I am not specifically look at next year, but several years out -- a long term Program perspective. Team to team it will be what it is. But longer term, where are we going. Just say all the starters come back (best case scenario) -- Ware, Malik, MM, Gallo and Cupps. We are still loosing Walker, X, and Leal (thinking he's ready to start his biz career) to graduation. Plus the open scholarship. Then if CJ and/or Banks transfer. We are looking 4-6 open spots with only 1 signed at this point. Just think if we had a solid class of 4 freshmen coming in to build the future off of. Add a guard or 2 from the portal for next season and then we are cooking.

So show me where it has been done successfully in all of sports. It’s basically free agency — so look at the pros. Sure someone comes along and builds a “dream team” thru free agency. They see success for a few years but it eventually blows up. And at some point the NCAA will move to a contract model. Meaning these kids and schools will commit to each other for a period of time. No business can survive with the chaos the unlimited portal provides.

They don’t. The lost a bunch of players for some reason and where forced to pick up guys in the portal. You can always point to a team here and a team there that turns it’s roster over and sees success (you’re citing two of the ten). But I guess we’ll see if here is a team that is successful doing it consistently.

Right. The whole “X punched someone in the nuts” nonsense is old. First he got tangled with the guy and got a little aggressive down there. Ended up ejected which was BS, but is what it is. Bad time for that to happen. It’s not the crime of the century, so give it a rest. He needs to get back to plying form and start making a positive difference. -
Tenn is a good example though. They had a foundation. Brought in a guy to get them over the hump.
-
The teams with 5 or more lost a chit ton as well. But it’s not deceiving at all. Three teams are skewing your average. The median is 2.
-
You can always cite the one off -- "look they did it." But look at the current top 10 ranked teams: Uconn -- 1 transfer in Purdont - 1 transfer in Kansas - 5 in UNC - 5 in Houston - 2 in Tenn -- 2 in Duke - 1 in Kensucky - 1 in Baylor - 2 in Memphis - winner winner, chicken dinner with 9 in. 7 of 10 of the top teams have 2 or less transfers in. That's plugging holes. Life is so much easier if you have your guys and you're not turning the roster over every year.

Right. No problem. The portal builds teams. HS recruiting builds programs.
-
One player. Queen “deciding” between a crap Maryland program and us? I bet Purdue is shaking in their boots. If we are going to actually build a program, not a team, we should have classes stacked up.
-
We have zero bricks coming in to build a foundation. We should have a class of at least 3-4 quality, foundational, players.
-
At this point our recruiting is in the crapper. We should have a stable of solid HS lined up for next year and the year after. We got one. If you’re going to rely on mercenary transfers you’re going to have some wild rides.

Nothing like wearing the pants in the family. But reality is, if it ever is an option, it will need to be after the kids high school. No way would they want to start as a new freshman. Middle school to high school friends are important to kids.

I keep telling you guys Stevens no longer coaches. And that Donavan guy people like to talk about, well he’s killing it with the Bulls. Not.
-
That assumes he’s actively looking. The family life of a coach generally sucks as you basically change jobs every few years as you work your way up. Who knows.

The only "ranking" that matters is draft day. :) -

ESPN "rankings" has Edey at 14 and Ware at 22, if that means anything. :) -
While obviously true, it's silly and not competitive sports. So I guarantee you a starting spot and you come in a lay a turd. Am I supposed to keep doing it, or sit your sorry a$$ on the bench. Or do I just lie to you. :)

I actually see all of them coming back. I think Ware's draft prospects will drop as we work thru the Big10 and he's getting bounced around a bit -- he needs more a$$. But you still have several spots to fill -- X, Leal and Walker graduate, plus an open, plus if Gunn/Banks transfer, less one signee = 4-5 spots to fill. As for the portal, it's a philosophical thing. If history is any guide (using pro sports), you build from the draft and add via free agency. Sure you can spend a lot of money for a few years, maybe win a championship, but then it blows up and you have to start over. It's not viable for long term success, IMO. Even the great Coach Cig said so. :) -

It's what happens when you don't have a base of incoming HS players. We should have that base at this point, but we don't. Not even freaking close. It's a program killer that needs to be fixed immediately. -
Couldn't hurt at this point. :)
