With Wade, it was very likely that he still had 1+ year left on his show cause. At the end of the day, whatever the reason, those schools decided they would rather hire a pair of coaches with 0 combined NCAAT wins instead of Beard or Wade.

Wade knowingly and intentionally broke the NCAA rules. When he got caught, he compounded the problem by lying. This last part is what earned him the show cause, just like Sampson. I wouldn't have a problem with it if IU were to hire him but I can totally understand why they won't.

It's not different. Seeing things as smokescreens is just a form of denial. It's basically saying "fake news!" any time the information doesn't align with their wishes. It lets people hold out the hope for their preferred candidate or that the candidate they don't want won't be it. There's probably plenty of inaccurate information going around, but I very much doubt that's intentional.

I'm thinking Woodson won't be the coach in the likely case that IU has to play in the Crown. It'll probably be one of the assistants as an interim.

I would give him a very unenthusiastic chance. To me, it would signal that IU is very okay with being mediocre so I would be even less invested in the team than I currently am. I'd probably just check scores after the fact and watch 1 or 2 games the first year. If I couldn't watch a game, I probably wouldn't bother to have live updates on my phone like I do now. Then if it looks like it was actually a good hire, I'd start to come back but it would be slow.
