Auburn coach Bruce Pearl has an enormous amount of respect for the "blueblood Indiana basketball program,'' and he would have loved to coach there. “Indiana was my dream job, it really was. I love everything about Indiana basketball. The timing was never right, I suppose. Nothing ever really aligned, but it would have been a dream come true to coach Indiana. That's how much I love and respect that program.''

Yeah I can understand not wanting Pearl coz of age/buyout but his performance at Auburn is just not a good point IMO. He's had more 20+ win seasons than any of our coaches other than Knight and we've had 4 30+ win seasons, Pearl's already had 1 at Auburn.

Right. Breaking the law is bad. Breaking NCAA rules? Most of the time, the rules are pretty obscure and dumb anyway.

That's what agents/lawyers are for, right? If he wants it so bad, "make it happen guys..." The timing never works out that cleanly anyway, so it's a moot point IMO

I really don't care about coaches helping kids get free stuff, NIL money, make connections, etc. I do care about coaches covering up actual crimes (not NCAA violations that are often silly), recruiting drug dealers/etc., or being a drunkard domestic abuser themself. I'm guessing Pearl has learned a lot since 2014, and the NCAA has also drastically lost leverage. I'm not concerned about his ability to represent IU in a respectable way that meets our standards. I'm all for "second chances" in this instance, if you're really so concerned about him being a "bad guy." Bruce Pearl's never actually done anything truly abhorrent, unlike another "candidate" who shall remain unnamed

Our last one was 22 years ago. Bruce's was in 2019. The man is aging like fine wine as a coach and showing no signs of slowing down.

We should not shoot ourselves in the foot if we want to prioritize the basketball program. Sampson was also in a totally different era. The power dynamics have shifted. Anyhow we probably won't agree here and that's okay

The NCAA are a bunch of limp ****s (sorry for the language). I don't care about a show cause penalty from way back in the day. Its a way different power dynamic. The UNC AD all but told the NCAA to f themselves over a transfer WR being ruled ineligible, then lo and behold, he became eligible. It's a new age in college basketball. I care if Bruce Pearl does something like bring in criminals, is a domestic abuser... if he bends some NCAA rules that are rarely enforced, I will live with that risk personally, weight that against what we have seen him deliver as a product on the court.

Yup. Six years with Pearl would be sure to have us in good shape... actually build a "bridge" for the next guy to come in. If May actually has an IU out clause in his FAU contract, he could probably get it added to a contract at a P5 school too. Of course, timing is always the mystery... it's certainly ripe for a change this offseason though. Can't go into offseason with a dead duck coaching staff.

I agree with all your points except this one. To my knowledge, Bruce's scandals were the 2017-2018 Adidas payments (which he only had to serve a 2 game suspension for whereas others had harsher punishments... and is now largely legal) and recording a conversation with a recruit where they admitted that Illinois gave them impermissible benefits while an assistant at Iowa. So if anything, he was trying to do the "right" thing in that situation according to the NCAA... who I have zero interest in appeasing/giving very little weight to their prior punishments which everyone knows are as phony as it gets. Pearl dabbles in the grey area that you need to compete in this day and age. I want someone who can help us compete while living up to our standards. People who have been in Bruce Pearl's orbit generally speak very highly of him as a man and his character. Still being available to his guys, even from Southern Indiana, to this day. In the world of "bad guys vs. good guys" you can find an awful lot worse bad guys than Bruce Pearl IMO.

I can't keep up with the pace of this thread lol. I know paywall content can't be posted, but re: Trilly "bomb"... can those with first hand information clarify ... is something imminent/materially changed?

I think Gallo and Cupps backcourt would have us in a similar position to this year. I do think Liam could play well pretty much in any lineup, but this lineup would lack some quickness/speed IMO. And rim protection, though Reneau has shown some more of that this year than I've expected.

I'll be taking a week off work in July whenever this puppy is finally released.
