Wasn’t a great game, especially the first half, but I really liked how the team competed overall. Phinisee proved how important he is to this team, and we need him healthy. Needs to read his passes a little better, but that will come with more time after his injury. Really liked the play of TJD and Race again today. Jerome played well, and you know once he gets himself settled in he will elevate this team higher. While it was against a lesser opponent, it was good to see DeRon play more efficiently in the 2nd half. If he can continue to be more of that DeRon, I can see him taking Brunk’s starting spot. Smith didn’t have the greatest game, but like with everyone, they competed and played hard for most of the game, which is huge for this team, especially Smith. I didn’t expect Portland State to be as good as they were, and while IU didn’t play great, it was a fun back and forth battle. Al and Justin continue to play very good basketball, and it was good to see TJD, Hunter, and Thompson be very good as well. Once that first 3 went down for Hunter, man you could tell that was a huge weight lifted off him and he gained a ton of confidence after that. I continue to be underwhelmed by our true centers, but hope they are just getting their feet wet and will pick it up, same with Rob. We are playing good basketball and have a rusty point guard and missing our best shooter/scorer, so a lot still to gain! Heck of a game and hats off to PSU, they have a good team! To be honest, you can easily take it either way. A visit to Marquette could be a confirmation about either school. All reports are that he loved his visit, but you never know how close he is or is not to the Marquette staff and team. Marquette can sell him on being the focal point in a more high energy offense. A lot of pros to either side, but of course I’m biased and see way more positives with choosing IU :) I think getting Garcia to go with Rob, Al, TJD and company would be a top 15 team IMO.
