Tracy Smith and Rick Greenspan had more to do with the baseball program's success than Glass did And McNeely, of all people, hired Ray Looze, which people also tend to forget If we're fortunate, Dolson won't have to make any coach-hiring decisions any time soon, and perhaps instead he can concentrate on replacing/renovating Mellencamp and giving the FB program its own lifting/training facility

2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves

don't think Langford really has to announce anything (unless he drops all the way out of the lottery, which is possible) because it's about 99% that he's gone -

thought we now have 2 schollies to give with Moore leaving (his & Langford's) and I assume 1 of those is Brunk's if he wants it, leaving the other for Watford/Quinones/Beverly, or grad transfer shooter like Pierce, or potential redshirt like Windham or Roderick... -

Crean's earning that much simply because he's coaching at an SEC "football factory" that can afford to throw that much at its BB coach. If AM were let go by Indiana, I seriously doubt if he'd be able to land a $3.5 Mil a year gig--more like half that, maybe $2 Mil a year, with IU on the hook for the full difference, at least until March of 2022. Add in the $25-$30 Mil for his replacement, and I suspect you'd be more likely to see McRobbie spend it on another academic building than on a new basketball coach. -

IMO it would take an offer from Kansas or maybe Texas (if they give up on Shaka) to get Beard away from Lubbock. Maybe UCLA, though CB's not a West Coast, Pac-12 guy. Don't think he'd be very interested in IU for any amount of money since he's friends with both Bob and Pat Knight. At this point in time it would cost somewhere around $40-45 Mil to replace Miller; don't see any way IU can spend that kind of money in 2019. Or 2020 or 2021. I'm afraid we're just gonna have to hope AM can get Watford (doubtful IMO) or some other shooter, and beat out Holtmann for Brunk using Moore's now vacated scholarship. -

I was told (by a well-connected friend) that it wasn't JUST Herbert driving the Sampson hire, it was also a "very political" BOT member who demanded that KS had to be hired, especially after the Davis dismissal -

my understanding re: IU and Beilein was that he was Greenspan's choice but the buyout to WVU was too big (back in the days before BTN $$$, IIRC). speaking of Greenspan, a lot of people didn't like him but IMO he's the one who deserves much credit for the baseball program's real improvements, not Glass, since it was Greenspan who hired Tracy Smith, the man most responsible by far for IU baseball's growth. similarly, IMO Glass doesn't deserve much credit for the successes of the swimming & diving programs--that credit should go to Mean Mike McNeely, who hired Ray Looze. I don't expect Glass to leave his position except by his own choice (perhaps when McRobbie retires?) and I assume FG and Shoulders, as working attorneys who both got their J.D.s from IU, already knew each other before Glass became the A.D. So I assume Shoulders is fully in Glass' corner, no matter what Tom Allen and Archie Miller do in the near future. If I read Miller's contract correctly, his current buyout would be approx. $17-18 Million, dropping to about $13-14 Mil in 2020 and around $10-11 Mil in 2021. If correct, that tells me Miller's not going anywhere for at least 2, probably 3, more seasons regardless of W-L record. Allen's buyout, on the other hand, is much more manageable but, having hired him without a real search, I fully expect Glass to give Allen AT LEAST as much time as he gave Bill Lynch, which means I assume Allen will probably be the coach for at least 2 more seasons too. -

think Davis is likely to get about as much playing time as Bryant even if TB stays-Davis is the more polished and comfortable post player anyway, Bryant's more of a stretch 4 who (unfortunately) isn't as good a shooter as he thinks he is but if TB comes back and plays 1 more season at IU, with Arch's coaching it's a golden opportunity for Thomas to play his way back up into the 1st round of the (2018) NBA draft -
only 40 years old too, IIRC...son of Duke's A.D.?
-
unlikely that Donovan/OKC will be "busy" for another couple of months minimum--if they lose in the 1st round, they'll be done around April 24th-27th. IMO people over-estimate the "timing/logistics" problems that would come with hiring a current NBA coach, especially one who may well lose in the 1st round of the playoffs. On the other hand, it's easy to under-estimate the attractions of not having to recruit, having summers off, not baby-sitting players, not dealing with parents, etc., etc. in the end, I think it boils down to whether Donovan wants to keep coaching in the NBA even without Harden, Durant and (soon) Westbrook, or if he might have an itch to return to college coaching "somewhere," in which case IU this year is probably more attractive than any job that might open next year (except possibly Louisville, if Pitino decides to retire).

if it's a college guy we'll probably have to wait until Final Four's over around April 1-3; if it's an NBA guy, probably have to wait even longer-1st round would end somewhere around April 23rd.
-
IIRC he was offered but turned IU down--NOT because Greenspan had fired his sister, but because of the alleged "drug culture" surrounding the men's program at the time.
-
people need to understand this: in the (unlikely) event that Donovan's sincerely interested and could be hired once the Thunder are eliminated (probably 1st round in April), the April 2017 recruiting period is the LEAST of IU's worries. Donovan's hiring would, overnight, get IU in much better shape with '18 and '19 recruits like Langford, Brooks, etc., and might even persuade most of IU's current roster to return for another season (not Blackmon, probably not OG, maybe not Bryant, but possibly everyone else including the incoming kids who've already signed LOIs)
-
he'll probably be presented as an "IU fan" by the national media if they can get away with it
