2022-2023 IUBB Roster Projection
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Five Prime's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Leal’s really no better of a shooter than Dennis, and he doesn’t play defense. It’s great that Leal loves IU but that can’t be the reason you keep a guy. We already have a cheerleading squad. -
I’d be fine losing Duncomb and Leal. Galloway too honestly if an upgrade is there. Never really wanted Gunn but he’ll be here for next year at the minimum, though I wouldn’t mind if we landed someone in his place either.

(2022) PF Malik Reneau to INDIANA
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Great news! Exactly the level of recruit I want us going after and landing. -
Kopp shot 36% from 3 and 85% from the line over three years at Northwestern. Last year with us he shot 36.1% from 3 and 86.5% from the line. We got basically exactly what we should’ve expected from him.
-
But we’re only going back and forth on the issue of their shooting. The poster said he didn’t know why one guy is considered a shooter but the other one isn’t. I didn’t opine that Davis is the better player or that he would be better here. Just that he’s clearly the better shooter. Who knows what his percentages would be at a P5 school. It’s a step up in competition, but he’d also be playing with better teammates and wouldn’t get as much defensive focus. Zeisloft shot 6% better from three at IU than he did at Illinois State.
-
He’s clinging to the 34% vs. 36% because it makes his argument sound a lot better than it really is. It lets him say “oh that’s only a two percent difference! They're not that different as shooters!" The reality is one guy is a career 34% from 3 but has shot under 34% in three of his four college seasons. The other guy is a career 36% from 3 but has shot above 36% in three of his four career seasons. Davis had one down year where he shot 32%. He's been above 37% the other three years on 10+ shots per season. Dennis had one good year, his freshman year, where he shot 40%. It looks like an outlier that he hasn’t been able to replicate since. The past two seasons, Davis has shot 521 3s at a 37.6% clip. That’s an outstanding percentage for that volume. Damian Lillard is a career 37% 3 point shooter. Using his logic, Dame isn’t a “shooter” and is barely better than Dexter Dennis from 3.
-
Armaan was never a flamethrower. He’s just the only player we’ve had since firing Crean who has shot better from 3 individually than the 2016 did as a team. Crean’s teams were never great defensively, but the 2016 team only gave up 0.7 ppg more than last years team during conference play while scoring 11 more ppg. Doubling down on the defensive focus isn’t going to take us to the next level. You need to be great on both ends.
-
Looking at JBJ’s college stats rn.. Oh how I miss having that kind of shooting in the cream and crimson. It’s been so long. Our 2016 conference championship team shot 41.5% from 3. In the 5 seasons since we fired Crean, we’ve had a whopping 1 player in 1 season shoot over 41.5% from 3. Armaan Franklin in 2020. With 1300 kids in the portal (or whatever the number is now) surely there’s a flamethrower or two available.
-
Hell idk, but if we’re going for one dimensional players I’d rather add a great shooter/bad defender than vice versa. Defense is much more reliant on all 5 players on the court than offense is. You can hide a bad defender. Our defense was great last year despite starting two negative defenders. A guy who can rain down threes would be much more helpful to this team.
-
Trae Young can’t stay in front of a parked car but he just sent the Cavs home for the season because they had no answer for his offense. When your offense is good enough it outweighs your liability as a defender. I’ll always be a firm believer that great individual offense is much more important than great individual defense in basketball.
-
Ugh. Ive already explained this to you multiple times. If you can’t figure out why the guy who shoots better on more than twice the volume from both the free throw line and from 3 is labeled a shooter and the other guy isn’t then I can’t help you. I’m not going to keep clogging up the thread.
-
It doesn’t make sense to you because you aren’t trying to understand it. Dennis is a career 34.4% shooter from 3. He’s shot under that 3 of his 4 seasons in college. The last time he shot higher than 33.6% from 3 in a season Juwan Morgan was on our team. His 3 pt shot has gotten worse every year he’s been in college, to the point that he shot 29.7% from 3 last season. If you don’t know why people see a guy shooting 29.7% from 3 on 4.4 attempts differently than they do a guy shooting 37.9% from 3 on 10.3 attempts, I don’t know what to tell you.
-
Davis made 3.9 threes per game last year. IU made 5.9 threes per game last year. If you don’t understand the significance of volume then idk what to tell you… Shooting 38% on 10 attempts per game is much harder than shooting 38% on 4 attempts per game. Good shooters are able to maintain good percentages when they increase their volume. I don’t even know why this became a comparison between the two. Dennis has good qualities. Shooting isn’t one of them. Antonio Davis is a good shooter and the numbers reflect that. His freshman year he broke Steph Curry’s record for 3s in a season by a freshman. If Dennis had Davis’s shooting ability he’d probably be heading to the league.
