This 100%. Sports and basketball aside, Bucker is liked by the Governor and the IU Administration, and has the respect of many IU Faculty. I don't see him stepping down or going away anytime soon. One thing that surprises me, or perhaps doesn't, is that the IU faculty have been mute regarding IU athletics in general. Honestly, most are pretty apathetic to it, which I think is really unfortunately. I sure wish that my colleagues would care and see the value that it brings to the institution, when we have strong teams. As a faculty leader, I was surprised how many simply did not care when Scott Dobson gave the annual athletics report to the Bloomington Faculty Council. There seemed to be zero interest during his report. During that report, I really wanted to chime in and ask about the state of IU basketball, e.g. Woodson's tenure with IU, but I imagined that it would have been batted away, and my faculty colleagues would have seen my response as a nuisance. One interesting thing that Dolson mentioned was that IU was focused and committed to improving football, and even said that roughly 85% of athletics revenue across the US comes from football. This seems to be quite true, especially when you see that IU is consistently at the bottom of the Big10 for athletics revenue. So, folks, looks like we might be becoming a football school. Sigh. Good thing for revenue, but a sad thing for a fan like me that prefers basketball. But, I must ask, why can't we be both!?!?!
  2. Regardless of the outcome, this team is fun to watch. The wife and I haven’t missed watching a game this year. So enjoyable.

Since there have been some conversations here about the role of the Board of Trustees this post is hopefully relevant. Indiana Senate bill 202 just passed the Indiana Senate today and is being sent to the House. Regardless of whether you agree with the content, one provision could substantially impact athletics on our campus. Right now, 7 trustees are appointed by the governor and 2 by alumni. The bill proposes that alumni will have no say. Instead those 2 appointees will be made 1 by the Senate and 1 by the House. I could see this being a bad thing perhaps for athletics, and allow substantially less flexibility where decisions about hiring and firing could be made. Just some food for thought.

    IUBB @ Rutger - Tuesday, 01.09.24 @ 7:00 on Peacock

At least there’s IUWBB to root for this season. I’ll still watch and root for the men’s team, but the women…hot dam, the know how to hoop.

    Cutting the Cord

Now that I am in my 40s, I figure it’s about time to stopping using my parents cable to watch IU basketball. Not to mention the fact that they moved, and their cable service won’t show me games not in their region for some channels. Anyone got a favorite out there for watching college basketball and which has BTN? Hoping to subscribe to one service to catch all then IU games, except for Peacock, which I’ve already got. Was thinking Hulu with live TV.

    2023-2024 IUBB Schedule

I got season tickets last year after being on the waitlist for one year too. I hadn’t built up any priority points at the time. This year, I had about 90 points and was in the 90th percentile for point total, so I got the exact same seats as last year. But, I also bought football season tickets, which will add an additional 125 points starting next year. That would have put me in the 70th percentile. So I suspect next year I’ll have closer seats, but who knows. Seems like it takes a lot of time, or donation money, to really move up. This year, for example, I donated 500 bucks, and that was only worth 50 points. So, football tickets give a big boost, but it’s too bad they didn’t apply to this years total!

    College Bball Thread

Interesting...well, we've done much better generating revenue over the past few years. I created this report a few years back up until 2019 using data from the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. I just haven't got around to updating it - https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/chamccoy/viz/NCAARevenues/Conference-Year. I teach a class where students make Tableau visualizations, and we use these datasets to create a similar report.
  8. I was at the Illinois vs IU game, and the row directly behind my seats this year is the start of one of the student sections. Just before tip off, the video with Isiah Thomas played. A student behind me said, “I’ve always wondered who that guy is?” Without skipping a beat, her friend said, “duh, that’s Calbert Cheaney, one of the best IU basketball players of all time.” She said it so confidently that I didn’t have the heart to correct her.
  9. So, I just got a message that I can renew my men's basketball season tickets. This will be my second year with season tickets. I was given advice that if I want to get my seats moved up, that I should donate some money. Doesn't have to be a ton of money, just some. Has anyone done this before? Just curious, because there are a number of funds and campaigns that I can donate too. Also, does anyone know if I donate now, would that be considered when seat selection is determined? Any advice would be welcome!

