They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Deserthoozier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Appreciate your input and insight. Some might suggest that it’s exactly the bureaucratic inefficiency of such a committee based ‘IU process’ that has inhibited men’s basketball success for 30 years!!! Sometimes decision makers need to make quick choices, sink or swim…and then be held accountable. Balancing what success is by committee can be tediously bureaucratic and often lead to mediocre or poor results. -

In the joyful spirit of alliteration, might I then kindly suggest “Malodorous Mike”? -

Not a mod here, or anything close, but would like to propose a thread amendment… this forum is generally democratic (small d), thus, I think a second and/or 3rd ‘aye’ on the amendment should be more than sufficient to pass it. I do not want to take ownership for the thought…as someone else a hundred or so pages back actually initiated the argument… Be it declared, from here until employment separation with Indiana University…Mike Woodson no longer merits the title of ‘Mediocre’. While it is the season to be generous, some things are so over the top untrue that to ‘give’ that much simply is unconscionable. There is nothing “Mediocre” about Mike. Upon his hiring, our hope was that he was “Mediocre” at worst, and ideally much better. That hope is now completely gone. Call him many things, almost anything…just not ‘mediocre’, b/c he’s not. Not even close! -

No way he makes it to January. The optics and negative publicity are just too horrendous for the program, and generally pretty knowledgeable fan base, to weather. In the social media age, everyone knows we hired the best mercenaries possible, and have top three NCAA NIL. The one constant the past 4 years has been ‘0-0’. (Those are glasses looking for the inevitable hump to get over) And that’s exactly what EVEREYONE will be talking about from here until the end of March. IU fails w/one of the highest paid rosters. Team schematics completely outdated. Fans booing and are worst enemies of their program. Recruiting will die worse than it already has, fan apathy will crank up to levels never seen. We’ve delved in here before, but not this bad…and not after the coach middle fingered a big portion of the fan base who was justifiably frustrated with his performance. It will be a VERY dangerous place to go. I know it’s off brand for IU to make mid-season moves, but at this point it becomes a major business risk management decision. (It should have been viewed as such last Spring FFS, but we know how that went.) At this point, the risk of keeping him presents FAR greater potential damage to the program, short and longer term, than any potential reward. Either that, or our athletic department, board and overall administration is completely inept. Get ready for Interim Coach Cheaney! -
Mark it…Armond Hill’s going to step in today and really maximize the ‘strategic direction’ he is charged with bringing to the team. It’s been his role since day 1 - to advise Woody on strategy…he’s just been holding back 3.5 yrs for the right moment - and that day is today!!! Put the mortgage on +9.5. Or perhaps that’s the line on how many times his eyes close over 15 secs during the game. Turkey consumption prior to tipoff certainly will impact the line — Armond warms up to that tryptophan like butter melts in a hot pan!!

True, but only when Mike Woodson tells Mike Woodson it’s time for some questioning! -

Sadly, at this point, 1 loss PU - every time! Faith in coaching, maximizes talent, gets team to peak at the right time. Been to Championship game w/in past year. Doesn’t have to schedule cupcake city pre-B1G in order to try to have enough wins to squeak into the tourney. The colors really suck, and the mascot is really f’in freaky…but, it’s a no brainer for most of us! -

Team looks very unconnected…especially for how experienced this group is. Don’t care if it’s early in the season. These guys have been together since spring and/or early summer. Some may say that’s on the players. It’s certainly not a talent issue. Pretending like it’s not a coaching issue is becoming a major stretch! How long do some keep trying to sell us on how nice the emperor’s new cloths look? -

I think everyone is just done seeing season after season wasted with little optimism for change in the future until THE CHANGE is made. 21 wins as a ceiling and first round out doesn’t cut it. Hope we’re wrong about this season - but the days of ‘give em 4 yrs to bring in their own guys’ and the optics of having a quick trigger finger are long gone. This is big time professional sports…and we’ve smoldered the brand and product for far too long. Bring in someone who is willing to bet on themselves and not feel like the job is an entitlement. We’re all on page 1183 of a message board talking about firing a guy b/c he hasn’t shown success and is arrogant. Of course there’s going to be anger. -

And everyone on here has been absolutely soooo adamant that he hasn’t learned a thing from Armond Hill! Cmon people!! -
Woody’s success has been linked to dropping big bags, to bring in last minute talent - and convincing TJD to come back - twice! Not game day acumen, team construction or motivation (ie coaching). Archie was neutered from Woody’s advantages from the get go b/c NIL wasn’t a thing yet, and the potential to play in under the table money was cut off completely b/c of his brother’s tie up in the FBI scandal at the time. Archie’s coaching chops left a tremendous amount to be desired as well…but, to say Woody’s the better college coach is stretching it. Much better talent, slightly better results - neutral coaching at best.

“Hi, Armond Hill here! Let me tell you, Woody’s always right — I mean just ALL THE TIME! It’s just uncanny!!” Quietly collecting my $200k of taxpayer funds. Best seat in the house and can still get a solid nap in, bout every game. My biggest strategy help…’just listen to Coach Woodson everyone!’

Word is that Walsh was seeking his same position, open at Ohio State over the summer. Didn’t get it though. (He’s from Ohio).

I promise you, $10MM (difference between what adidas is giving KU v. IU) a year makes a BIG difference whether it be basketball or football!
-
Cash to the Uni is critical to athletic success..in the past, right now, and well into future. It pays for coaches, assistants, soon to be players (direct from Uni w/pending NCAA settlement) and EVERYTHING else needed to be competitive. A dollar in is one less needed…so boosts NiL and everything else. If you care to be competitive…you’ve got to care about the $$…like it or not. on the brands themselves…who cares, but Nike is generally cooler than adidas w/kids…but they won’t really care if their getting a better deal. Generally viewed in US as more innovative design and technology than Adidas
-
Not sure…not that I’ve seen, but probably a lot of them still waiting to re-up. But, how insulting that KU’s value is 3x to Adidas than IU’s. No wonder Gassnola wasn’t sending any guys our way…except in 11th hour deals. Louisville’s terms, when they had Pitino, were even more egregious. if were the preeminent soccer program, and they’re the preeminent soccer gear brand…then it sure seems like we just said ok. maybe we’d of been better off getting online at Nike