-
What? Dennis shot 30% on 4.4 3pt attempts per game last year and shot 78.7% from the line. That’s not close to Davis's percentages. And if you look at Davis's career numbers, he had one season where he shot 32% from 3 - his sophomore season. His other 3 seasons he’s been 38% (on 11.6 attempts); 37% (on 10.1 attempts); and 38% (on 10.3 attempts). He was 5th in the country in 3pt makes last year. You’re not shooting 38% from 3 on 10+ attempts if you aren’t a good shooter. And show me where all the people saying 38% isn’t a good 3 pt percentage are. If Dennis shot 38% from 3 I’d be all aboard the hype train. That’d be fantastic.
-
He shot 38% on 10.3 attempts per game last season. And he shot 88% from the line. I won’t pretend to be a Horizon league expert or act like I know what that level of competition is, but I don’t think there are many players in college basketball who could replicate those percentages on that volume.
-
If he did it isn’t really reflected in the stat sheet... His field goal attempts and 3pt attempts were his lowest since his freshman year despite averaging a career high in minutes per game. From reading that article, it sounds like he’s not a good shooter at the rim either. That concerns me probably even more than his 3 pt percentage. He has a low assist rate, so he’s not creating offense for others to make up for his poor shooting. He just really isn’t a player that interests me given our team composition and strengths/weaknesses. But maybe it’s the best we can get in the portal. Who knows.
-
If JG can be a wing next year that’d great for us. He has the measurements you want to see in your 3. He just needs to put in the work to get the matching skills.
-
We already had a great defense last year and it landed us 9th in the conference because too often we lacked the offensive firepower to capitalize on the defense and put teams away. We’ll rarely get blown out because of our defense, but too many games were close last year because we couldn’t score the basketball. The PSU and Wisconsin games were examples if that. Only 17 points in the second half because we lacked bucket getters. Guys you can count on to score the ball when you’re in a drought. We need bucket getters on the wings, especially if Trayce leaves. That’s what I want the staff targeting. Maybe Tamar Bates will be one next year.
-
That doesn’t really make me feel any better.. If he took 42 ‘closely guarded’ threes last year, that’s 35% of all the threes he took. So over a third of the 3s on the year he took on a shot he shoots 14% on. Makes me question his shot selection. The guy isn’t a good shooter. Whether folks think his other attributes make up for his lack of shooting is one thing, but there’s no way to spin him as anything other than a very meh 3 pt shooter.
-
Xavier, sure.. I’m assuming when you say “when we started playing well against top-tier competition” you mean beginning with the conference tournament, because we finished the regular season on a 2-7 skid. In our 5 postseason games Thompson shot 5 threes and made 2 of them. That’s not nearly a big enough sample to say he was one of our two best three point shooters. In the 14 games we played in February and March Race Thompson shot 32% from 3. Stewart shot 29% from 3 during that period, so not much difference, especially when you account for the difference in volume. Race only averaged 1.6 attempts per game over the last two months of the season.
-
Sadly his 36.3% from 3 during conference play was still the best on our team and he made 25.2% of our conference 3s.
-
Lmao. Why is this always your response whenever anyone questions the staff? We were 13th in the conference in 3pt percentage and dead last in 3pt makes. We lost our best 3pt shooter. Parker Stewart made 26% of our threes last year. What’s the coaching staff doing to replace that loss?
-
He has hit 5 or more 3s in a game 5 times. He’s played 112 college games. That’s 4.4% of his games. He made zero 3s in a game 26 times. He’s over 5x more likely to make 0 threes than he is 5+ threes. He has 21 games in his career where he hit 3 or more 3s. That’s 18.8% of his games. Only 3 of them were last year, and only 3 of them were the year before. So, 6 games over the last two seasons where he made 3+ threes. Not really what I’d call “plenty.”
-
Career 36.8% from the field and 34.4% from 3. Shot 35.3% from the field and 29.7% from 3 last season. :| Beating a dead horse but we need shooters. This guy.. not a shooter. We also really need a scoring wing. This guy isn’t that either. Really hoping Trayce comes back because it’s not looking optimistic otherwise.

IUBB Players in the Portal/Draft Exploratory Status
Hoosierfan2017 replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Next year is looking bleak if Trayce decides to leave.. Ugh.
