2021/2022 Men’s Basketball Season
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Hoosierfan2017's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Eh not really. Let’s see where he’s at come February. And in any event, I don’t even really know how this turned into a referendum on his shooting because I don’t think he’s a bad shooter. I just don’t think he alone is going to fix our shooting issues. He isn’t going to play or shoot enough for that this year. Franklin shot 42.4% from 3 on twice the volume of Bates and we were still 243rd in the country in 3 pt percentage last year. We need shooters all over. On top of TJD’s ridiculous performance, we won last because we shot 74% from the line and 53% from 3. -

That’s really splitting hairs on TJD, though. He was ranked 30th in his class and was the second highest 4 star in his class. He was rated at 0.989 and the lowest 5 star was a 0.9903. He was a McDonalds All American. You can count on a player like that contributing immediately. Banks is currently ranked 80th in his class. Totally different tiers of players. -
Our run game was terrible last year. 12th in the conference in yards per game and 13th in the conference in yards per attempt. Penix was our whole offense. When he went down, the offense struggled. We gained 217 yards against Wisconsin and only won because our defense held them to 6 points. Our defense was great. 1st in the conference in interceptions. 1st in turnovers per game. 2nd in sacks. 1st in red zone defense. 4th in points allowed per game. Our offense benefitted quite a bit from a defense that led the conference in takeaways.

Time to hire a competent OC. One of Allen’s OC’s was a stud, the other two were total duds.

The 5 minute scoring drought definitely concerns me because it’s the exact problem we had last year. Too often we look like TJD and 4 guys. I’’m hopeful but also concerned. -
Before I begin, yes, I’m aware that Allen is here for years to come because our lovely administration gave him a king’s ransom. Maybe this will be a jinx thread like my Fire Tom Allen thread. Allen has been the head coach for five full seasons now. He inherited a program in pretty good shape (for IU), going to back to back bowl games before he took over. His fifth season is now over, and we are the worst team in the Big Ten. We like to blame our division, but we were blown out by Rutgers, Purdue, and Minnesota this year. We returned the vast majority of last year’s starters and had the worst season in a decade. Winless in the conference, and winless against the P5. After five years, Allen is 26-32, and 15-28 in the conference. We’ve missed a bowl game three out of five years. Some give the covid year more credit than others. However much you give it, we were 6-1 in the conference that year, 9-27 in the conference during the four normal seasons. For all the talk about his recruiting, our 2021 class was 12th in the conference, and the 2020 class was too. We’ll see how many 2022 guys stick with IU. We have so many things to fix next season. Give Allen next year to fix them. If we have another year like this year, well…

You’re using UC’s bowl game from last year while at the same time arguing that ND’s past seasons aren’t relevant. Do you not see the irony there? And I’m not talking about ND’s playoff aspirations, I’m talking about them being UC’s best win. Notre Dame is another team that plays a weak schedule. It’s the same story every year with them. If UC was in the Big 10 East they’d have to play OSU, PSU, Michigan, and MSU. We literally played UC and they were less than impressive. OSU could’ve scored 100 on us. I think they’re a top 20 school, not a top 4 school.
-
Not really sure what to do with these two contradictory statements. In any event, you either think UC is one of the four best teams in the country or you don’t. I don’t, so I don’t want to see them in the playoff.
-
UC’s best win was against Notre Dame, a team that regularly gets blown out whenever they play top competition. Do you think UC is undefeated if they play Ohio State’s schedule this year? Because I’d bet that OSU would beat UC by 4+ touchdowns.
-
19% of D1 mens basketball teams make the tournament. 3% of FBS teams make the football playoff. I don’t want one of the four spots wasted on a team from a crap conference. If you want to start putting those teams in the playoff then expand the playoff.
-
That’s what happens when you hire a high school football coach and an NBA basketball coach..
-
They’re just asking the Purdue guys if they #LEO
-
I love Gus Johnson. Great game. Be a shame if Cincinnati makes the playoff. Would rather see a rematch of these two teams.
-
Did McCulley get hurt? Or did Allen burn his redshirt to start a walk on in the bucket game?
-
Yeah, I don’t get it either. Like usually that’s something someone says when the person is this big and scary guy. Tom Allen isn’t this big and scary dude. There’s no reason to be ‘scared’ to say it to him. It would just be rude and unnecessary to say to his face. Allen knows this team sucks. He’s on the sidelines while they’re getting the **** kicked out of them every weekend.
-
I think they banned it at some point between 2015 and 2021 actually.
-
Same. If a team goes undefeated I want it to be a team that plays a legit schedule and has to go to hostile environments in conference play. Their conference is a joke, and they only play hard non-conference games at neutral sites. They’re probably tied with Purdue as the last team I’d want to go undefeated.
-
Good to see Gonzaga go down early in the season.
-
A playoff featuring both Cincinnati and ND would be absolutely dreadful. Neither team is close to top 4 in the country.

2021/2022 Men’s Basketball Season

You said “Bates is a 40 plus 3-point shooter” and then cited his high school stats. Bates isn’t in high school anymore. The line is farther back, the game is faster, and the opponents are more athletic. Until he does it in college, it’s speculation that he’s a 40+ percent 3 point shooter at this level and especially during this season. Right now he’s a 33% three point shooter. I’m not even arguing that he isn’t a good 3 point shooter. We’ve only played 5 games and he hasn’t taken all that many threes. But we can’t just assume he’s going to shoot 40% from 3 as a freshman and fix our three point shooting woes. -

But right now that’s just speculation. I certainly hope that Bates is a 40% shooter from 3 this year, but so far he hasn’t been. As a team we’ve been a pretty poor shooting team. We’re shooting worse from the line than last year and a little better from 3. Even with a great defense it’s going to be tough to be the kind of team we want to be if we keep shooting 34% from 3 and 65.7% from the free throw line as a team. -
54 points in one game? Miss it. We’ve scored 52 points total in seven of our conference games, 87 points total in the conference including the Maryland game.

2021/2022 Men’s Basketball Season
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Hoosierfan2017's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
The defense has been great, but we’ve also faced some weak competition. St. John’s is the only quality opponent we’ve played and they scored 74 points. I’m looking forward to seeing how it holds up as our schedule gets tougher. I don’t know how good of a shooter Leal is due to the limited sample size we have this year. All I’m saying is that if he’s capable of, for example, shooting 40% from 3 on good volume then you have to find minutes for him. You can’t have one of your best shooters riding the bench when your team struggles shooting the ball.
