Fire or ‘Way to Go!’ Tom Allen?
RaceToTheTop replied to Hoosierfan2017's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
In my opinion, Tom Allen is not a good coach for the job. Also in my opinion, you should always give a football coach four years to evaluate where the program is. My first opinion being in conflict with the other, side with #2 because I am also of the opinion that my opinion is nothing more than that AND it can be wrong -- and therefore the bigger the sample space to evaluate, the better. -

My hand is down. But our non-conference schedule basically evens that out and puts us at 3-3.....meaning we need three wins against Michigan State, Maryland, Rutgers, Purdue, and two other crossover games. Typically we lose to Michigan State, but we aren't losing to Rutgers unless we implode. So now we are 4-4 with Maryland, Purdue, and two crossover games in a majority of years. So IMO our floor most years is 4-8, our ceiling is 8-4. IMO Maryland and Purdue are tams we should be playing coin toss games. So there are five results left: 4-8, 5-7, 6-6, 7-5, and 8-4. Three of the five get us in a bowl. -

But it's not like we have been playing .500 ball against the West anyway. I think someone posted that we were winning like 35% of our games against the West and 16% against the East. So playing 6 games against the East and 3 against the West as we currently are produces 6*.16 + 3*.35 = 2.01 conference wins per season. Switch divisions and it becomes 6*.35 + 3*.16 = 2.58 wins. So with the winning rates we've had traditionally, we are talking about it being a difference of a win every other year. My problem is that we typically schedule three non-conference games we should win and still can't make a bowl. I don't think that asking to go 3-6 in conference more often than not is asking too much regardless of which division we are in. -

I agree the way the Big Ten is split is incredibly uneven. But year after year we schedule three non conference games that we should win. I don’t think that expecting to win 3 out of 8 conference games is asking too much. -

The cupboard wasn’t bare when Wilson left. I’m not advocating for an abusive coach being around, just that Allen is winning less with more talent. -

If you can’t occasionally beat a ranked team, you can’t consistently make bowls. Allen has never beaten one, which basically means he has to be perfect against unranked teams to make a bowl...and we haven’t been. Allen has brought in decent talent....and can’t win with it. I don’t see how it could be called anything but a bad hire. Wilson’s tenure might have ended in turmoil but the table was at s minimum set for his successor to succeed and Allen hasn’t. -

To be fair, we are talking about a sample size of 14 shots. -

Agree — 2020 we still have TJD, Brunk, and Race. And IF Jerome is healthy, I would think he’s a guy that can play some stretch 4. LOL....forgot that Justin would be a senior in 2020 as well. -

I wonder if our next commit is more likely to be a point guard or power forward. If it’s a point guard, unless there is player movement (which there probably will be), then we might be lacking in big bodies in a couple of years. -

......and Nick Baumgart now just re-tweeted that Matt Cross committed to Miami. -
I agree with this (and Old Friend's statement above). I certainly am hoping we do not see Ramsey get any kind of regular time behind center this year. He floats throws of any length and for that is supposed to hurt opponents with his legs, he certainly doesn't put up much yardage on the ground. He's probably better served being a gimmick guy whom you occasionally move around at different spots but doesn't get a bulk of time.....kind of what we tried to do with Reece Taylor. I'm hoping that if Penix doesn't work we go with Tuttle.

Yeah, the only Crystal ball that was recent was from Andrew Slater who put one toward Miami on August 14th of this year. Everything else is from 2018. -
Old Friend talking about 'here to pick a fight guy'......irony sure is ironic. BTW, 'you have been in every thread where I've seen your name' may be the most meaningless statement every made on a message board. You are correct; every thread I've been in I've been in.

While the suggestion that Sudfeld would have have a Oladipo like impact is hilarious, an average back up QB who has worked with Frank Reich has value. The price tag is likely low and if it isn't, you don't make the trade. The Colts are in a situation where everyone in their QB depth chart just moved up a spot. And the fact that he is injured right now means he's in a sell low state. Backing up Brissett is a Phillip Walker, 5'11" undrafted QB from Temple who completed over 60% of his passes in only one game in his college career and Chad Kelly, a guy who hasn't taken a snap in his three year career and can't even suit up for the first two weeks because of season because of conduct violations. It's not really a question of whether or not Sudfeld is better than the alternative backups they have.

Reading comprehension is a skill. A guy 'not sucking' does not mean 'players who played at IU are better than those who played anywhere else'. Get over yourself.
