They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
AZ Hoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
But then there's Buckner to deal with... win/lose/draw, Buckner's got Woodson's back... and as solid of a move as it would be to send Woodson packing, I just don't see it happening with Buckner is the saddle. -

They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
AZ Hoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I sent this off to the Board of Trustees and Scott Dolson on Saturday afternoon: TO: Scott Dolson, W. Quinn Buckner, Cindy Lucchese, Cathy Langham, Jeremy A. Morris, J. Timothy Morris, Kyle S. Seibert, Donna B. Spears, Isaac Torres and Vivian Winston Shame on you. Shame on you all. I assume you will be getting a lot of these kinds of emails today. Or, maybe not. The Indiana University basketball fans are totally over this coaching nightmare. I wasn't personally in favor of the hire when you and Scott Dolson chose to hire Mike Woodson to lead the Hoosiers Men's basketball team. That said, I was was willing to give it a chance. I am now totally over it. I just sat through the most embarrassing loss (at home v Penn State) that I can remember in all of my years watching IU basketball. The issues with Mike Woodson as head coach are numerous. He cannot recruit to build a complete and competitive roster. The roster that he has constructed is completely lacking in serviceable guards. And despite the obvious holes in this roster, he chose to leave one scholarship open even though everyone knew we needed more guards. Instead of bringing in some guards he brought in Walker and Sparks, two more wings who rarely see the court. Woodson is incapable of coaching any style other than stale, circa 2008 NBA style, complete with "NHL hockey line change" substitution patterns. He apparently is incapable of making in-game adjustments, has no real offensive scheme, and does not appear to have taught the basic defensive concepts. His arrogant attitude at post game press conferences ("I am not going to sit here and answer that question from the fans or you") is offensive. No one, including the Athletic Director or the Board of Trustees, has taken the necessary steps to hold him accountable. Additionally, he's mostly absent on the recruiting trail, leaving that responsibility to his assistant coaches. Despite the better than good chance of a mass exodus of the current roster next year (to the NBA and/or the portal), he has managed to sign a single recruit for next year. The "Mike Woodson" experiment is an abysmal failure. And if we were totally honest, the hire itself was a mistake. There is no way Woodson was on anyone's list as a potential college head coach, and except for him being an Indiana alumnus, he would not have garnered any interest anywhere. He had ZERO college experience, and no understanding of the energy needed to travel, recruit, teach and coach young men to be a part of the great tradition that is Indiana University basketball. I urge you to relieve Mike Woodson of his coaching duties TODAY. What we have is totally unacceptable and should not happen at Indiana University. It is obvious that he is not totally dedicated to the hard work on the recruiting front that a college basketball coach needs. This team plays with no passion or enthusiasm and is a direct reflection on the energy level, personality and tenacity of the coach. Woodson often appears uninterested and shows no emotion on the court. I sincerely believe that he had no idea what the job entailed or what amount of effort and energy would be required.I sincerely believe that Woodson was not qualified and should never been hired to coach Indiana basketball. It's time to "pull the plug" on this failed experiment. Indiana University deserves a young, energetic coach who has both the desire and ability to lead this program into the future. And the fans deserve a program of which we can once again be proud. ----------------------------- I received this from whomever screens their emails... at least I know it got there. Whether it generates any action, as doubtful as I am, remains to be seen. Dear Mr. xxxxxxxxxxxx, Thank you for taking the time to write to the trustees of IU to express your concerns. I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your email in the Office of the Board of Trustees and to note that it has been forwarded for further review. Sincerely, Office of the Board of Trustees -

Maybe they did… but Tom Allen was never being protected by his Buddy, Quinn Buckner… New mantra: Friends don’t let friends embarrass themselves as a bad coach. -

Buckner, from all reports, is the only voice that matters... and Woodson is his boy, so unfortunately for the Hoosier Nation, Woodson will be back... should not happen, but well, It's Indiana. -
First of all, with 11 years experience between them, you'd think that there would be some leadership skills, as well. And given XJs tendency to be hurt, how could Woodson expect to get any quality and consistency out of him... and with Gunn and Cupps as the contingency plan, how can he leave a scholarship open? Pure incompetence.

Not sure it matters what he says to Dolson... Dolson is nothing more than a neutered puppet, and the only voice that matters is Buckner... which means nothing is changing in the foreseeable future. -

You left off "have a reasonable coaching philosophy" and "find a way to implement it". Screw it... he won't be able to pull any of that off, so just can his butt today. -
First, the program is already broken. Just pull the plug already. Second, Woodson cannot/will not course correct. He's too arrogant and his ego is too large to allow for him to admit anything he thinks or does is wrong. Finally, Woodson is the cancer on this team. His post game press conferences are full of his arrogance, his hubris, his "not going to throw his players under the bus" until he does (in the next sentence), he takes credit for the wins and any positive outcomes, but blames others (players) for the losses and shortcomings.

the story I read (maybe here) was that the "string" on the donor's funds may have been tied to hiring Stevens alone... Get him, here's the cash... if he says "no", give it back... meaning that the alleged $7M figure was ONLY for Stevens and when he said no, the cash was not available for another coach. -

We aren't hiring anyone to be a priest... but character still matters... and roughing up a woman is not the type of character I want to see on the IU sidelines... let Ole Miss keep him... sitting at 5-4 in the SEC isn't really setting the basketball world on fire, either... -

IF ONLY... sadly, not sure the administration cares enough to even notice... the needle isn't moving, and as long as the current administration remains in place, I think that we're still near the beginning of the downward spiral... And I honestly don't get Buckner. Indiana basketball made him who he is, and he treats the program like toilet paper stuck on his shoe... I mean, doesn't he really see what his buddy Woodson is doing to destroy the program? It was a flawed hire from the start, but c'mon, man, own the screw up and negotiate Woodson to retirement golf.

And the way they've suddenly redefined it prior to this season...
