Players are sometimes pushed into the portal, they don't always go in because of greed. I'd say any players who can't find a new team because no one thinks they're good enough would likely fall into that group.

Better than an open scholarship. -
I'm not sure I'd use the word "only" in that context. That's over 25%. Players from the B1G shouldn't have trouble finding new places to play but it looks like a quarter of them are. Some of them might just being selective and taking their time to decide but I doubt all of that 25% are. Some of them probably aren't getting traction from schools that they think they should be able to play for. This goes in line with the B1G not being very good last year.

IU is a decent school but I also wonder why someone smart enough to graduate college at 15 would go there over a more prestigious school. I'd think they'd both be able to get into other schools as well as have them paid for if they're that intelligent. Edit: and @Class of '66 Old Fart's link answers that.

Wow, Barr and Matheny are really team players and took lesser scholarships to bring in McDonald. https://swimswam.com/josh-matheny-and-luke-barr-of-indiana-enter-transfer-portal-but-have-no-intention-to-transfer/ I also missed this and see it only as a passing mention here: IU landed transfer Brian Benzing who finished 2nd in the 100 breast at the NCAAs. https://swimswam.com/indiana-returns-tomer-frankel-jassen-yep-and-gavin-wight-for-5th-years/ -
This might be more football but I imagine it would affect basketball as well. Looks like big changes will probably continue coming in college sports, though many of these have already been predicted. https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/sec-big-ten-developing-plan-to-share-revenue-with-players-in-potential-landmark-change-to-college-athletics/ https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/40053021/college-sports-leaders-deep-talks-settle-nil-antitrust-case-vs-ncaa

Maybe Woodson will have the team playing as well as (or better than) the sum of its parts for the 1st time since he's been here. Probably not.

The Basketball Tournament 2024 - Assembly Ball

The NBA players probably have something in their contracts that keep them from playing in things like this. -
That's why I'm still not very excited about next season despite having a lot more talent: I just didn't believe Woodson is a very good coach, I don't think he learned, and I think he's too stubborn to change the type of lineups he'll put on the floor and how the offense is run. I guess we'll see when the season starts but I won't be surprised if this team underperforms its talent level.

Miroslaw will represent Germany at the Olympics. I saw that he is the first IU to swim for them. It looks like he'll be swimming the 200m free and be on the 4x100 free and 4x200 free relays. Since they're only sending 1 swimmer in the 100m free, I'm guessing Miroslaw hasn't hit the Olympic qualifying time in that event. The only guy they're sending in that event broke Miroslaw's German record earlier this year. -
It figures that IU's bridge would be Galloping Gertie.
-
Yes. The rule is that they need to play in less than 1/3 of the team's games and the games played in must be in the 1st half of the season.

I think this is one that the NCAA can actually win. Typically when they've lost, it's been because they were trying to restrict students who happened to be athletes (which is and has been the NCAA's view for a long time) from having the same rights as students who aren't athletes. Basically, by not wanting to make athletes employees, the NCAA and the schools created this situation. However, I don't think another year of eligibility because of not playing falls into that category. I guess it would really depend on how the NCAA worded it when they gave players another year of eligibility.

That's a huge pick up. He scored 46 individual points at the NCAAs. He's also a backstroker/IMer which will help fill Burns' role on relays. Also, his 200 IM time would be a school record. -
They did and they did. They lost. That is why there are unlimited transfers with immediate eligibility. The NCAA's/schools' long time argument that the athletes are students first and definitely NOT employees in any fashion is really biting them in the @$$. When they then try to restrict the "student" athletes from doing things other students are allowed to do, they lose. It's that simple.

So you're saying even just matching the results from 2 years ago would be an underachievement. Got it. B1G championship, top 3 seed, and a S16 should be the expectation since this roster dwarfs the one that did that.

It also matters when the games are played. They must be in the first 1/2 of the year to receive another year. That's the factor here. He won't be granted medical redshirt. They really should change it to be like football. -
Yeah, he's been all over the place. IIRC, he moved around in HS a lot too. Get the "one foot out the door" vibe from him. I'm not upset that Miller missed on him.
-
Matt Cross is going to visit Iowa and Wisconsin so he may actually end up in the B1G. I remember how much Miller wanted him.

Doing the humpty hump? -
Someone calls out some of your BS stats and you shift. He shot 46.6% from the field last year, not 44%. In fact, he's only shot worse than 46% from the field one year, his freshman year. He actually shot worse than that from the line last year at 53.3%. You're right that he did shoot 9 shots per game, unfortunately 3 of those were 3 pointers which he did not hit. What changed between last year and the year before? TJD and his excellent passing out of the post went pro. That plus just trying to shoot more shots lead to his 3-point percentage dropping a ton. I have no problem with him shooting less 3s but that doesn't make him bad at finishing at the rim, like you tried to claim.

We've seen that lessons learned one season are forgotten by the time the next season comes around with this staff.

Expectations for the 24-25 Season
go iu bb replied to Unexpectedflash's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Debatable. Last year returned 7 players while this year is only 6. Both teams lost their best player. This year is returning more starters 3.5 (counting Cupps as 0.5 starter) vs 2 from the year before. Of course, those are starters from a bad team. -
Expectations for the 24-25 Season
go iu bb replied to Unexpectedflash's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Considering the talent + experience on the team it should be competing for the B1G championship, ranked, with a 4 seed or better, and getting to the S16. Then I look at the coaching staff and my actual expectation become some disappointing blowout loses, middle of the pack in the B1G, unranked at the end of the season, and missing or barely making the NCAAT. If they do make it, it will likely be an early loss. There will likely be a customary 3+ game losing streak or two in conference play. I expect we'll hear many of the same excuses as last year. -
