IU Mens/Womens Swimming and Diving
go iu bb replied to LIHoosier's topic in Other Indiana Hoosiers Athletics
Iowa 50 and 100 free state champion commits to IU. 2022 class. https://swimswam.com/iowa-hs-state-champ-alex-stone-verbals-to-indiana-hoosiers-2022/ -
PER (Player Efficiency Rating) for each. These are mostly based on offense with only a few defensive stats used to calculate. It works better for the NBA since the teams all play each other while in the NCAA there can be huge differences in the competition's talent level. Not perfect but gives a decent idea. These numbers can also vary by position (bigs tend to have much higher numbers) but overall 15 should be average. Around 20 will be all-B1G for guards. Guard play for IU has been a problem for the past few years and these numbers back that up. Franklin 19-20: 7.9 20-21: 14.4 Career: 11.8 Durham 17-18: 9.3 18-19: 9.7 19-20: 14.9 20-21: 13.3 Career: 11.9 Stewart 17-18: 13.7 19-20: 19.2 Career: 16.6 Johnson 18-19: 17.9 19-20: 14.8 20-21: 20.8 Career: 17.2 For the record Phinisee has had PER of 10.9, 12.8, and 9.3 with 10.9 for his career. That's bad. Really bad. For comparison Yogi had PER of 13.0, 18.9, 21.7, 22.9 and career 19.4. From this it appears there should be a significant improvement in guard play. We won't know fur sure until the games are played but this indicates we'll have a couple of pretty good guards.

He's trying to obtain a very diverse playing experience.
-
He'll be at his 4th university. I think he has issues.
-
If Miller had the managers and graduate assistants being primarily in charge of developing the players it would explain a lot of the last 4 years. It would also make me that much happier that he is no longer the coach.

Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff

The only uncommitted 5* I see is Efton Reid. If that isn't the player being referenced then there wouldn't be any issue if they had committed but hadn't yet signed. It could get tricky if the player has signed, like Jabari Smith mentioned above. Does the transfer waiver this year include incoming freshmen if the school refuses to give the player a release? Assuming, of course, this scenario comes to pass, which I'm not sold on. -

Hopefully, 2 more transfers. -
You might be in to something about him not liking criticism. The Daily Hoosier had a story about his development over the summer. In it, someone, I think his brother, said how sometimes Franklin would get very upset and yell then hang up the phone because he didn't like what he was being told. It sounded like he still took the criticism and used it to improve but definitely didn't like hearing it.

I really wanted him to stay but now that he's gone I'm kind of indifferent about it. It don't wish him ill but I also don't really care if he does well or not. That's pretty much how I look at everyone who transfers out, when they're gone I don't care one way or another how well they do.
-
That was what they said when it started but in practice it hasn't been even close to that. IU has played Duke, UNC, and other top teams in the ACC even when IU wasn't very good. IU's parings in the challenge have been a joke. It's 2 open scholarships regardless of if Brunk is on the team next year or not. He doesn't count toward the scholarship cap this season.

Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff

Being a long time assistant at the school certainly wouldn't hurt but I doubt there's been any conversation saying that whichever ex-IU player is the assistant will become the next coach after Woodson. I don't think there's any guarantee of that. -
I know coaches can't contact players who aren't in the portal but can the players themselves initiate the contact? Or is no communication allowed in either direction when the player isn't in the portal? For clarity, by this I mean can the player call another school's coach and say, "I want to play for you. Will you take me if I enter the portal?" I realize they can't complete the transfer without entering the portal. I'm just wondering what communication is allowed or if none is in either direction.

I doubt Fife is now the "coach in waiting" that people are seeming to assume he is. I think even if he came Lewis also wouldn't be a "coach in waiting" so there wouldn't really be that conflict. If he's successful, I think Woodson will spend about 10 years at IU before he retires. Maybe as many as 15 if he wants to work into his late 70s like a few of the current coaches out there. Even if he retires in 7 years at 70, that's a long time for someone to hang around as the "coach in waiting." UCLA just made the Final Four as a First Four so his stock has to be sky high right now. He might get a HC job this summer. If not and the team does well maybe next year or the year after. So it could be a career decision. Maybe he just really likes LA. Or maybe he wants to be as stable as possible for his family (I'm assuming he has kids, I have no idea) so he might not want to move every few years. Taking a HC position and doing well would likely be the best way to try to get the IU position when it opens up. -

I'd be cool if it was an NBA skills guy or something. -

Didn't see that one. It looks like it would be better to pass on him. -

I had no idea who that is and I imagine I'm not the only one. So I'll do the work for those people: https://rolltide.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/yasir-rosemond/708 -

Clamping down how? What control do they have over the parents?
-
I agree with that last bit, especially because it sounds like he's still practicing with the team. That means he's getting a chance to get to know Woodson and Fife as well as get a feel for their coaching styles. This will give him an idea if he'll for the new system (I think he'd be ideal) and if they'd be able to help him develop his game. So that is an advantage IU has over the other schools. If he does end up leaving it can't be said that Franklin didn't give Woodson and company plenty of opportunities to convince him to stay; he did his due diligence.
-
Still 3 unused scholarships (1 if Franklin and Thompson return), 1 open (or unannounced) assistant coaching position, and 1 open DOBO position. So there is more going on. Does anyone know if they'll hire a Director of Player Development? Last one I remember IU having was Elston and he left a couple of years ago.
-
Yes, if he is a good coach, and many people who have worked with him or played for him says he is, then he should be able to adjust his scheme to the players that he has. Flexibility is desirable in coach, not the rigidness we saw for the last 4 years.
-
Right. The 4 still is lacking unless Hunter or Geronimo makes a large jump in the off season.
-
My extremely reliable source is saying that he'll commit to IU:

Maybe they think if they can convince everyone on this board how much California sucks then Lewis will realize that it sucks then will accept the assistant coaching job at Indiana? IDK -
I get what you're saying but Franklin was one of the players that really seemed to play hard all the time. His improvement over the summer speaks of his passion for the game. That drive to win and hustle during games is what's been missing overall from the team and Franklin was one of the few who showed it.
