Another in a long line of well officiated B1G games. Jesus -

What Ivey is doing is why I wanted Aminu Mohammed so badly despite all the wings on this roster. A guy who can just beat good D and get themselves a good look. It’s brutal watching this team trying to create looks. -

It’s every game, every year. It’s a fundamental they clearly don’t practice. -

Gee, another blatantly obvious illegal screen. -

Durham was way too wide on Geronimo’s screen. Gave Ivey all the room in the world to get over it. Of all the little micro-coaching things that Miller just hasn’t done well, the screen game is just about the worst. The bigs set lazy screens and the guards don’t time them up. -
Wow. That one had not even occurred to me. His roster profile couldn’t look less like this IU team. He recruits pretty much nothing but long run/jump athletes. Gonna need to chew on this one a little bit.

Sorry, but if they can go anywhere in Bloomington to eat and they end up at Applebee’s or O’Charley’s, I don’t want them picking the Coach. That be some suspect decision-making right there.
-
Believe me, I ain’t defending him. That the former college PG couldn’t fix his facilitator role should absolutely sink him. Just pointing out that a seemingly low ceiling recruitment that wasn’t given a bunch of thought could have saved the guy for a minute.
-
Sure they do. But the point that USPS was making was that a Coach like Nate Öats can look at the B1G product and decide there are better fits for their philosophy of play. Of course he’s right. And that doesn’t make them bad coaches or questionable competitors. It just means they don’t want to coach in the UFC.

Nova gives Marcus Zegarowski a perfectly clean look at a 3, which he misses because he’s having a tough night. Gus Johnson then compliments Nova’s ability to get “timely stops.” Jesus

Unfortunately, I agree. B1G basketball forces most more skill-based coaches to change. Underwood was the ultimate spread guy when he got the Illinois gig. He would never have recruited a kid like Cockburn. He had no fit in that structure. But after watching his offense get thoroughly disrupted by B1G physicality, he went out and brought in a hammer. Completely changed what he’d always coached. Same on D. Pitino did the same thing, just unsuccessfully. The 1 really successful exception is probably Beilein. And it’s just continuing to get worse.

Was just thinking about 1 of those butterfly effect sorts of things: Miller not having the space available to have the option take McKinley Wright 4 years ago, a loss no one cared about at all at the time, is about to cost him his job. And it absolutely is. Wright’s a terrific college PG. tough kid, leader, takes and makes big shots. He would have been such an upgrade over Phinisee over the last 3 years that I’m completely confident that, while he may well still be viewed as a disappointment at this point, the program would have had enough additional success that Miller wouldn’t be going anywhere. That’s how fine the line is. Just something I was thinking about.

(2022) - SG C. J. Gunn to DePaul

That’s a 1st round sectional game? God I miss Indy this time of year. -
You’re probably right about UNC, which would probably preclude him under any circumstances. But, if you get a chance during tourney season, watch UNCG play. They really defend, and Miller game plans more broadly than any college coach I can think of. They play man, multiple zones, they play 3/4 traps as well as full court. And they play them all well. They’re constantly changing up and they get teams playing deep into the clock and running bad stuff as a result. And he runs a lot of subtle actions that create a ton of clean looks. I am absolutely a fan. He’s a Dude and he’s gonna be big time somewhere.
-
Almost certainly true. DM’d with Mike DeCourcy, and if you follow him on Twitter he’s a good dude and great about answering DM’s, when the Wake Forest job opened up and asked why they wouldn’t just hire Miller. His response was that he was looking bigger.
-
Absolutely yes to Wes Miller.

My favorite Coach in CBB. He gets more done with less than anyone in the country. His games are must see tv if you’re in to coaching. But I do not believe he would have the slightest interest in a fishbowl like IU and I do not believe he would thrive there.

Game Thread: Indiana vs Michigan State (8PM EST BTN)
Demo replied to Trish's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
There it was, right there. Lander has the ball 2 on 2 in the open court. Every guard ever born takes that ball right at Watts. Lander pulls it out. That HAS to be coached. You wanna know why this team doesn’t push the ball? Because Archie doesn’t want to. -
Couldn’t quit it if I tried. Been in love with IU basketball since I was 10. I think I cared more about IU than I did about the school I was playing, or rather sitting, for. It’s in my DNA and I’ll continue to break down every game like I have forever. But I completely get the notion of walking away from it. No judgements. And how long will this thread be? Hell, every poster may need their own individual thread.

That would be a good call. Thought that might be the job for Kyle Neptune, Jay Wright’s top guy. But Shrewsberry would certainly make sense.
-
That y’all could debate which legitimately interesting FOOTBALL game to attend really does speak to the rabbit hole IU sports has gone down. Just can’t stop shaking my head over this being the state of things.
-
Yeah, I love Beilein. The man’s as good as it gets. But if you’re hiring him, you’re doing so with a succession plan already in place. So let’s just get this out of the way right now: John Beilein plus Jordan Hulls. Tell me Hulls after sitting next to Beilein for 5 years wouldn’t be ready to roll.
-
Love watching Utah St play. Great pace and movement without recklessness. So cohesive. Sone power conference AD that hooks up Craig Smith is gonna look like a genius. Love that guy.
-
If you want Cronin, you’re a hiring cycle late. He’s laid the groundwork for that program to really take off. Leaving now would be pretty nuts.
-
Yes he would. Terrific coach. I’m curious if he would have been willing to actually pull the trigger with Michigan had that offer come. The dude makes a couple of mil a year coaching in his hometown and for a school at which he is beloved and where the expectations are....manageable. He might well be willing to leave, but it might be tough.
