Well, Jeff, Hubert wants to continue as head coach, which indicates he actually did want this job. That... and he took the job.

100% Yes. This is one of my pet peeves. We signed our current Adidas pre-football getting good. Now everything has changed. I really want to see an announcement of a new deal given the exposure IU now provides. More money and more priority in FB and MBB. I see some other schools getting flashy Adidas deals and that should be us gosh darn it. We are the champs of CFB dag nabbit.

I’m still waiting for NIL and the portal to “destroy” college sports as so many people claim it will…

This post was in another thread, but just responding in this topic. This is the narrative we've got to hope is right. If it's not... we are in trouble. It seems to me this basically all comes down to getting the portal right, which will end up fixing all our other issues. Personally, I think doing that will go a long way, but I'm kinda worried there are some other head coach skill deficiencies present. Some of the player dev and team evolution stuff this past season was worrying, and I'm not sure that can be attributed to screwing up the portal. TBD. CDD has a pretty good coaching record, though this is a new level for him... But, nothing else to do now but hope and be optimistic. Fingers crossed.

They ponied up $38M over five years to get rid of Stoops. Stein got a bit of a war chest to start. They’re trying on football. Tbd if it works… MBB I still don’t totally understand. $22M is such an outlier, it doesn’t really make sense adding up their players. They seem to be inflating by several million somehow. I mean that’s what our ‘25 football roster cost. Regardless, I like we’re they’re at with Pope at the helm.

Odds/Thoughts on building top 25 preseason
Pagoda replied to WayneFleekHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
5%. Part of preseason rankings is being top of mind with voters and getting the benefit of the doubt. We aren’t top of mind and this past season didn’t give us a benefit of the doubt. I doubt we make such a big portal splash we get voters attention so much that we get ranked. This doesn’t mean we can find a good team in the portal that goes on to have a good season. It’s more the dynamics of preseason polls. I just hope our class looks good to us, or at least we don’t have as many people worried like last year. -
For sure. I fear Miami is the exact sort of team Purdue shreds up. Hoping to be surprised though…

He would have taken IU over UM in 2024. My source is great. Oh you can walk away. I don’t know why you don’t. - Our fanbase is toxic and bad, which the primary thing holding back the program - Our fanbase will not change - Therefore IUBB is permanently done I’m just following your logic. It’s time to move on. It’s hard to be a fan of a program and hate the fans of the program. You’ve got cut ties with all these bad people asap!

He wasn’t going to leave Michigan after a year and restart. That’s a very important detail. I know from a great source he would have taken the IU job in 2024. Nothing ugly happens in Bloomington. This isn’t South American soccer. You know, if IU fans are as bad as you say, I don’t know why you don’t cut ties with IU sports. Why associate with such terrible toxic people?

Yea their TV deal isn't big -- like $3-4M though that's going up quite a bit (maybe double?) with the new Pac-12. Their athletic dept still brings in ~$40M in revenue apparently. Not a lot of details since they're private, but ya know ticket sales, sponsors, maybe some university subsidies given how surprisingly big that number is... not sure. They can probably find a way to funnel $5-6M rev share to hoops to add to the $2M of NIL. But nowadays that's putting them on the edge of the top-25 on roster spend I'd guess. Should have come to IU, Mark! Though if he did we would have had to make sure he didn't get access to Woody's Fellas Lounge.

Keep in mind Gonzaga gets to direct more or less all the rev share they have into bball. I'd guess that gets their total roster budget into the $7-8M+ range, but I'm just guessing. They're still at a financial disadvantage, just not something crazy. I don't have anything against Mark, except that he has seemingly flirted with every big job opening for like 10 years and it's gotten a little old. He probably could have had the IU job last year and got an upgrade in resources. But, he's too big of a wuss to leave the Spokane area. Coward! Come to IU and miss the tournament like a man! ;-)

This will be a very interesting coach search. UNC is probably the best job in CBB or #2 at worst. Can they snag a top P5 coach? Should be a lot of drama…

Fair? Rules? In college sports? Players are allowed to be in all the commercials and movies they can get roles in. Though national ad campaigns seem to be only for the top few players in CBB and CFB. Like Arch Manning or Caitlin Clark or Cam. Even pre-NIL, big programs had the advantage of providing more exposure to a player which ultimately leads to opportunities. And in the NIL world it's amplified. Players have more money making opportunities at a big place like Texas than at Iowa St. Is what it is. Not to get in the weeds, but if you're interested, the way NIL turns into pay for play is the school's media partner promises/guarantees a certain amount of NIL "opportunities" for the player while they're at the school. These opportunities are mostly nonsense and not actually worth it from a marketing point of view, but this approach with the media partner works within the NIL "rules." So, for example, a Blue Chip player's deal will be something like $1M of rev share with the school and $3M of guaranteed NIL ops from the school's media partner, and that's how they make $4M per year. Kinda silly but that's the system right now.
