Roster Spots

As excited as I am for the upcoming BigTen season I still can't shake one thing out of my head.... Where in the world are we going to put all these guys next year? We have 3 Seniors, Victor and Cody could very well go, but then what? Who leaves? Could a healthy Austin decide to go play with his brother at K State? Food for thought, now discuss.

I have a feeling this is going to be a common feeling for all of us. I think with every made 3 pointer, Victor Oladipo is planting himself as an NBA lock for next year. His biggest concern was his outside shot, and he seems to be knocking those down with ease now.

Cody will be interesting. I think a lot of people are disappointed in Cody since he was nominated for POY, but I'm not sure that is entirely fair. One of the main reasons he was Preseason POY is due to his outstanding post season last year coupled with Indiana being the Preseason #1. He played too well last year for a HUGE improvement this year.

I just hope we don't have any Ron Patterson type moments again. Say whatever you want, it's not good publicity for our Hoosiers.

I agree with your assessment of Victor. Between his improved outside shot and complete turnaround as a ball handler he's just padding his NBA résumé. Did anyone else cringe the last two years when he took off at 100mph on the dribble? I know I did, but no longer. Cody has shown improvement but I think it's harder to see with the added weapons around him. He's obviously stronger, which is good because, anytime he touches the ball he commands a double team. I honestly feel he's a smarter player this year as well. Like you said though, to a guy with such a huge skill set already, the improvement to the public eye isn't going to be easily visible. Do I think he's worthy of POY? Sure, but I'm biased. Regardless of how it shakes out in the end these guys are students first and athletes second. I don't mind the headache of trying to find roster spots for them as long as their grades don't do the job for us.

Also remember, Mo is in the same situation that Matt Roth was in, where he has one more year of eligibility, but due to his lack of usage as of late, I don't see him returning unfortunately. Now I might be wrong and he may get stronger as the season goes on and he sees more minutes, but as of now and with his lack of playing time, I don't see him back in candy stripes next year

I dont think Mo will make it back to "true" game condition. I feel like we are going to lose Vic, Mo, Cody. So we lose those 3 plus our seniors of Jordy, Wat, and Elston.

Makes space for the 6 coming in next year. I hate to say it, but next year's roster looks deeper than this year's. The only spot I question is PG depth.

I think Luke will be a Cody clone, and Peter will have a season to get better. Vonleh is a stud and will take Cwat's minutes, Troy is a Vic clone.

Only thing we are going to truly miss is Jordy's 3 ball range. And I hope that Remy can turn that on.

I don't see too much problem at PG depth. Yogi will be the main ball handler, with an experienced Remy backing him up. I also think Robinson could morph into an EJ type combo guard. As far as deep shooting goes, Will can stroke it, along with Remy, Stan, Yogi, and Noah. Hartman and Davis are nothing to laugh at either. Will we be as dominant from beyond the arc, maybe not, but I think we will be just fine.

Vic and Cody both need at least one more year in College. Victor is great at this level but he is that in-between player. Not consistent enough to be a SG and not sound enough with his handles to be a true PG.

Cody is playing SOFT, he needs to step it up a lot in B1G season. If he continues to play this way he'll get handled in conference play and that would be even worse at the next level. He needs to show more of a killer instinct. The move against Iowa when he got the ball on the block and done his classic right shoulder skip/hop move needs to be more existent in his game. Maybe this would all change if the guards looked to get him the ball more on the block. But to me he needs to progress even further to prove he is capable of leaving early for the next level. Look at Miles Plumlee with the Pacers, he was just sent to Ft. Wayne. Cody needs more time to develop into an NBA player.

Austin I think could leave but who knows where as his brother has decommited from KSU. Could they both end up at a Mid-Major? Maybe close to home like Ball State?

As for the loss of outside shooting everyone needs to remember the name Johnny Marlin. The boy can straight stroke it. I watched him beat Jordy at the long shot contest during Hoosier Hysteria. He's been practicing with the team all season. Once his mandatory sit out due to transfer is over I think we're in for a surprising treat.

Interesting.  I had heard he is a great shooter, but I didn't think he would see any game time.  What type of player is he?  Spot up shooter?  How many minutes would you expect he could get?

I've always worried about us over signing on players. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think we were over signed up until Patterson was no longer with us due to academics. If we do over sign I feel like it can give IU a bad reputation and potential players may be hesitant to sign with IU

This can become a problem, but it's a much better one to have than not having any recruits at all. For now, I'll see it as a blessing until something turns south

Smart Coaches need to oversign by at least one.  When you combine today's athletes with their families, the instant news cycle, and the academic standards that we as IU grads want to uphold; things just happen.

I haven't done much in depth digging on Marlin but from what he can tell he's a spot up shooter with decent athleticism. He looked good at Hoosier Hysteria, he can knock it down from deep. As for minutes per game he's going to have a fight on his hands just like everyone else. The way I've heard some of the players talk during interviews he's got talent but he'll still be a bench/role player. I hope he gets the opportunity to play early on to see what he can do in game situations.

My problem with victor is, He will see his draft stock this year and see what happened to watford, who could have been a late 1st rounder now he is hardly ever listed on big boards. Victor will go pro, hope im wrong, hard to lose the energy he has and hard to replace him

Pretty sure Victor will be gone this year.  Always sell when your stock is highest.  If he goes, that means GREAT things for Indiana as Coach Crean turned a 3 star recruit into a NBA player in 3 years.  Huge recruiting advantage.

I wouldn't say Vic is ready to go just yet. Watford had a breakout year last year, but has always been inconsistent when it comes to "giving effort". Vic knows he has a high motor, and so do the scouts. So I think that if Indiana wins a title, sure, Vic may leave, but if they don't, I see him coming back to try and make that happen, because his motor will still be there even if his numbers drop.

Plus, the only reason Christian isn't on the board anymore is because of the team we have now. We needed him to score in the past for us to even have a chance at winning games, whereas now, anyone can score at any time for us

If we win this year I have no doubt that Vic and Zeller leave. Why would they stay? They're both going to be high picks, assuming Vic keeps this season going. I wouldn't take the chance if I were them of potentially being hurt and risking their draft stock. Even if we don't win this year I won't be surprised if Zeller leaves. Everyone's argument for that is Zeller's brothers both stayed all 4 years but Zeller came to IU with 22 credits and was essentially a 2 1/2 year student last year. Not to mention he is already better than both his brothers. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I agree about the money but getting the million dollar contract instead of risking a big injury (especially in a rough conference as the Big10) after already winning a national championship doesn't make sense to me. In my opinion one National Championship is enough and the ultimate goal as a collegiate player and multiple National Championships are not the same as multiple NBA championships
