The bolded statement is just a flat out lie. Year 3 UConn lost in round 1 as a 7 seed to 10th seeded Maryland and in year 4 UConn lost as a 5 seed to 12th seeded New Mexico State. He had zero tournament wins at UConn prior to winning back to back national titles, in fact he came into year 5 with a very warm seat.
-
So being an assistant coach at Hofstra, Valpo, and freaking Army trumps being a head coach for a decade at the highest level of basketball!?! lol. Don’t hurt yourself too bad doing those mental gymnastics. Good lord.
-
-Jay Wright missed the tournament his first 3 years -So did Mike Krzyzewski -Scott Drew didn’t win his first tournament game until year 7 -Tony Bennett missed the tournament 3 out of his first 4 years and didn’t win his first tournament game until year 5 What else you need?
-
The current best coach in college basketball, Dan Hurley, would have been fired based on this boards criteria for retention well before winning his first title. Through 4 years at UConn, Hurley had: -two missed tournaments -zero tournament wins -both tournament losses to lower seeded teams -highest conference finish of 3rd place Jay Wright wouldn’t have made it here. Nor Scott Drew. Or Tony Bennet. Coach K would have been fired long before he ever saw national success. You need more or do you get my gist?

Agree wholeheartedly, but 5-6 years to gauge a coach is entirely different than 3 years. I’d wager substantially his 4th season is better than any of his previous 3 seasons despite being written off by a large portion of this board. He’s 66 not 96, plenty of time left to leave a big impact on the program even if he’s only here another 3-4 seasons.

They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
AH1971 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
lol what? There’s 1154 pages and over 23k posts of the same regurgitated opinion. Not one person has stopped you from saying the same thing over and over again. -
I can give you countless examples of either HoF or future HoF coaches who had similar or lesser resumes after 3-4 seasons than some of those listed above.
-
So if you don’t win a title by year 3 there’s no hope? Rinse, wash, repeat? Is that what you’re telling me? GTFOH
-
I've already acknowledged Northwestern was the 2 seed via tiebreaker in the BTT, however, that doesn't negate the fact that both teams still finished T-2nd in the final regular season standings. Only an ignorant person would continue to argue that Indiana finished in 3rd place. It's like saying two teams that finished 17-1 aren't co-champs because one team was the 1 seed and the other team was the 2 seed. I will assure you that IU still recognizes it's 2002 B10 regular season championship despite being the 4th seed in the BTT that year via tiebreaker.
-
I'm not arguing that Indiana wasn't the 3rd seed in the BTT, they still finished tied for 2nd in the conference in the regular season, not 3rd. That's not how standings work, you're showing your ignorance.
-
I'm not spinning anything lol, you're the one who said IU technically finished 3rd when they literally finished T-2nd.
-
Mark Pope has yet to win a game in the NCAA tournament
-
Because you can't have two #2 seeds, seriously? If two teams are tied for first both are considered champs even though one gets the the 1 seed and the other the 2 seed. Don't be dense.
-
Cal left because of the irrational fan base who cut off his NIL supply making it impossible in this climate of college basketball. And because of that ended up with Mark Pope.
-
They weren't technically 3rd, they finished T-2nd with Northwestern. They had multiple starters out for a majority of the conference slate.
-
He just finished second two years ago despite being down two starters for the majority of the conference slate, sweeping the champs in the process. This years roster is 10x more complete than that.
-
The University of Kentucky, the most storied college basketball program in the history of the sport, just ended up with their 5th or 6th candidate after publicly being turned down multiple times because of an irrational fan base who ran off the last coach. If you think Indiana is somehow going to land a cream of the crop coach after running Woodson off in 3 years then there's zero reason to have this discussion.
-
Firing an alum who went to tournaments in 2/3 years after not making one since 2016 is surely the right way to attract a top of the line candidate down the road. I'm sure you knew that though.
-
I'm saying no program who is constantly shuffling coaches every 4-5 seasons over an extended period of time is going to have any kind of sustained success.

They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
AH1971 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Going to be a long season for you brother. Deep breaths. -
Miller got 4 seasons and if it were up to the large majority of this board, Woodson would have been gone after this past season. IU's had five different coaches this century, running a coach off at a rate of just under 5 seasons isn't a recipe for success. No way to ever find continuity when you're constantly turning over.
-
Or...and hear me out....you don't fire a coach every 2-3 seasons and actually let him try and build something. Novel concept I know.
-
Will know in a few years. May isn’t going to get 5-6 years though like he did it FAU. Not in this climate.

IUBB Recruit Rankings
AH1971 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
He just measured under 6'6 at the Adidas AA camp a few weeks back which I'm sure is factoring into the ranking demotion. Thought to be a 6'7-6'8 stretch 4, he's a wing without a handle. -
