Eh, while the betting public can influence a spread, bookmakers are still setting the lines. And if you bet sports you know that it’s freakish how often a game ends right on or within a point of the posted line. If Vegas let public betting drive spreads they would get HAMMERED by the sharps and smart money guys. They are beyond good at limiting exposure to risk. You don’t hear about many sports books going out of business.

I’m no fan of CTC, but in all fairness I would tend to agree that what he did at IU was to resurrect us. He inherited a mess, and got the program back to the #1-ranked team in the country and won a couple B1G titles. Certainly didn’t want him around long-term and felt his brand of basketball wasn’t rooted in sustainable principles. But he did what he’s attempting to do there at UGA for us by building the team up from the bottom to national prominence. I actually think UGA is a good spot for CTC and that he will find some success there (by their measures) given a few years. It’s a low-profile position with attainable goals and $EC resources to recruit.

Or eliminate the B1G tournament.

I didn’t see anywhere to put it, so started my first ever game thread. Merge if I just missed it somewhere. Vegas has IU favored -1. Someone in the desert must know something not many of us have seen reason to believe. I had to dig deep down to find it, but I think we get after a poor Iowa defense and team that has been weak away from home and our boys get a desperate W, looking just competent enough to make us fans keep hoping.

Ha. Not sure I’m ready to go there yet. Granted, it’s weird seeing UCONN lose by double digits at all; but their only three losses are to South Carolina, Baylor and Oregon. The #1, #2 and #3 teams in the country respectively. Certainly starting to see some more much-needed parity in the women’s game for sure. Next year might be when we will have a better idea if your questioning UCONN’s dominance has legs. They graduate 5 seniors this year of an 11-player roster. That’s some significant turnover and even though Arriema undoubtedly will bring in a class, UCONN has perennially had senior-led teams usually with one senior being marginally better than almost every player in the country. All that said, certainly don’t want to see them in our region anywhere before the sweet 16.

That Louisville loss might have given Duke an ACC title. L’ville still has to play at Florida St. I don’t see another loss for Duke with ACC-cupcakes galore left on their slate.

#5 Louisville loses to 11-13 Georgia Tech. Likely ACC Player of the year Jordan Nwora has 2 points. ?? Cannot wait for the Big Dance this year. I sincerely wouldn’t be shocked if 8 of the 16 teams with 1-4 seeds get beat in the first round. Very average top 10 this season.

I hear you Naples, and see your point. The point I was originally trying to make was that the reason a UK/UL school smaller in size than IU throws money at coaches and their sports programs to perform at an elite level, is because that is their primary way of marketing the university. If their sports teams dropped to being irrelevant, what else do they have to keep them in the public conscious? IU’s enrollment numbers you posted kind of support what I’m saying. We don’t NEED elite sports programs to remain relevant and attractive as a university because you’ve got Kelley School a top 10 B-school, O’Neil School (SPEA) the #1 public affairs graduate program in the nation, School of Journalism #7 in the world, and our Performing Arts Ballet historically #2 only behind Juliard. Our enrollment isn’t as heavily reliant on being known for our sports teams. I don’t think the two universities from Kentucky can afford (no pun intended) NOT to spend big to keep athletics in the national spotlight, with them being the core marketable brand for the school and programs themselves. Wouldn’t trade the value of our Kelley degrees for a conference title though, so what can you do I guess.

Don’t know if I’ve seen something like that before. Bama had only 8 made 2-point FGs. They had 58 attempted 3-point FGs. They were literally lining five-guys around the arc and just passing it around until the first guy gets open and launching. 22 for 58 from distance. Truly unreal to watch. 58?!?

Auburn all tied up at home with :17 to go against mighty 13-10 Alabama. How about this stat. Alabama has shot 50 THREE’s in this game. They’re 19-50 from the 3pt line. What do we average, 9 attempts a game? Of Note: Auburn’s second leading scorer, Isaac Okoro was helped back to the locker room injured. That would be a blow.

Not that I disagree with the sentiment, but that’s a little misleading. The Rutgers loss would also mean we are only 1-game back in the loss column from a tie for 6th, and have played fewer games than every team above us. Not saying we are deserving of better, but the difference between 3rd and 12th right now is two losses.

You ever hear much about UK or Louisville’s Business school? There’s how. Their continued investment in their athletics programs are the only thing that keeps enrollment up and keeps filling the tuition coffers.

