EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana women's soccer team (11-4-1, 4-4 Big Ten) got a goal in the 99th minute from freshman Veronica Ellis to defeat the Michigan State Spartans (8-6, 2-6 Big Ten) at DeMartin Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The 11 wins are the most for the Hoosiers since posting 13 wins in 2007.

The goal for Ellis is her second of the season, and it's her second game-winning goal of the season with the other coming in the Big Ten opener against Minnesota.

"It truly took an entire team effort today," Indiana head coach Amy Berbarysaid. "We played a tough game on Friday and this was your typical Sunday game in conference play where you have to grind it out and find a way and we did. We were able to get the next goal after they tied it and then got the one that mattered in overtime."

The Hoosiers finished with a 16-11 edge in overall shots and 10-5 in shots on goal. Indiana also drew 10 corner kicks to eight for the Spartans.

Indiana opened the scoring in the game in the 36th minute when Lisa Nouanesengsy took a long pass down the right side from Tori Keller and broke into the right side of the box. After taking a touch to elude the MSU defender, she blasted a shot that curled inside the back post out of the reach of the keeper and the Hoosiers took a 1-0 lead.

The goal for Nouanesengsy was her 9th of the year and 22nd of her career. Her nine goals this season are tied for fifth-most in a single-season in school history. It is also the most in a season since Kristin Arnold's 10 goals in 2007. For Keller, it was her second assist on the year.

But the Spartans scored just 10 seconds after that to tie the game at 1-1.

To start the second half, Indiana was once again on the attack from the start. This time Jordan Woolumsfound herself with the ball along the end line on the right side of the goal and sent a cross in front of the goal that rolled right across the goal mouth and Kayleigh Steigerwalt was there to tap it into the goal uncontested, putting the Hoosiers back on top, 2-1.

The assist was the second of the year for Woolums and the goal for Steigerwalt was the fifth of her season, the second-most on the team.

The Hoosiers were able to hold the lead for nearly 35 minutes but in the 83rd minute MSU found the back of the goal to tie the game at 2-2, so the game went to overtime.

In the first overtime session, with time winding down, Ellis and Rebecca Candler both ran onto a ball in the box. Candler eventually took possession along the right side of the box and found Ellis all alone in front of the goal. Ellis took one touch and then flicked a shot past the MSU keeper on the near side to give Indiana the win. For Candler, it is her team-leading seventh assist of the year and the 18th of her career.

"Veronica has really turned it on for us," Berbary said of Ellis. "For her to have the composure in the box like she did is something that we can't teach. She stayed calm, took a touch and buried it like she is a senior."

The four Big Ten wins for the Hoosiers match the team's total from last year with three games remaining. Indiana also improves to 2-0-1 in overtime this season.

Next up on the schedule is a road game against in-state rival Purdue on Thursday starting at 7 p.m.
