They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Guys, @Stuhoo is right, objectively. Most programs including the bluebloods give coaches 4 years to develop their roster, recruiting, system and track record before throwing in the towel and forking over the large buyouts that come with breaking the contract— which amounts are higher in the earlier years. Woodson went 21-14 and 23-12 his first 2 years and made the tourney. Some of us, me for sure, couldn’t stand his 2-big “system” that completely ignored the perimeter game, but it wasn’t clear after 2 years that he would fail or not develop better teams at IU. It’s clear now TJD carried him, but it wasn’t then. Year 3 put his failures on full display imo, and I was one who wanted him gone then, but there’s NIL now and the ability to quickly reload, so more reason to give a HC a 4th year to show what he can do — and Woodson then did very well in the portal. A good (even decent) coach would be winning with this roster — the roster is not flawed, that Woodson is just a bad, outdated system-running, inflexible, flawed coach is now fully clear. He’ll be gone after this season. That was the realistic likelihood after year 3. Btw, Archie Miller is now 11-1 at Rhode I. Lol -

Christmas / New Years present suggestion for @Stuhoo! Someone (anyone) get Woody fired by the New Years, and I will: 1) throw my percolator in the trash, and 2) bow down before Stuhoo as the Coffee God of Indiana, the Maker of Java, the Bean Buddha Motivation... -

This just in — IU’s Administration denies rumors that every season under Woodson is a social experiment on fan loyalty -
This guy and Trav's writeup has made for an interesting topic. Mods - maybe time for a potential new coach candidates thread? (I imagine Dolson has started to look at options for next season....)

Aint over till the fat lady sings (and there are a slew of quad 1 games in conference) - we haven’t missed anything yet. But the fat lady is stumbling all over the stage… -

If we miss the tournament with this team no way Woodson is back. -

It's bad enough that Woodson either can't or refuses to coach modern basketball. His inability to develop players kills any chance that's left. He hasn't developed anyone. He let TJD take over, which allowed those teams to perform at least decently (but they were killed by shooting teams and couldn't advance in the tourney bc of Woodson's complete lack of perimeter schemes). But he didn't even develop TJD's shooting. In stark contrast, Crean developed multiple players into NBA players and pros. It's genuinely amazing to see how much better a coach Crean was than Woodson -- from recruiting, to player development, to offensive schemes and winning. Just amazing. (Under Crean, Gunn would've developed into a key player, etc. etc. etc.) Fire this man, right the ship, that it's time for a top-down change couldn't be clearer. -

Ok I have changed my opinion about Woodson: Even Archie Miller was (is) a better coach. -

I think -- hope -- this is right. -
I also have a glass-half full kernel of hope that we'll gut out this W against a mediocre Neb team. On the other hand Neb defends the rim well and turns teams over, both of which play against us, and it's at Neb. Picking Neb, with the idea that the bball Gods will then laugh at me and have IU win. Neb - 77 IU - 73

Agree generally re Nebraska, as I said earlier it's depressing that we look up at Nebraska on the schedule and (many) expect a L. Nebraska is a mediocre bball team and program, and yes expecting a L is because of Woodson and says a lot about how far down the program is under CMW's watch and outdated, low-product offensive (in both senses) system. That said, I try to think big picture on the season. We have double digit Q1 games coming and this is IU's first true road game against a team that hasn't lost yet at home. We're deeper on talent, certainly a winnable game, but if we lose close in a hard fought game then there's at least reason to believe they'll continue to get better. If we get blown out by Nebraska -- that's an entirely different picture.

From one of the betting sites. So basic, yet still lost on Woodson. How, I have no idea. "Indiana still has some offensive concerns, particularly in the shooting and turnover departments. Although the Hoosiers shot 35% from 3, they attempt treys on just 29% of their field goal attempts. The lack of perimeter jumpers allows defenses to sag off Malik Reneau on the perimeter. Also, Oumar Ballo is a total non-shooter, so teams will dare Indiana to launch from deep.... Still, Mackenzie Mgbako is the lone shooter who instills fear in opposing defenses. Mgbako is a very dynamic offensive weapon who shoots 51% from the floor and 43% from 3. While starting guards Myles Rice and Trey Galloway shoot good percentages from downtown, both launch 2.4 3s or fewer per game. That isn't enough to scare defenses." This falls into the category of "duh". How Woodson can continue to run the same stupidly limited perimeter offense is mind boggling. Nebraska favored 3.5, and yes, this is IU's first true road game

To watch another game Much patience will I need But more alcohol I think

It's kind of demoralizing to see Nebraska on the schedule and expect a L. It's Nebraska, random average team. I tend to expect a L, on the road, they're undefeated at home and we were so terrible against Ville and Gonzaga. Can't wait until Woodson is gone and we have a coach I believe in again, running modern basketball schemes, not living in his own decades old world of no longer relevant ball.
