General Coach Candidate News
Hoosierfan2017 replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Because we have 20+ years of data on Cronin while McCollum has less than a year of D1 experience under his belt. Maybe he’s becomes a great coach, but why take that risk if Cronin is on the table? At the very least Cronin gets us to the tournament each year which would be a big step in getting IU out of laughingstock territory. -

Crean got fired because his lows were too low, not because his highs weren’t high enough. Cronin’s floor basically the past 15 years has been the NCAA tournament. We can’t talk about winning more banners until we’re a consistent tournament team. We’ve been there twice in the last nine years… We’re just not at all in a position as a fanbase to turn our nose at someone with Cronin’s resume. -

What? Cronin has won 69% of his conference games since joining UCLA. Finished 2nd, 4th, 2nd 1st, and 5th in the PAC 12. He’s made the sweet 16 three of the last four years. He hasn’t had a conference record under .500 since 2010. Even if you remove Crean’s first 3 seasons in their entirety, he won 58% of his conference games at IU. He missed the tournament twice in his last four years and went 20-14 and lost in the first round another year. I feel like people are talking about a completely different person when they talk about Cronin… Maybe he’s a curmudgeon, but his resume stacks up with any other candidate out there. -

Compare who to Crean? Cronin? Cronin’s resume since 2010 blows Crean’s IU tenure out of the water. -

IU took one look at that title game appearance and said absolutely not. -

Brownell started at Clemson in 2010. He’s made the tournament 4 times. This year will be 5. During those same 15 years, Cronin has made the tournament 12 times. This year will be 13. He would’ve made it the Covid season, so 14 times in 15 years. If you don’t want to include the Covid year, he’s at 13 times in 14 years. I don’t understand the Cronin discourse. Sure I’d love to love the new coach’s personality after four years of Woodson, but making the tournament every year would get me over it. -

Brownell screams “IU hire,” so I’m not surprised in the slightest. I think IU can’t disappoint more than it already has, but IU always finds a way. -

I think I’d hate a Collins hire less than I’d hate some of these other hires. He’s done a respectable job at a school with literally zero basketball history. Had never made the NCAA tournament before Collins got there. I think a lot of “imagine what he could do with our resources” responses are copium with some of these candidates, but I think it actually fits with Collins. He’s a good coach. Northwestern plays in a high school gym and has a 7.2% acceptances rate. IU is in a different universe when it comes to recruiting opportunities. -

If Brad Brownell is the option between two guys I’m taking the other guy without even knowing who he is lol. -

I won’t turn this into a duffel bag conversation given that it doesn’t really matter anymore with NIL, but we see what all the goody two shoes moral preening got IU over the past twenty years or so. Rules that were never enforced might as well not have even been rules. Winners get celebrated by the NCAA, even when we all knew why they won. -

The people who don’t want to hire a guy like Bruce Pearl because of his ncaa “infractions” annoy me. That’s just trying compete in college basketball. There’s some overlap within that group with the don’t hire Beard crowd, but I don’t think it’s sanctimonious not to want to hire him. It’s totally reasonable not to want him as the coach. I’m just so sick of IU being such a gutter program that I’d definitely take him. -

Eh not really. This day his first year IU was 16-10 and had lost 5 straight. His first year was real mid. -

The reasons he didn’t “get it done at his Alma mater” had nothing to do with the on court results. He won as many tournament games his first season as IU has in the last 9. His second year he was 7-1 with wins over the #2 and #7 teams before he got fired. -

We’re in an appealing situation definitely, but the top two candidates being off the board before the end of February is discouraging. It’s like recruiting. No one recruit will make or break you. There are still some good options out there. Just have to land one. -

He’s not right lol. Without reading qanon tea leaves, the reality is Dolson has struck out on his top two options. The bright side is we won’t be hiring a coach for at least another month, so we aren’t in scramble mode yet. But this idea that Dolson has some master plan that he’s executing is obviously a load of nonsense. -

A lot of folks have the “we can’t do worse than Woodson” mentality right now. That’s the same mentality we had after firing little Archie and look where it got us. On the bright side, this hire will be a confirmation hire. Hire yet another dud and it’s the final confirmation for the fanbase that the administration doesn’t give two craps about men’s basketball. -

Just hire Beard and get this show on the road. He’d probably leave Oxford and be in Bloomington by sunrise. (Drunk, possibly, but he’d probably still coach the team better Sunday than Woodson will). -

But the administration will be able to feel good about themselves and that’s all that matters. Can’t hire Drew either because he’s too religious, whatever that’s supposed to mean. We’ll likely find another coach from the bargain bin, be gaslit for not being happy with the hire, and then watch yet another flameout. This time will be especially awful knowing that a great coach as begging for the job.
