IU Mens/Womens Swimming and Diving
go iu bb replied to LIHoosier's topic in Other Indiana Hoosiers Athletics
They get 4 swimmers into the A finals: 100 free - Mathias (7) 200 breast - Matheny (6) 200 fly - Burns (4), Frankel (7) - there is also a swim off for the 8th spot so unlikely Frankel finishes worse than that The divers will likely come through with some points. Hafnaoui certainly would've helped. IU isn't going to score any points in the 1650 this year and didn't score in the 500. Edit: Hoosiers are in a good position to hold on to 4th place, especially when taking diving into account. https://swimswam.com/2023-mens-ncaas-day-4-ups-downs-cal-puts-it-foot-down/ -
We sucked in the years he was at IU too.
-
Whaaaat? Didn't get enough chances? He played in 82 games under 2 coaching staffs. Under Woodson, he played in 61 games for ~12.5 minutes per. That's just chances in games. He's had countless chances in practice to gain the confidence of the coaches. You really don't think that's giving him enough chances?

An article before tonight's finals about Van Mathias changing up his events this year. It's paid off for him and IU. https://swimswam.com/fifth-year-van-mathias-makes-most-of-lineup-change-qualifies-2nd-overall-in-100-breast/ IU "won" day, scoring 160 points. https://swimswam.com/2023-mens-ncaa-championships-day-3-scoring-analysis/ Article on Burns' win. It has a video of the race and he had a great 3rd turn/underwater. Hit the wall 4th and was 1st when he came up. https://swimswam.com/brendan-burns-rockets-to-3-all-time-in-100-back-with-upset-ncaa-title-in-43-61/ -

The Hoosiers had a GREAT day 3 and jumped up to 4th place. 2 Hoosiers won their events and 3 other individuals and the 400 medley relay medaled. It all started in the morning by placing 6 in the A finals and 3 in the B finals. Most of them then improved on their prelims seeding. Frankel finished 3rd in the 100 fly (Burns was 9th) - PR Mathias was 2nd in the 100 breast (Matheny was 9th) Burns is the National Champion in the 100 back - PR, pool record, 3rd all time Capobianco is the National Champion on the 3m with Henninger 3rd and Tyler 4th - that's 51 points right there 400 medley relay was 2nd - faster than previous NCAA record https://swimswam.com/2023-division-i-mens-ncaa-championships-day-3-finals-live-recap/ Non-IU: Marchand broke his own NCAA record in the 400 IM by 3 seconds. 3:28.82 and won by almost 6 seconds. He's insanely good. -
I had similar thoughts when I read that comment. Part of the reason Miller missed on TKR was because he tried to recruit him as the next TJD but TKR thought of himself as a college 3/stretch 4. So instead of going to IU where he probably would've played, he went to PU where he redshirted, then rode the pine (~11 mpg), and now might have to play center. Ironic.
-
And then there were none. B1G is out of the tournament. 8 teams in. 1 team in S16. 0 in E8. Embarrassing. Of course, most were not seeded to go far but I think they underperformed expectations as a whole, mostly thanks to PU losing in round 1.

IU Mens/Womens Swimming and Diving

IU in 6th after day 2. Capo finished 2nd in the 1m, only 4.5 points behind 1st. The 200 free relay finished 9th after coming in seeded 12th. Van Mathias was the only individual swimmer to score points, finishing 11th in the 50 free. Not IU but there were a few records broken. Marchand of ASU swam an insane 1:36.34 in the 200 IM, breaking his own record by over 1 second. https://swimswam.com/2023-division-i-mens-ncaa-championships-day-2-finals-live-recap/ -

Archie Miller recruiting in a nutshell.
-
If he had announced that he was staying, it would be all over the place by now. The IU media would've picked it up and spread the news.

(2024) PF - Derik Queen to Maryland

That's a very spread out conference. -
I'm shocked! (that it took even this long. I though it would happen on Monday.)
-
A shooting guard who can't shoot and had a Miller offer. Yep, checks out.

You're right, there are no guarantees of health and playing level. However, XJ was out with a broken foot. We're not talking a blown knee or a torn Achilles or anything like that. It was a broken foot. By the time next season rolls around, he'll have had close to a year to recover. In fact, he was close to being back at the end of this season. If he doesn't play well next season, I don't think it'll have anything to do with his injury this year since there is no reason to think he wouldn't get back to 100% after a broken bone.

You think you do but you don't actually look at things with an unbiased view. Reading your posts for a while now, it appears you view everything IU through a pessimistic lens and everything concerning other schools through a more optimistic lens. -
If Xavier had participated in the B1G tournament, it would've disqualified him from a medical waiver regardless of number of games played. Another criterium is that all the games played in must be in the early part of the season. IIRC, it is the first 1/2 of the season.

A coaching change should allow for immediate eligibility imo. Probably a scholarship change (loses scholarship) as well. If I'm reading that right, if an athlete transfers to a school then that school ends their program (like Saint Francis), they'd have to sit a year when transferring to a new school. NCAA still has to find ways to be a$$h0l3s, I guess.

Coaching Changes Nationally

He did a good job at PSU but it's not as though he was dominant there. 37-31 overall, 17-23 in the B1G, 1-1 in the NCAA tournament. A top finish of 9th in conference. Good numbers for PSU but not exactly awe inspiring. -

Men off to a good start at the championship meet with by finishing 5th in the 200 medley relay and 4th in the the 800 free relay. In 5th place after day 1 with 60 points. https://swimswam.com/2023-division-i-mens-ncaa-championships-day-1-finals-live-recap/ The medley relay had some insane breast splits with the top 5 splits of all time happening this year. One of those fast splits was IU's Van Mathias going 22.53 for 4th all time. https://swimswam.com/2023-m-ncaas-leon-marchand-swims-22-27-50-breast-1-split-all-time/ IU is expected to score big in diving this year. https://swimswam.com/ncaa-mens-diving-preview-how-zones-scores-project-to-impact-the-team-race/ 1. They can still stay if the coach allows them to. The coaches aren't obligated to take a player who entered the portal back if the player changes their mind. I imagine that the number of players who stay after entering the portal is a small percentage.

This reminds me of how glad I am that Ethan Morton chose Purdue over IU. -
Right. There's a lot of difference there but I was just pointing out that it isn't a sure thing like it would be if he had played in 2 fewer games. The NCAA can, and does, deny waivers. And just like with everything else the NCAA does, they do it inconsistently.
-
Since Johnson is over the 30% of games played threshold this season, it's not guaranteed he'll be granted a waiver. He ended up playing in 11 of 35 games (I don't know if all of the postseason games count or not) which is 31.6%. Regular season only it's 11 of 31 (35.4%) or if the 1st game of the B1G tournament counted since they are guaranteed to play at least one there, then 11 of 32 for 34.3%. This lady just got denied. She did play 2 more games and her team played 3 less games (32) so it's not exactly the same but it does show that the NCAA doesn't rubber stamp this waiver. https://cyclonefanatic.com/2023/03/ncaa-denies-stephanie-soares-waiver-to-return-for-extra-year/ Hopefully, we hear soon one way or another of their decision. IU probably filed as soon as they could, which was after Selection Sunday.