    Season Ticket Renewal

Thanks so much! My wife has been reminding me to donate for months now, and I figured I'd missed the chance. Thankfully I haven't.

@Chris007 finding a job with an Informatics degree here in Bloomington is not hard at all. Our job placement rate for the 2022 class was about 95% found a job within 6 months of graduations and the starting salary was around 70K. I've never met a student with solid grades, >3.0 that didn't have a job before graduation. Actually, most of the student have a job in hand after their summer internship going into their senior year. Our career services office is stellar, and students are encouraged to work with them starting their freshmen year. I know I might be a little biased as a faculty member, but I think that we do a fantastic job.

    IU Schools

@Chris007 I am a Luddy faculty member in the Informatics department, so I am pretty in the know :) I'd be more than happy to set up a meeting with you and your kid to chat about Luddy. I love recruiting and meeting with prospective students. Actually, my very first job years ago with in the IU Office of Admissions, so I am also able to speak quite broadly about IU academics in general. Feel free to shoot me a DM and I'd be happy to set something up. Also, when are you coming? I'll be out recruiting high schools students overseas until April 17th, so if you are coming after that, then great! If not, I could put in contact with some stellar Luddy faculty for you to chat with. Just let me know!

    Non-IU NCAA TOURNAMENT GAMES

Thanks! Come to find out that the TSN network, Canadians version of ESPN, will be showing all the mens and womens games across their networks. They just weren’t showing the first four! Now I can avoid this conference and just watch basketball.

    Non-IU NCAA TOURNAMENT GAMES

I am currently in Toronto till Saturday for a conference, and I’ve tried everything to watch the first four for the mens and womens tournaments. Hulu Live, nope. VPN, nope. Sports bars only have hockey, tennis, and baseball. I think I might actually crossed the river Styx. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against Canada. But, I’ve certainly got something against ridiculous cross-border licensing regulations, which is making me hate Canada at the moment.

    IUWBB @ POTFB - Sunday 2/5/23 @ 2:00 on FS1

My wife and I were at Mackey today. The amount of IU fans there was amazing! It was a great atmosphere all around and such a fun game to watch. Loved that Holmes stepped out for that 3!

IUBB vs POTFB - Saturday, 2/4/23 @ 4:00 on ESPN

My father in-law is a Purdue grad. And a diehard follower of Purdue basketball. He is an amazing man, who though had a good career just will never really spend money on himself. So, for Christmas I gave him my two season tickets for the game. A hard choice, but I figured he deserved it. So, I’ll be watching it from home today. But, I did describe him to my students and told them to heckle him a bit if they see him :)

    Basketball ticket info.....

I've got two tickets to the Rutgers at IU game on Tuesday, Feb 7 at 6:30. They are in row 34 section H seats 109 and 110. Selling them for 100 each, and can digitally transfer them to you through IU ticketing. I am a season ticket holder, but can't make this game because both my wife and I have to teach during that time this week. Reach out if interested. Edit: sold

    IUWBB - News and Notes

At the Bloomington Faculty Council meeting today, Dolson presented and said that the women’s team has an average gpa of 3.62. That’s simple amazing. And that Grace Berger recently had a journal article published. Also amazing!
  20. Been looking forward to this game all week! My wife and I are bundled up. Shots to keep us warm. Now a 20 min walk to the game!!!

    IUMS NCAA Tournament Thread

It should work. I was able to watch the semi finals, and I have the same package as you. You could do a trial run with other ESPN+ content first to see if it works.
  22. Walked by there at around 7:00 AM on my way to teach my 8:00 AM class and there was already a line. Also, I had a few students tell me that they saved one of their excused absences so that they could line up early. Love that.

    Basketball ticket info.....

That’s such a bummer! I called 1 min after I saw the email, but they didn’t call back for an hour, at which point I was in a meeting with a senior colleague. Luckily my colleague said to take it and that the call was more important than the meeting!!!
