We're going to have to have an NBA team because Woodson rarely beats teams with equal or superior athletes.
-
This is a very good question. Is it "we want to him to get a 4th year so he can go out on a stronger year"? Or is it, " we're going to prove to everyone that Mike can coach and we don't care how long or how much money it takes"? I'm starting to worry it's the latter.

My guess is dollar amounts needed have been discussed with the players representative.

I think if FAU makes the tournament, you need to go after May. You've proven you're a really good college coach if you take FAU, a school with no tradition, to the tournament two consecutive years.

Mike Woodson to return as coach next season
JF87 replied to iubb's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
You need continuity to build a program. That's best achieved with having players in your system 3-4 years that can assist newer players learning the schemes. Woodson was complaining this year that the guys were just learning to play with one another in early February. When you recruit high school kids, you can recruit to need and skill and how they fit your system. In the portal, you may be able to recruit players that meet your needs and fit your system, but that can be a crapshoot. An example, IU missed on portal guards last year. When that happens you are just taking what you can get and trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole. -
A question for those of you in the know who follow the metrics. How is Michigan State ranked 23 in the Net and 19th in KenPom? They are just 4-8 in quad 1 games. We are ranked 94th in net and we are 3-8 in quad 1 games and both schools are 5-4 in quad 2. I just don't get why Michigan St is so high?

KathywithaC was back this morning in the McNeeley thread letting us know that at IU the wheels of change turn slowly. I'm paraphrasing, but it was something along those lines.

I think you are wrong about Cupps. I believe he can develop into a Brad Davison type in his Junior and Senior years. He was never supposed to be an impact player as a freshman.

Mike Woodson to return as coach next season

Agree, I know that Xavier's IU career had some highs and lows and he has his detractors (me at times). I hope the crowd pays him proper respect for the time and effort he has put in for us.

I disagree. The first year coach Woodson had no idea how TV timeouts worked. This year I'm confident that he does. :)

Mike Woodson to return as coach next season

I'm not sure high school recruiting can be salvaged. Coach Woodson turns 66 in 2 weeks. He's already on the hot seat. Even if he comes across as a likeable coach, what 4-year recruit is going to want to commit to someone that possibly won't be here. That leaves us with one and done and portal or Woodson gets an extension to prove that he will be here for several more years. I think I just $hit myself at that thought. -
A discussion is good. We need to hear all voices. We can't complain about group think from administrators without recognizing it may be happening here. Personally, I'm pushing for a change. I'd like for Woodson to retire. College basketball coaching is different than being an NBA coach. Imo coach Woodson is learning on the job. I'll read NGW and concede points where he may be correct. It doesn't hurt my feelings when someone disagrees with me.

I think there are most likely several variables that went into McNeeley"s decision. We will probably never know how much weight style of play or coach relationship played into it. McNeeley is projected as a one and done. It makes sense that he would want to play in the NCAA Tournament next year and that's much more likely playing at Kansas given the current trajectory of the IU program.
-
I do agree that Walsh (or whichever assistant was the lead) had to be in contact with McNeeley regularly through texts and calls. There's a good chance the communication issue has been embellished in some of the reports.

Matt Painter has a system and recruits to it. He wants big (tall and physical) post players, three-point shooters, and throw in an athlete to play defense. Painter can tell a player that this is what we do and this how you will fit in. Woodson's approach has been "get me the most talented players possible and I'll figure it out". This makes it difficult to establish any team identity. Recruits look at IU's offense the last 3 years and they see heavy post play. The style is not enticing for wings or shooting guards.

Does anyone know if this person has any inside knowledge or are they just regurgitating what they've read on message boards?
-
Wait! Doyel doxes the guy that started the fire Mike Woodson petition, but Osterman won't release the name of the IU Athletic Department spokesman that said Woodson was returning? And journalist wonder why they have little credibility, and no one buys the paper anymore.
-
Imo Dolson is waiting to see what happens in these next two games. Two losses and some portal entries may move him to act.
-
Dakich is a joke. I'm sure he has some knowledge, but he can't help himself but take the non-conformist approach. If the crowd runs one way, he purposely runs the other way. His schtick is tiring.
-
There wasn't a press release.

Oh my God! Part of the coaching job is constructing a team for next year. You only had 1 recruit signed (which you lost) and you had possibly 5 scholarships to fill, and you haven't talked with Galloway or Leal about whether they were using their covid years? That is so inept. Woodson must go. Every time Woodson opens his mouth he embarrasses IU and himself.
-
Hard pass from Woodson. He wasn't a top 30 prospect coming out of high school.
-
Dolson comes from a fundraising background. I'm sure his instincts are to keep the big donors happy. Imo, it will take pressure from other good size donors for us to move off Woodson. Maybe a donor civil war is in our future.
