  1. Not indicting the transfer portal. Just pointing out it’s not that easy.
  2. I’ll just remind all you “get one from the portal” warriors — X is from the portal. :)
  3. I can accept that. They could use a lot of work on that. So no reason to take a less than ideal shot early in the clock.
  4. Someone better check his pulse. Haven’t seen him move in a while.
  5. Moneyball rule -- if we have guys who can shoot, why don't they shoot good? I would rather have good high-percentage shots than volume. An open 3 with 20 seconds on the clock for Jordan Hulls is high percentage. For our current guys, it's basically a turnover. Offense should work to get that high-percentage shot, which is different for each player. Our offense doesn't do that. The ball sticks. Movement stops. Defenses just have to stand there and defend.
  6. Why would you encourage guys who can't shoot to take quick shots? It's about taking good shots, not just any shot. Unless we have a break, we should come down on offense, move the ball, and work the clock, until we get a good shot. Not some of the crazy crap we do now. We don't really do any of that. No reason you can't dump it into the post, then push it back out, and reset back to the post, work it around, etc. Our post guys get it, and think they have to take a shot, usually double/triple teamed.
  7. He freaking worked his a$$ off between soph and Jr. year. Became a beast. A lot of it is basketball IQ. If I'm less than 30% from three, there is little value in taking a shot with more than 15 seconds on the clock. Get down to under 7, then shoot away. If I'm closer to 40%, then bombs away whenever I touch the ball.
  8. Fair enough. But if you want to play, that's a role for you. Work on it, figure it out.
  9. Often time a good shot is determined by the talent of the shooter. We have seen guys that can't miss, defended, blind folded, from the balcony. Then there are those that airball free throws. :) Play within yourself would go a long way.
  10. Ok, but at this point what has he got to lose, playing time? Get in, put up a quick 12, and dare the coach to take you out.
  11. Yes, Leal needed to be that knock down shooter. You know that kid that comes in and rips the other teams heart out because he can't miss -- how many times have we seen that kid play against us.
  12. Exceptional performers are always evaluating and improving. They make the moves necessary to win -- whether at basketball or life. But those types are few and far between -- maybe 10% of the population, 20% if we are lucky. Mr. Ego gets in the way and prevents people from seeing the issues right in front of them. That's how we get an NBA guy with 40+ years of playing/coaching experience make the same silly substitutions game after game, year after year, with mixed results and then snap at the media when questioned. I have no reason to believe that the posters on this board are any different than the general population and thus only 10-20% would be exceptional. The 90% here who would coach maybe won't do the substitutions, but hand their hat on something else that doesn't work.
  13. In my mind a stupid shot is equal to a turnover. Especially with this team that can't rebound.
  14. I don't think the misses are why CJ is taken out. If it is, he certainly doesn't show it cause he still shoots like a wild man. It's more the fact that he takes stupid shots.
  15. Oh please. Sure the kid can be a tool, but these aren't the crimes of the century. If he's not playing basketball, nobody gives a crap. Sure he hurt the team. Consequences for bad behavior, fine no problem -- run the stairs, sit out a half or a game, apologize, whatever. But kicking off the team, give me a break.
  16. Seems backward. Need to open the funnel. Start with six and narrow down to three, etc. To me the biggest issue is the lack of building up the recruiting. As Horsby stated, building from the portal isn't a good long term strategy. Great for fill in guys. But you need a core of 4 year players coming out of high school.
  17. One of the reasons you need high quality assistants. They can do a lot of the day to day grunt work. Not sure Woodson has that kind of staff. Didn’t Knight spend a lot of time fishing and hunting?
  18. True, but the program is bigger and more complex than just a coach. Support (or lack thereof) of the powers that be can go a long way towards success and failure. Hopefully, Dolson had the conversation during the hiring about Woody retiring "on top" or something. Whether this year or next, I for one would like to see a smooth coach to coach transition.
  19. That is the ultimate characteristic of long term successful coaches. very few and far between.
  20. Maybe so. But the money thing has to stop at the gym door. Once on the floor is has to be about the team, period. So I don't care how much NIL you have, if you suck tonight, you're butt is on the bench.
  21. It's all done on an online portal. But yes, as of a few years ago, they do send formal letters after the fact along with swag and stuff.
  22. Hate to bring it up, and not sure the kid is any messiah, but this may go back to the Dane Fife issues.
  23. How about Fred Hoiberg. I know his record since Iowa state ain’t the greatest, but he just beat Purdue with a bunch of kids who worked at McDonalds and a Japanese shooter. Smacked us too.
