Hopefully this young group of talented players, on both sides of ball, will grow and develop together as a group.  Also with the type of guys Allen is bringing in, the development part of it will be accelerated. Penix is a kid you can use as  a recruiting tool. Not saying Allen is answer, but watching IU football for 40 yrs., I have never seen this type of talent, and linemen that look like they physically belong out there, I'm willing to give him a couple more years. Maybe we let him make mistakes along the way, and see where we after Penix's junior year. People laugh about his enthusiasm,  but these kids thoroughly enjoy playing for him. Maybe Glaas will be the one at the end holding up his middle finger. What do we have to lose?

Rick Mount told me he has helped  turned many young players into better shooters. Give them the proper tools,  and then it's all just repetition. It's up to the player to commit to putting in the reps.

Coaching is my biggest concern as well. Coordinators are so important,  as you were saying. Allen gave up his playcalling,  so get the best DC we can, and put in his own scheme , then see where are. Adding talented depth is the next phase of building at least a quality program. Wasn't a lot separating talent on the field yesterday,  just lack of depth wears a team down .

Agree. I thought we take a few shots after drawing the defense up, but not as much as . we did late. Loved the blocking by our receivers and backs.  . Also liked getting SS in open space more,  as opposed to just between the tackles.

It usually is after a visit. Geronimo was the same way except for his “what’s a Hoosier?” tweet and then he announced his commitment Sunday night.

I truly wonder what happens if we earn a bowl bid this season. I hate the fact that we missed going bowling the last two seasons by losing to purdoodoo. However, 5-6 in consecutive seasons to have a shot at a bowl is solid at IU. We just need to get over that hump. (Playing bad teams helps that cause too)

I get being pissed at some bad play calls and going conservative but I thought there were some good adjustments made yesterday too. I don’t see too many people talking about them on here though. That seems to lend credence to the itch to just *****.

Why do people have to jump on a side and defend it like they’re life depends on it? Is your pride hurt that much that you can’t admit when you’re wrong? Goodness people.

Tom Allen will never be confused with Nick Saban just the same as IU isn’t and won’t be in Alabama’s stratosphere. If we can consistently compete with that middle tier in the conference while winning a few I’ll be an extremely happy fan. If we can get to a bowl game every few years I’d be stupid happy. Those things are asking a lot for an historically bad football program.

I’m not saying we can’t elevate the program in the future but let’s keep it in context here.

I definitely think we are on the rise compared to what we are accustomed to seeing over the years. My biggest concern is his feel for critical situations. Yesterday there were 3 of them that all went against us. Two involved running 3 straight times in the mouth of their defense when we had momentum moving the ball on previous possessions. The last was clock management at the end.

I thought we did a great job offensively the first 3 quarters protecting our defense. Two minutes into the 4th the announcers made the comment of ball control and we had 30 min to MSU 17 min. Then we got very assertive offensively. I agree on the depth, and we had a few contributors defensively out. But I feel we lost the game when we went assertive and lost all momentum we had built up over the third by exposing our defense. Every time we did that they scored. End of the first half. Three straight runs in the start of the fourth. At the end of the game we had no time management. Every play was down the field. It was just an odd frenetically paced both fast and slow game at different points. If we stick to what we are doing the whole game I think we win.

Good points but who is our defensive coordinator? I am legit worried on that side of the ball. Allen had a handle on it when he was a DC but its a complete different ballgame when you are the HC. Saw Allen chewing someone out a few times when the defense was out there. I assume it was d-coordinator. We paid up for an offensive coordinator and now have a QB who is talented enough to win us games with his arm and legs. If we decide Allen is the answer Glass may need to pay up on that side of the ball as well. Our secondary is young but too talented to be giving up the chunk plays to a less than stellar MSU QB.
I agree Allen has brought in some talented players. Wilson always brought them in on offense but Allen is bringing them in on both sides of the ball. I'm optimistic because what plagued us the last 3 or 4 years with Debourd and having no QB appears to be behind us. It's at least an exciting offense again but I sure hope we do not waste this talented QB's years by not getting better defensively. Talent can elevate it but I am a bit worried about the coaching side...

    My opinion?
This is a football program on the rise, especially with a high level quarterback firmly established for the next three + years.
    Stay the course, of course.

It's taking what the defense gives you. In order to throw the ball downfield, and open up the run game, you have to throw 'east/west" passes. That was a top 5 defense that we scored 31 points on. Offense was not the problem. And hopefully by now you can see the difference in the two quarterbacks.

It gets old finding joy in close losses but....
We fell apart at the end of the game.  On the other hand, however, five minutes into the game it looked like we might lose 45-3 as we appeared totally overmatched on both sides of the ball. Quite a turnaround for the next three or so quarters.
Also,  a thumbs up to a couple of true freshman. Mullen on D and Bedford on the OL. Not an easy task for Bedford to get his first start against the MSU D at MSU.

I agree with your sentiments, and am excited about Penix (have to be careful with spellcheck), but in regards to a guy with “it” factor I have three words....

I know people say we've been here before, and I agree we have, but the wild card here is Penix. We've been in this situation before but I don't think we've ever had a guy with the "it" factor Penix has, best individual player we've had since the Coleman/Howard/Sudfeld days and he's a freshman. We've been here before, but Penix has the ability to make this team special.

I thought the defense had a couple of decent series in the third. I believe they held Lewerki to less than 100 yards passing in the second half (he might have had 100 rushing by himself in the second though).

If we could consistently compete like this with the middle of the conference (MSU, Nebraska, Northwestern, Iowa) while winning one every other year I’d be happy. It’s the complete no shows and hardly ever winning one that gets to me.

Wow, OSU 38-0 in the first half AT Nebraska. We might have bragging rights by only losing 51-10 :)
