They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
go iu bb replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yes, IU never offered. It was thought that if they did offer, he would commit on the spot or close to it. Similar to what you just said happened with Purdue offering. Some people were pretty high on him, a lot of others had doubts and wanted higher rated players. One of those that wanted higher rated players was Woodson. Big miss by him but to be fair, Smith likely wouldn't have prospered in Woodson's system like he has at PU. The same could be said about Miller's system. -

It seems to be that, in general, the better they are as a player, the worse they are as a coach. The exceptions to this seem to be those who weren't really athletically gifted but had to work extremely hard and really understand the game to become good. Even then they don't always do well. My guess is that those who it comes to more naturally might not have as deep of an understanding and/or don't know how to relay their understanding to those less gifted. Those that had to work hard expect that same dedication from others and fail when they don't get that. -

Do you mean former players coaching at their alma mater? Yeah, there's only a few of those and for the most part it hasn't worked out. Davis at UNC is another one in addition to those mentioned by others already. He's done much better than Woodson but some think he's on the hot seat while others think it's just warm and he'll for sure get another year. So he hasn't been terrible but he's also not great and likely won't last too much longer at UNC. If you mean coaches who were former players at any school, then that would be quite a few of the coaches out there. -

If true, that just shows how much Woodson "loves" IU basketball. He didn't even keep up with what was happening in the program. -
Nick Kidwell also decided not to try to get another year of eligibility. https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-football-roster-notes-as-program-turns-page-to-2025/ More articles about the roster: https://hoosierhuddle.com/hoosier-blog/latest-iu-football-roster-update-comes-with-some-surprises/2025/1/29 https://www.idsnews.com/article/2025/01/indiana-football-transfers-curt-cignetti-big-ten-iu-bloomington

Assembly Hall just isn't large enough to hold both of those inflated egos at the same time. -

This site wasn't loading for a few minutes. I was momentarily excited thinking I had missed the news that Woodson had been fired and all the traffic had crashed the site. Alas, that wasn't the case... -

It is true that if Woodson had played anywhere else then he would have been fired last year. It's also true that if Woodson had played anywhere else then he wouldn't have been hired in the first place. But yes, internal politics keeping a bad coach around too long simply because they played at the university were definitely part of the reason I didn't want any former players hired in the first place. Another reason is the coaching acumen of those former players. Then there is the baggage that the best of them (though still far from great himself) has. -

I would add that the revenue sharing is capped. The cap is $20.5M per school for this first year it will be offered. That amount is divided at the discretion of the school as to the amount each sport and athlete receives. Title IX also factors in to that but it's unclear exactly what that means. As for NIL, there is no way the NCAA could cap or otherwise hinder an athlete's ability to earn money from other sources at this point. You're absolutely right that they did it to themselves by being reactive instead of proactive and tried so hard to maintain the status quo of "amateur" athletes while raking in billions of dollars. As for the schools having any say in NIL matters, it does make sense when you consider that most of a coach's salary comes from basically that so it would be hypocritical of them to say they couldn't do that for the athletes as well. What is really needed are binding contracts. I don't see that happening until there is some sort of CBA which itself requires several steps before happening. Anyways, since we have a bad team despite spending around $6M in NIL, let's fire Mike Woodson and get a competent coach in here. -

It's confirmation bias. He's been blaming the fans for years so he'll believe anything that makes the fans look like the problem. -

At this point, does anyone care about IU basketball enough to send death threats? i could definitely see it 20 years ago but now.. I'm kind of skeptical. If he is getting death threats, that's unacceptable. It's just a game. -

If you found out you were about to get let go at work then let it be known that you were going to quit in a year do you think they'd still let you go as planned? -

Yes, but that was after the regular season. The transfer portal for football opens before the bowl games start so that could happen so that could happen even if the coach stays even though it's unlikely. -

Here's a question. I know if a coach leaves (for whatever reason) in the spring or summer after the transfer portal window is closed the players on that team get 30 days to enter the portal. Is that true if the coach leaves is fired or resigns during the season? If a coach is fired during the season, is there the possibility (however unlikely) that school might be unable to field a team because too many players hit the portal immediately? -
1998 when IU beat Temple on an AJ Guyton 3. I was at that game under the basket. It was intense.

Maybe he will but if he does how much pull do you think he would actually have to pull it off? I'm going with not a lot. What exactly do you think he would be able to do? -
I guess they really pack the students in tight. They make them stand at a 45° angle so they can get more in there. That means they're standing the whole game because they can't sit down, no room to do so. Could be that she locked her knees. Maybe she was drunk and/or sick. Maybe it was just too hot. An update says she's ok and walked out of the stadium.

Losing to IU must've really demoralized them.
