Have to disagree.  The Belmont is one of the biggest races of the season, no matter if there is a possible triple crown winner possibility.

There is a reason why it does not happen every year.  Clearly Nyquist was not up to the task.  This does not mean that he is not the best 3YO.  If there was a TC winner every year or every few years or it was more common, it would lose its appeal and prestige.  It is not a drought, but rather a lack of a worthy champion.

When the first quarter was 22 and 1, I told my wife it's over. He was lucky to run third. Nyquist never settled. And the mud? Not excuses,they all had to deal with it. He ran way to fast in the first quarter.

Although the hype of the triple crown has been shelved until next year, from a bettors perspective a wide open Belmont presents a much greater opportunity to make money, there will probably not be a clear favorite, thus more value for the bettors.
