of speed bumps on Walnut. -

I highly doubt there was that meeting. You don't go to subordinates to check if they want to fill in temporarily before firing their boss. You fire their boss then see who wants to fill in. Someone will take the position and, since it's only temporary, it doesn't matter who. One of them would see this as a way to jumpstart their career to move from a role as AC to HC. -

I'm sensing a theme here but it's hard to put my finger on what it is... Woodson needs to change his cigar brand? No, that's not it. Hmm, he needs to play more golf? Oh, Woodson should get fired! I agree. -

What is this? You expect hard coaching every game? It's a long season, 82 31 whole games. You have to pace yourself. -

In other words, he performed a feat that hasn't been matched at IU in over 100 years. Not even Bob Knight was able to do it. We're witnessing greatness. -

Why isn't Woodson getting credit for his excellent coaching at the end of the game? He got it down to a single digit loss when they were down by 14 with 3 minutes left. That's some quality coaching. -

Yes, he is. He was under that name here for a while but changed it some time back. Waaaay back I believe he was on Rivals (peegs at that time) with that name, too. -

I think that if IU loses the rest of the games in25+ point blowouts, he'll stay. They'll look at his record setting ways and extend him. The contract will give him a $20M/year raise. It'll be a "Woodson's choice" (his choice of when to leave) contract which will be for 30 year and means that the university will be unable to replace him no matter what. Even if he dies they won't be able to replace him. At the end of that 30 years, he (or his estate) will receive a bonus of $2B. This is the power that Buckner has. You're right, @Hornsby, making up ridiculous **** that won't happen is fun! -

Too bad, so sad.

ESPN's too early top 25. They have IU at 17. Still not getting much respect. Cig and the team will just have to show them again. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/43452580/way-too-early-college-football-top-25-ranking-2025

It's 42 in Phoenix. Should be 60ish this afternoon. So, yeah, a bit warmer here. Not exactly a cold day in hell so Woodson should go. -

Not a concern. IU just throttled Michigan, whose women's team is top 10. The rankings are based on the top of the roster, those who might score at NCAAs. IU is better at the top and is also much deeper. -

IU diving getting some press of their own. It's deserved and if IU wins a national championship this year it'll be because the divers played a large part. They've played a large part in the great finishes IU has had recently. IU diving has produced for a long time. Pretty cool that they're getting facilities that other schools don't have. https://swimswam.com/what-sets-iu-diving-apart-and-how-that-could-be-the-determining-factor-at-the-2025-mens-ncaas/
