General Coach Candidate News

I just want a coach who will make me not sad that we didn’t hire Beard. -

Probably. But we also would’ve been better off if IU had taken the UNC approach to NCAA allegations. Program just can’t get out of its own way, both then and now. -

Every coach comes with risks, even Brad Stevens. Beard’s risks are entirely off the court. There’s no question he’d come here and win a lot of games. Just depends on which risks you’re willing to take, I suppose. -

18-6 at this point… But hey, Scott was just a powerless stooge when Mike Woodson was hired, had his salary raised, was retained for a fourth season, and then was kept for the rest of the fourth season. Don’t worry, though, he totally has all the power now and will make a great hire. -

Based on what? They’ve been putting on a masterclass in incompetence when it comes to the basketball program. -

Cronin/Williams are, imo, the level of coach we’ll likely end up with. Underwhelming but still quality coaches who could have success here. Not home runs, but not the “swing at a hit pitch” that Mike Woodson was. -

Not this again… The new coach will get as much of a chance as he earns. Woodson fell on his face in year three and then attacked the fanbase. It was a wrap after that. -

I’d be happy with him and I think he’d do very well. I’m just kinda tired of hearing about him at this point. He keeps rejecting us for the prom and we keep showing up with a bigger bouquet begging him to change his mind. I’m ready to find the guy who makes us forget about Brad Stevens. -

Yeah at that point your roster is set. I think I might be moving May ahead of Brad on my wish list, though. I just don’t like the way we have to beg and plead with him to take the job. I want someone who wants the job. I don’t think that’s Brad. If it was, he’s had plenty of chances to take it. He not only didn’t take this job, he also left the coaching job he did have for a front office role. Give me a grinder and let’s roll. -

Stevens, Pearl, Few, May, Beard. The Texas Tech and Iowa state guys too probably. Maybe Cronin. Could be other guys I’m just not thinking of. With the portal and NIL I think an above average coach gets us solidly in the tournament in year 1 and rolling in year 2. They won’t have to have a title contender in year 2, but a couple years of under .500 conference ball to start just won’t cut it. That’s possible even if you don’t “win the press conference.” No one was blown away by Louisville‘s hire last year and they’re sitting at 18-6 and 2nd in the ACC. There are just too many recent examples of very rapid turnarounds for the fanbase to patiently wait through yet another slow rebuild. -

IU needs to win the press conference with whoever they hire. The fanbase is about as pissed off/on edge as a fanbase can get after the past 9 seasons during which we’ve won a whopping 1 tournament game. Trot out some middling guy and the temperature will still be scalding hot. Whoever comes in isn’t going to get 2-3 seasons to “figure things out.” They will need to win immediately. -

Mike Woodson is a 66 year old man. He doesn’t need to be coddled with kids gloves. If he’s that sensitive then IU should’ve “retired” him effective immediately. Retiring him mid season because he’s terrible at coaching but then letting him finish out the season is just silly. Rip the bandaid off instead of tiptoeing around big foot’s feelings for the next month. -
They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Idk.. Woodson had the biggest NIL budget in the conference, took that $6 million, and has us tied for 12th in the conference. He’s giving Archie a run for his money. -
They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Eh I wouldn’t really say that. Archie’s third season was 20-12 and 9-11 in conference to Woodson’s 21-14 and 9-11 in conference his first year. IU was in the tournament but it got canceled because of COVID. 3of the top 5 guys minutes wise in Woodson’s first year never played a minute for Archie, and 6 of the top 9 in Woodson’s second year never did. You’re also comparing a freshman/sophomore TJD for Archie to a junior/senior one for Woodson. Archie didn’t have the benefit of the transfer portal and NIL either that Woodson did, which I fully believe is the only reason Woodson hasn’t been at the very bottom of the conference, and he’s delivered marginally better results than Archie did. He can’t recruit and just throws his friends’ money at players and still can’t make the tournament. -

Mike Woodson is a worse coach than Archie Miller. I fully believe that. -

Yeah same. I understand the “I don’t care what it looks like as long as we win,” but after the Woodson and Miller eras I want to watch enjoyable basketball again. Peach basket era basketball isn’t for me. -

The year Dusty is having at Michigan is better than any season IU has had since the 2015/2016 championship team, and that’s after taking over a team that finished last in the conference by three games last year. The worries I had about him last offseason are gone. -

Hoosierfan2017 replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I’d love to land Beard. If we don’t land Beard but land some other top coach, I’d love that too. But if we, knowing Beard would take the job, end up hiring a Ben McCollum or some other either unproven or unremarkable guy, that’ll be a huge gut punch. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what I’m expecting given this administration’s track record. -

Stevens, May, and Beard are my top 3. Get one of them and I’ll be happy. Once we dip away from those three I’ll get concerned. -

Dusty’s got Michigan at 17-5 and third in the conference after UM went 8-24 and finished dead last the previous year. I was skeptical of his FAU success translating but he’d be a real solid hire.
