Kinda saved a PR disaster with this hire but it definitely wasn’t what their intentions began with. It’s a TBD but can easily see a path to be excited about it.

2026-27 Roster/Portal/how to fix the roster?
WayneFleekHoosier replied to Asha’man's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Following that math, we retain 4 plus freshman. Thats 1 or 2 more than I would have expected. Very curious to see who those pieces end up being. -
Sadler was always the engine on this team. Karvala played his role. Not his best game today. He’s an interesting prospect. I could see him being really good at some point, but at a school trying to compete at the level of Indiana, it might take a while. His teammmates overlook him a lot of times. His stats are sometimes underwhelming but I think that’s because Sadler does so much. My guess is he would follow the traditional route of it being a slower 2-3 year phase into action. Strength and bulk being a factor in that as well.

Get on a committee Stu. I like this.

2026-27 Roster/Portal/how to fix the roster?

Nothing that has happened in the past year gives me any bravado or confidence about where we are headed besides the fact I know Dolson WANTS to win. That’s all. DeVries has actually taken me the other direction. He wasn’t a savant but he also didn’t do much coaching malpractice. He seems like an adequate coach. I want it to work for him because I like his style and him as a person. Looking forward to see what we’ve learned and what we can pull off in the portal. We’ve virtually put ourselves in a near full rebuild. -

Dusty has been heavily accused of tampering and tampering early and often. Seems to be disliked by a lot of B1G coaches. Morez Johnson was highly regarded. Not sure what that’s all about. Trey McKinney is a 5 star and I think his payment is underestimated. I also think the returners were underestimated. it’s whatever in the end. He built one of the best rosters in the B1G in a long time. And he did it for 9-13 million. We need his negotiation tactics as much as we need anything. -
It’s a money grab, but I don’t hate it like most people. I think over time it’ll add a bit on intrigue.

So disappointing. I guess from a staff that settled on Bailey and Alexis as our only bigs I shouldn’t be surprised. And we had to sign an assistant and pay a hefty bag to get priority. Can’t we at least call P. Payne and beg and plead before we settle. Or Malachi Moreno. Or the Stud from Cincinnati, or, or, or. Or wait. Tamper. Do something. It also means he’s our high priced big which means he’ll be our best front court guy. Assuming it’s him. But man, it sure does feel that way. -

If we are spending 2.5 on him the back up will be chopped cheese. lol. Now I’m just joking around, but really. -

Was our “commit” that Lettice “leaked” Fru? He fits all the criteria. Power 5 big that would be projected to make an impact. Some thought Kwame Evans at first. But Fru makes much more sense and saddens me a bit. I guess I’ll have to get over that I don’t love our starting 5 right out of the gate. Im going to hold onto hope until the hope is completely gone though. -

It’s all part of it. For one, with advanced metrics it’s becoming more predictable and accurate. If Indiana builds a strong roster it’s good on multiple fronts. We’ve had this discussion before. Program momentum and swagger is a real thing and will impact recruiting to an extent. Also fan involvement. The more casual fan. This year very few fans bought in. Wasn’t much belief or confidence. Wait and see approach led to lackluster crowds and ultimately a lackluster season with very few high points. so do I care? Yes, being in that conversation of teams that have a shot and have some respect helps on and off the court and is good for the program. Plus the accuracy is much improved so, it means a little more. The counter is always Woody’s year with offseason hype. True we ended up equal to what we had this year. But at least there was some hope for the fans for a short while (most knew already Woodson would blow it). It ultimately came down to terrible misses on projections for Rice and Carlyle and Galloway not becoming the shooter we needed. That team with a better coach would have made an impact. Woodson sunk the ship. But that season can’t be fairly the reason to never want a highly touted team again. The reality is you want a highly touted season every year. Odds and odds and stacking talent will pay off before trying to build some unheralded masterpiece. -
Oh, so thankful they didn’t pull this one off. I was wrong and others were right on his press conference motivations. now it gets interesting. And less depressing.

You really think DeVries is capable of that based on what you’ve seen from him? He needs talent, just like most coaches. Doesn’t have to be blockbuster names but generally the best players generate names for themselves. -

Yes, sure. But it’s not a yes or no. It’s a scale. And it’s somewhat measurable via analytics. Everyone will wait and see how it performs. But the rest of the college basketball world and the fans will analyze the roster put together and project how good or bad it is. -

Those numbers outside of Yaxel don’t add up to me. But I get it. Indiana at 10’ Michigan at 12-13. Or whatever, either way, rosters need to be closer. -

Your gut fears will be proven to be true. We might be nearing a crescendo but we aren’t quite there yet. -

Old numbers. 12 million would have put us top 5 a year ago. Indiana always a year behind. We will find out in the portal and be shocked because all these other schools have so much money. Then we will wonder how our top 10 spent roster isn’t has good as others. It’s because the numbers are not public. Michigan absolutey outspent us last year. But the media puts them at 8-9 and us at 10. I don’t buy that for a second. 8 or 9’before Yaxel? Maybe. -

Purdue players don’t transfer but I do like Jacobsen quite a bit. I’ll go on record there. He isn’t Edey. But he can be really good. The injury set him back a little. But if we had 3 bigs I’d be happy for him to be in the rotation. -

I don’t have a schtick. Yes, I think Indiana has put itself in a position that we need to overpay. Sadly, but surely. But ultimately it’s to have enough money to get the talent you identify and win the battles for the guys you want. Identify a guy, then have the resources to get that guy. Thats the dream scenario. I also know you can’t have the #1 guy at every position. But you need guys that man for man can compete at that type of level at each position. I also think Indiana needs some off season juice. For the fans, for the recruits, for the media, for the basketball world. Gonna have to spend to create that because we didn’t do it organically like Michigan last year, Iowa this year, etc -

Sadly agree. I don’t see this one happening. I’d love to watch him in Candy Stripes. He’s seems to be a money driven dude, but he plays hard. I absolutely don’t forecast him as a Hoosier, with this staff. With Woody? No brainer, lol. -

Unless you watched the games. Thats my point. Team success isn’t the factor. Timeshares aren’t always the factor. It’s like when Edey was playing behind Williams, you could see it. The guy was incredible. But he was in a timeshare. Coaches sometimes have tough decisions and don’t always do the best things. It’s like At Purdue. You have to play Williams but it was easily arguable that Edey was Better. Had he transferred people would have been like, why didn’t Painter play him more? He was stuck. Find talent, play talent. -

Maybe but he made that team USA roster, so it wasn’t only Dusty and I that saw the vision.
