They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
The initial post, which I wrote, said that he was a mediocre NBA player. He averaged 14 ppg on below average efficiency for his career. Wasn’t much of a passer or a rebounder. No accolades of any kind. Won 7.7% of his playoff games as a player. And yes, I also later called him a journeyman. I stand by that. He played for six teams in eleven seasons. Stayed in one place longer than two seasons only once. And this whole conversation started in response to a post that speculated that Mike Woodson feels that he has the track record to support his arrogance based off his nba career. As I’ve said multiple times now, nothing in his nba career warrants the arrogance he’s displayed. He was a role player and then a mediocre at best coach. -

All three of his seasons have been disappointing. The first ended with a 29 point loss in the round of 64. The second ended with a 16 point loss in the round of 32. The third ended with a 27 point loss in the BTT. How will the fourth end? -

He missed the tournament with the most ‘stars’ in the conference. Pretty epic indeed. -

You’re the one bringing up Mike Woodson scoring 48 points in a game as proof of his almighty greatness. That was the only 40 point game of his nba career. You seem offended by folks thinking Woodson wasn’t a great nba player. You also repeatedly talk about “3rd highest winning percentage in the past 60 years!” as if it’s supposed to mean literally anything. Great, Mike Woodson snuck by some crappy out of conference teams. He’s 31-29 in the Big 10, which has been very mediocre during his time at IU. That’s worse than Bob Knight, worse than Mike Davis, and worse than Kelvin Sampson. It’s also worse than Tom Crean’s last seven seasons at IU, and far worse than his last six seasons. So, Mike Woodson has a better Big 10 record than Archie Miller. Better lock him up with a lifetime contract. -

The only person throwing a temper tantrum here is you. Notable future hall of famer Malachi Flynn scored 50 points in a game this season, so looks like you’re right. -

That’s fine. You don’t have to care about how he acts. Some of us do care about the way the head coach of our favorite college team behaves. Why does that bother you so much? We don’t all have to agree with you. -

My career is doing just fine, but thank you so much for your concern :) Mike Woodson played 11 seasons, not 14 seasons, and he only played 15 games his last season. Please tell us what he did during those 11 seasons to warrant the arrogance he’s displayed over the past year as IU’s coach. He was a journeyman player, he was a journeyman coach, but he walks around like he was LeBron on the court and Phil Jackson on the sideline. -

Career PER of 15.0, which is the league average. Below average career TS%, negative career BPM. 1-12 career playoff record as a player. 0 all-star teams, 0 accolades of any kind as a professional player. Was he a bad nba player? No. But this was the initial post that started the conversation: ”I think a large part of the disconnect is that Woodson feels like he does have that track record - based on his playing career and NBA coaching resume. That's why he bristles when fans or local media question him.” Mike Woodson’s nba career was unremarkable and so was his nba coaching career. Absolutely nothing in his nba career warrants the arrogance he’s displayed during his IU coaching tenure. -

His winning percentage is slightly better than the other post-Knight duds, better throw him a victory party for his one ncaa tournament win. He’s 31-29 in what has been a very mediocre Big 10. If anything, your statistic just shows that IU basketball was Bob Knight and without him we’re just another average P5 program. -

He probably does feel that way, but he was mediocre as an nba player and an nba coach too. Won 46% of his games and won three playoff rounds in nine seasons. He was there a long time, but nothing about his time in the nba was remarkable. Certainly not remarkable enough to warrant the way he acts. But you’d think he’s a HOFer with the way he acts. -

Fans don’t need to be personally affected to have opinions on the character Mike Woodson has demonstrated over the past year. -

Did people consider Bob Knight a “better person” because he won? Or did they put up with his character flaws because he won? I was 6 years old when he was fired. But yes, your head coach being a d*** is easier to stomach when he’s really good at his job. Absent a 180 personality-wise, though, I don’t envision myself becoming a true fan of Mike Woodson. -

Did Bob Knight regularly take shots at the fan base? And Mike Woodson has Bob Knight-level arrogance while delivering Tom Allen results. -

I mean, what you’re describing really isn’t arrogance. Mike Woodson acting like he’s above answering very basic interview questions or treating others within IU athletics dismissively isn’t “bulletproof self belief,” it’s just him being a d***. -

Mike Woodson’s personality/character was on full display last season. That, combined with the reports of how he treats others within IU athletics, is certainly enough to make someone not a Mike Woodson true fan. But, to each their own. -

That’s really the worst case scenario (and also the most likely scenario). He does enough to keep his job given the University’s very low standards but not enough to satisfy anyone other than his most loyal disciples. -

I want him gone after this upcoming season. If that means winning a national championship and he rides off into the sunset, great. If that means he crashes and burns his way out of the tournament field, great. Whatever result ends with Mike Woodson not being the head coach for the 2025/2026 season works for me. -

Yeah, Izzo didn’t have a good season last season. His last few seasons haven’t been very good. What’s your point? Woodson has won 1 tournament games in three seasons. The round of 32 is the best he’s done at IU. Izzo made the round of 32 last season. He made it as far in a bad season as Woodson did in his best one.. Again, what’s your point? -

Izzo won as many tournament games last season as Woodson has won in his entire college coaching career. -

I mean, it’s pretty straightforward. I don’t like the way Woodson conducts himself. I don’t like the way he approaches the job/the effort he puts into the job. He doesn’t have the personality I want in an IU coach. -

That’d be like the tournament getting canceled in 2023 and saying Woodson only made 1 tournament. IU was a lock for the tournament in 2020. Archie also didn’t have millions of dollars to use to spend on immediately eligible transfers. Ware is the only reason last year wasn’t every bit as bad as (or worse than) any of Archie’s IU seasons. Woodson has massive advantages no other IU coach For the sake of argument let’s say he’s better than Archie. That’s it. Mike Davis’s last season was marginally worse than Woodson’s best season. He got fired for it back when IU had standards. Woodson got a million dollar raise for it. -

Yeah, he can do a 180 with his personality and start treating other people with respect/start putting effort into his job. That’d go a long way. Until then, I don’t really care what he does on the court. -

He’s the worst, imho. He’s the only one who has the benefit of NIL + the transfer portal and it’s gotten him 1 tournament win in three years. -
I’m not sold on McCarthy at all and think Penix is a better prospect, but agree that he made more sense given Atlanta has their qb for the next 3-4 years already. By the time Cousins is gone, McCarthy will be around the age Penix already is right now.
