I believe it says something in the rules that you can't scout a walk-on but they don't really enforce it.  Drummond from UCONN was heavily scouted and ended up paying his own way.  I would assume if a scholarship player has said they would come off scholarship and pay their own way it would be okay.

There have been lots of cases of scholarship athletes giving up their scholarship, and continuing to play.  That is not ever an issue.  The issue would only come into play if they are given an "academic" scholarship as part of IU's  scholarship guarantee.  There is no way the NCAA would allow them to be part of the team.  Heck, Michigan had to jump through hoops to keep Hatch as a student assistant coach.

I'd be curious to see how the NCAA reacts to that. Does anyone know if there's a legitimate process for converting an athletic scholarship to another type (academic, etc)?

I'm not trying to be negative, I am really curious about the reaction from Indy.

I am pretty sure the player can leave the program and stay at the school under another scholarship. They can't play, and I assume practice with the team.

Isn't that exactly what Austin Hatch is doing a U of MI?

The way it is working is that he is still on an athletic scholarship, it just won't count towards their scholarship limit. Part of Austin's troubles is that UM still wants him as part of the BB program.  He just won't be playing.