IU is unfortunately not a non-profit organization. So restricted vs. non-restricted funds separation aren’t legally required. Doesn’t mean a big ear-marked donation that didn’t get used for what the donor intended wouldn’t piss off a bunch of people with deep pockets, but IU can do what they want with it once they have it.

Man, the B1G is just batty. Illinois loses their 3rd game of a likely 5 in a row, which will put them at 8-7 and likely tied for around 8th in the B1G. Said it before, but it’s just crazy in this conference when you think about how the Illini were tied with Maryland for 1st place four days ago. Also, hard to wrap your head around the fact that after tonight IU is only 2 games in the loss column out of 3rd place. Extreme parity or extreme mediocrity? Not sure.

Yeah, and it’s a weird injury when it happens because it’s season-over, but you’re not in an incredible amount of pain, you just know that there’s nothing there anymore holding leg together. Maybe not the case here, but just because he got up and was helped off doesn’t mean it wasn’t serious. He didn’t put any pressure on it, which probably means he couldn’t. Some people tear ACLs and don’t even get them replaced. You can function with it torn, but it can give at any minute and high level activity is not an option. Again, maybe just sprained or strained something, but that motion where the whole body moves laterally away from a planted foot is how knees pop.

Hope for the best for the kid, but I’ve torn the ACL in my right knee twice and that’s about exactly what it looks like when it happens.

Sparty survives by 1 on a put back dunk. They looked terrible. Ayo Dosunmo for ILL looked like he might have torn his ACL on the last play of the game.

Glad Illinois showed up to play in the second half. Turned a snooze fest into a heck of a college basketball game. Sparty choking and Izzo crying as usual.

That win will likely stand as the single best win on any tournament team’s resume by season’s end. Neutral court, double digit win, only loss of the season. Man I want to see that IU team come out a couple more times this year.

There’s a very real possibility that by next weekend MSU is 8-7 in conference and owners of a five-game losing streak. They’re @ILL Tuesday and home against Maryland Sat. If MSU pulls off a win at Illinois, another very real possibility exists that the #1 team in the B1G as of last Friday, Illinois, could be 8-7 by next Tuesday and owners of their own 5-game losing streak, nestled in the middle of the B1G pack. This conference is crazy. Both teams looking at possibly going from 1st in conference to tied for 9th in a 14-day span.

Moving on from coaches is only bad for a program if you hire another mediocre coach who can’t attract elite talent. It’s all about timing and opportunity coming together the one time, and history is easily forgotten. Simple recent example of a proud franchise who made the decision mediocrity and waiting for both player and coaching development to turn things around was too big a risk, with fan support and former players growing more vocal about letting their rich history and tradition slip away: The Lakers missed the playoffs and had a below .500 record six straight years beginning in 2013. They went through 4 coaches in the next 7 years. They had one of the most-coveted young, up-and-coming coaches in the entire league (Walton) and could very well have waited for young talent of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Isaiah Thomas to develop into an elite team, and maybe they would have. But elite franchises and blue blood programs don’t wait and hope when the opportunity becomes available to fix it now. They took the sure thing going out and getting Lebron, AD and Danny Green and hiring Frank Vogel. Boom. NBA Championship favorites, year 2, and an alumni and fan base comfortably back where they expect to be. Nobody talking about 4 coaches in 7 years. If circumstances were different maybe Archie gets a couple more at-bats, but timing and opportunity with the new AD, a groundswell change of stance by the BoT being driven by pressure from prominent people with influence who maybe haven’t applied much pressure until recently, and the RIGHT coach with the right ties to the new AD happening to be open to a chance to single-handedly resurrect a once perennial power and create an untouchable legacy for himself - just might create that one big opportunity the powers that be have no choice but to do the bold, sure thing, while that window of timing and opportunity exist. It’s not as far-fetched a scenario as many might think based on our perspective as fans, that the ship is sinking and the only game-changers are not a possible and would never consider it. I would say, be a little patient, and watch for the stars to begin aligning one at a time.

Way too many Duke alums coaching that will be the next to take the reigns. Jeff Capel and Wojo are likely candidates depending on their situations when K decides to hang it up. Stevens is not untouchable. And Indiana is his home. He’s not waiting for Duke.
