  1. It’s the polar opposite of the most comparable workplace. The nba has a salary cap, minimum salaries, maximum salaries. Rookie contracts giving teams multiple years of control over their draft picks. None of that exists in today’s NCAA. Some of these guys IU is targeting, like Ballo, for example, really aren’t transferring because they want a change of scenery, want a bigger role, etc. He was a vital starter on a 27-9 sweet 16 season. They’re transferring for a paycheck. IU appears to be a beneficiary of the system, so some are fine with it, but I think it’s terrible for the sport. My controversial take of the day is that the players need the schools far more than vice versa. By and large, fans watch/show up to games because of the schools, not to watch particular players. Every now and then you get a transcendent player like Caitlyn Clark, but that’s rare. Players are mostly interchangeable. Take Alabama’s football team, take off the Alabama uniform, slap on a Tuscaloosa Tiger uniform, and maybe 10k people show up for novelty reasons. It’d be just another semi-pro league. So, I kind of reject the premise that the players are the reason the schools are making all this money. NIL makes me wish that players that players could just go pro right out of high school. Take the top 30 or so recruits out of each class and college sports would chug along just fine. But, I recognize that this is where we are in college athletics, and it’s probably just going to get worse.
  2. Obviously they don’t know about all the cookin’ Woody’s billionaire buddies have been doing this spring.
  3. College sports as they currently exist are bastardized versions of professional sports. They’re professional sports without salary caps and without contracts. Players can come and go as they please, playing for whoever they want in a given season. It’s a terrible setup and needs to be corralled big time.
  4. It’s nothing new. We’ve been that type of program for years.
  5. What’s the point of coming into this thread and intentionally trying to start **** with people? There’s a dozen other threads to pump sunshine in. We’ve been relegated to this thread but you’re hellbent on getting rid of this one too.
  6. These burner accounts really are the absolute worst. IU, winning the offseason once again! Woodson barely has anything to do with IU *potentially* landing these portal players anyway. They’re coming here because IU will pay them the most, which is happening because Woodson’s buddies gave more NIL money. He probably doesn’t even remember the players’ names.
  7. Well we found one of the eight yes votes.
  8. I’m tired of Mike Woodson the person in addition to his mediocre coaching at this point, so there’s really nothing he could do to get me to start supporting him again. I just want him gone.
  9. Watch Woodson do just enough to keep his job after next year. A tournament appearance and first round exit 100% will get him another year. Ugh. Should’ve hired a real coach but kept the same NIL amount.
  10. Meh. You’re fighting an uphill battle if you need to use context to argue that you hired a “top guy.” You don’t need context if you hire Hurley, Oats, Drew, Pearl, etc. Pope’s made the tournament twice as a head coach and lost to a lower seed both times. Maybe he ends up excelling there. No one knows the future. But I feel pretty good about UK’s hire as someone who doesn’t want UK to succeed.
  11. He’s been a D1 head coach for 9 seasons. 0 tournament wins. 0 conference championships and 0 conference tournament championships. Nothing about his resume says top coach. It’s not as bad of a hire as Mike Woodson was, but it’s also not a hire you push John Calipari out to make.
  12. Man if UK can’t land a top coach, who the heck are we going to land next year?
  13. Calipari choked in the tournament the past three years which is why UK fans wanted him gone so bad (imagine them with our results), but his teams were still pretty good in the regular season/conference play. 39-15 (72.2%) in the SEC the past three seasons. Woody, for example, is 31-29 in a worse conference. Maybe the Pope does well but I highly doubt he’ll win enough to satisfy the UK fanbase.
  14. Calipari just finished t-2nd in the SEC at 13-5. He had another great class coming in. He’s not as good as he was pre-covid, but saying Pope is a “significant upgrade” is an exaggeration… He has 0 tournament wins in 9 seasons as a coach. You don’t push Calipari out to hire someone with his resume.
  15. UK went full iubb. Never go full iubb.
  16. Given our own depressing coaching reality, it’s hard to feel too much joy over another school’s struggles to find a coach, but it is nice seeing the same thing happen to UK. Though it does make our inevitable coaching search seem like an uphill climb if even UK is struggling to land someone. Should’ve just went with Dusty.
  17. Can we have another poll where we vote on who we think the people voting yes on this poll are?
  18. Coach Cog really is as polar opposite from the last staff as you could be. Exactly what the program needed. Idk if it’ll work out because it’s still IUFB at the end of the day, but if it doesn’t work it won’t be from lack of effort.
  19. Hoosier in Texas is definitely one of them.
  20. Plus someone would only get that angry if they’re personally invested in IU’s outcomes, imo. I don’t think he’s actually on the staff but I do think there’s a strong possibility he’s attached to the staff.
  21. I’m not a big fan and frankly wish he wouldn’t have returned so we’d have another scholarship to use. Though Woody probably would’ve just left it open.
  22. This is the contract provision people are referencing. The language is pretty broad, and you’d need to look at the rest of the contract to see what the consequences would be.
  23. They’re actually contractually obligated to not think about basketball this week.
  24. It’s dead week so no basketball allowed.
  25. Leal played 18 minutes against Purdue. We lost by 20. I don’t think 2 more minutes would have made the difference. 3 players scored 58 of our 65 points against MSU. Leal scored 0 of the 65 and you want to attribute the win to Leal. Leal was a backup on a mediocre IU team that missed the tournament last season. If we want to be better than that next season we’ll need better guards. Like we had during the best season of Woodson’s tenure when Leal played 24 minutes all season. Playing Leal more isn’t the answer. He's there for locker room chemistry, leadership, and continuity.
