8/5/2015 3:59:00 PM  | Sudfeld Adds Two More Accolades Senior QB honored by Unitas Award and Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld is on the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award® and is a candidate for the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. Earlier this summer, Sudfeld earned spots on the Maxwell Award and the Wuerffel Trophy Watch Lists.

Sudfeld, a player speaker at the 2015 Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon, went on a week-long service trip to Uganda during 2015 spring break. He traveled there with his family to visit construction on an orphanage representing Assist International, the humanitarian group that his grandparents founded in 1990. Sudfeld has also volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club, the Andrew Luck/IU Health Change The Play Program and Read Across America.

The Modesto, Calif., native ranks second in program history in completion percentage (60.6), tied for second in 300-yard passing games (four), fifth in passing touchdowns (34), eighth in passing yardage (4,306) and completions (346), ninth in attempts (571) and 10th in total offense (4,377) in just 25 career games (14 starts).

Sudfeld passed for 1,151 yards on 101-of-167 (60.5 percent) with six TDs, three picks and a 126.6 pass efficiency rating before he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the second quarter of game six at Iowa last season.

Named after one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and established in 1987, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award is presented annually at the end of each season to the nation's top college quarterback based on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class.

Transamerica, the presenting sponsor of this award, is proud once again to honor the tremendous legacy of Johnny Unitas® and salute a new generation of outstanding student athletes. In addition to recognizing great accomplishments on the field, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award® considers character, citizenship, integrity, leadership and honor all characteristics that are highly valued by Transamerica®.

For over a century, Transamerica has been helping people prepare a better financial future as a leading provider of solutions for insurance investments and retirement. Creating a better tomorrow comes from hard work, discipline and commitment to a solid plan. Transamerica salutes these outstanding young men on the Top 30 watch list and will cheer them on and wish them great success as they take the field this fall.  These strong leaders have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and worked hard to "Transform Tomorrow" for themselves and their teams during the season and beyond.

For 24 years, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has recognized college football players from across the country who exemplifies a superior commitment to community service and volunteerism.

Since its inception in 1992, the award highlights the "good" taking place off the football field. The select group of student-athletes nominated for this award by their respective colleges and universities are able to balance academics and athletics while remaining committed to helping others and bettering their communities.

While remarkable on the field performances are praised each weekend, these individuals' off the field accomplishments far exceed touchdowns and tackles. From traveling overseas to support third-world countries to raising thousands of dollars for kidney cancer research, these remarkable student-athletes have utilized their minimal free time in an impactful way, earning them national recognition.

Comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA, the final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September. From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will select the 2015 Good Works Team.®
